DESCRIPTION:Burt Freeman Bacharach | May 12\, 1928 – February 8\, 2023   \nAn American composer\, songwriter\, record producer\, and pianist who is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential figures of 20th-century popular music. Starting in the 1950s\, he composed hundreds of pop songs\, many in collaboration with lyricist Hal David. Bacharach’s music is characterized by unusual chord progressions\, influenced by his background in jazz harmony\, and uncommon selections of instruments for small orchestras. He arranged\, conducted\, and produced much of his recorded output. \nOver 1\,000 different artists have recorded Bacharach’s songs. From 1961 to 1972\, most of Bacharach and David’s hits were written specifically for and performed by Dionne Warwick\, but earlier associations from 1957 to 1963 saw the composing duo work with Marty Robbins\, Perry Como\, Gene McDaniels\, and Jerry Butler. Following the initial success of these collaborations\, Bacharach wrote hits for singers such as Gene Pitney\, Cilla Black\, Dusty Springfield\, Tom Jones\, and B. J. Thomas.

At 14\, he was accepted into the prestigious New Orleans Center for Creative Arts\, whose alumni include Wynton and Branford Marsalis\, Harry Connick\, Jr. and Nicholas Payton. There\, trained in music theory and multi-styles composition\, he graduated in 2000 with top honors. He has also tutored under clarinetist and educator Alvin Batiste. Like many budding young horn players form the Big Easy\, he put his time in playing with the local brass bands in a traditional process of initiation in the musical process. Devin Phillips has paid his dues performing\, touring and recording with top jazz artists such as Wynton Marsalis\, Eddie Palmieri\, The Headhunters\, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra\, musician Lenny Kravitz\, and Los Hombres Caliente\, with whom he recorded two award-winning albums.\n\nHis reputation as a sax man with intricate and rhythmically innovative sounds made him a popular feature at jazz festivals: France’s Jazz de Vien Festival; Tokyo’s JVC Jazz Festival; Itanbul’s The Ruins; Spain’s Barcelona Jazz Festival; the Netherlands’ North Sea Jazz and the New Orleans Jazz Festival. In 2005\, Phillips formed New Orleans Straight Ahead. But in August\, Hurricane Katrina muted the music. With all gone\, save his sax\, and his family scattered throughout the U.S.\, Phillips evacuated to Portland and reformed New Orleans Straight Ahead with other musician evacuees. Phillips and took advantage of a program created by the PDXJazz Festival in partnership with Azumano Travel\, which invited jazz musicians affected by the hurricane to come to Portland with their families\, either for temporary shelter or for good. The invitation included free transportation to Portland\, temporary housing\, and access to an active jazz network with performance and workshop opportunities.\n\nOver the course of six months\, more than 50 New Orleans musicians traveled to Oregon\, a dozen musicians\, including Phillips\, have decided to remain in Portland. Since arriving\, Phillips has performed at a number of local clubs and appreciated the opportunity to be part of the Portland Jazz Festival. After graduating\, Sands joined Inside Straight\, one of bassist Christian McBride’s bands. In 2014\, Sands cited as influences McBride\, Wynton Marsalis\, Kenny Garrett\, and Marcus Roberts\, because “They’re coming from the tradition of bringing people into the music\, but also moving it forward into new directions”. DESCRIPTION:Graduating from some of the nations most prestigious jazz programs\, Satterthwaite earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Texas in Jazz Piano Performance\, a Master of Arts in Commercial Music from Florida Atlantic University and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Miami. Satterthwaite is an Assistant Professor of Jazz Piano and African American Studies at the University of Georgia. He has studied with Stephen Scott\, Ron Miller\, Pat Coil\, Dave Meder\, Quincy Davis\, Brad Leali\, and Lynn Seaton. His educational experiences have impacted his teaching philosophy as he brings forth the knowledge\, observations\, and backgrounds of the educators\, artists and creative makers that he has interacted with and learned from over the years. As a scholarly contribution to the field\, Satterthwaite presented “Beyond Fourths and Pentatonics: A Critical Analysis of Selected Recordings of McCoy Tyner “1962 to 1963” at the national 2021 Jazz Education Network Conference. \nSatterthwaite arranged and composed all songs on his debut album “Who I Am\,” which can be heard on major music streaming platforms\, and is releasing his sophomore album Savannah Blue.

While in college\, Karla began singing with the St. Louis Jazz Quartet\, a group featuring highly regarded regional jazz vocalist Jeanne Trevor\, an early mentor. In the early 2000s\, she was lead vocalist in combos led by internationally acclaimed bassist Tom Kennedy\, whose credits include such greats as Rosemary Clooney\, Freddie Hubbard\, Mike Stern\, Lee Ritenour\, Ben Vereen\, Dave Weckl. \nIn Portland\, Karla began working with players such as Randy Porter (Diane Schuur\, Gino Vanelli)\, Bobby Torres (Joe Cocker\, Etta James\, Tom Jones)\, Steve Christofferson\, and more in that nurturing environment.  When asked\, she quickly describes her influences as Nancy Wilson\, Billie Holiday\, Aretha Franklin\, and the Fifth Dimension. \nBorn and raised in Atlanta\, Georgia\, Joe Alterman moved to New York in the fall of 2007 to study music at New York University\, where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Music. While there\, he had the opportunity to study with greats including Don Friedman\, Joe Lovano and John Scofield.  Alterman continues to perform at many world-renowned venues including the Kennedy Center\, Lincoln Center\, Birdland and New York’s Blue Note\, where Alterman has opened\, many times\, for Ramsey Lewis.  Les McCann said of the young Alterman “tiny\, but only in stature. SUMMARY:JOE GRANSDEN
DESCRIPTION:At 50 Years old\, Joe Gransden has already performed worldwide and released 17 CDs under his own name. Renowned first for the hard bop approach of his trumpet\, Gransden’s singing voice has been compared to that of Chet Baker and Frank Sinatra. Joe is from just north of Manhattan\, New York. Coming from a family full of musicians\, Joe’s introduction to music came early on through his father\, a gifted singer and pianist.  His grandfather was a trumpeter of merit\, playing professionally his whole life throughout New York. On his mother’s side of the family was the piano virtuoso Carmen Cavallero. \nA widening schedule has found Joe performing the 1st and 3rd Mondays of every month at Café 290 in Atlanta w/his 16 Piece Big Band \, The Blue Note in New York City\, The Jazz Corner in Hilton Head SC\, The Ritz-Carlton at Reynolds Plantation W/Michael Fienstein\, The Museum of Art and Design in midtown Manhattan\, Spivey Hall in Atlanta\, Ga and Tehema Golf Club in Carmel\, California (where Joe plays occasional events for Clint Eastwood). Joe also released his cd “Close To My Heart” produced by Saxophone great Kenny G. The cd is a collection of smooth jazz covers and originals written by Joe and Kenny. His project entitled “Songs of Sinatra & Friends” features Joe w/his 16 piece Big Band & Strings Celebrating the music of Frank Sinatra!  The CD and has been getting great reviews and lots of airplay around the country.
