SUMMARY:THE COOKERS
DESCRIPTION:The Cookers take their name from Night of the Cookers\, the famous 1965 recorded trumpet summit between Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard at Brooklyn’s Club La Marchal. Formed by trumpeter and organizer David Weiss\, the group brings together some of the most storied musicians in jazz\, players who came up in the 1960s and 70s working alongside the very architects of the music. \nDrummer Billy Hart and trumpeter Eddie Henderson were both members of Herbie Hancock’s groundbreaking Mwandishi group. Bassist Cecil McBee anchored Charles Lloyd’s celebrated quartet alongside Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. Pianist George Cables held the piano chair in bands led by Sonny Rollins\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Dexter Gordon\, and Art Pepper. Saxophonist Donald Harrison\, a recently named NEA Jazz Master\, came up performing with Art Blakey\, Roy Haynes\, and Herbie Hancock. \nTogether these musicians have contributed to well over a thousand recordings across the history of jazz\, and the chemistry between them\, forged over decades of shared history on bandstands around the world\, is unmistakable. DESCRIPTION:Mike Stern is one of the true guitar greats of his generation. There\, he plays with remarkable facility\, and his searing lines draw mainly on bebop and the blues. Since then\, he has released seventeen recordings as a leader\, six of which received Grammy nominations. Moreover\, his latest recording\, 2024’s Echoes and Other Songs\, features an all-star cast. \nMusicians\, critics and fans hail drummer Dennis Chambers for his technique and speed. SUMMARY:ANTONIO HART QUINTET
DESCRIPTION:When Antonio Hart was in ninth grade\, the music and art programs were cut out of the public schools. Antonio was devastated because the one thing that made school interesting was taken away from him. Having a friend that attended the then new Baltimore School for the Performing Arts\, somehow got Antonio an audition. He did the best he could because he really could not read the level of music he was trying to play. He prayed everyday\, but he did not think he would get in. One week to the day\, he received a transfer letter in the mail; he had been accepted! Hart considers this the beginning of his life as a young man and musician. \nHart’s real study of Jazz began at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There\, he studied with Bill Pierce\, Andy McGhee\, and Joe Viola. The three teachers gave him the foundation he needed to develop into a professional musician. Hart spent many hours in the library listening to all his favorite musicians\, and practicing and playing as much as he could. There were also many late hours in the practice room. Because of the lessons learned at the School for the Arts\, he really thought it was important to have a balance between music and academia\, so in his sophomore year he became a Music Education Major. The most important friendship at Berklee was with Roy Hargrove. They spent three years touring the world and recording Hargrove’s first three records. Hart considers Hargrove to be his brother in life and music. He even used Hargrove on his first recording ‘For the First Time.’ \nHis 1997 release\, ‘Here I Stand’ Impulse records\, earned Hart a 1997 Grammy nomination for ‘Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.’ He has also been in much demand as a guest on over 80 recordings. Since then\, Hart has recorded seven CDs as a leader. SUMMARY:BILL CHARLAP TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Bill Charlap was born in New York City into a deeply musical family\, his father was Broadway composer Moose Charlap\, whose credits include Peter Pan\, and his mother is singer Sandy Stewart\, a Grammy nominated vocalist who toured with Benny Goodman. Charlap began playing piano at age three and never looked back. In the late 1980s he joined Gerry Mulligan’s quintet\, and in 1995 secured one of the most coveted piano chairs in jazz with the Phil Woods Quintet. Since then he has performed with an extraordinary range of the music’s leading artists\, including Tony Bennett\, Wynton Marsalis\, Ron Carter\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Houston Person\, and Barbra Streisand. \nCharlap is widely regarded as one of the most gifted interpreters of the American songbook working today. Time magazine has written that he “approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved\, no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is\, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.” His acclaimed trio\, celebrated for its telepathic interplay and deep swing\, has been together for decades and has released nearly 20 albums together. In 2016\, his collaboration with Tony Bennett\, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern\, won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. From 2004 through 2023 he served as Artistic Director of New York City’s Jazz in July Festival at 92NY\, and he currently serves as Director of Jazz Studies at William Paterson University. \nJoining him for this special four night engagement are bassist David Wong and drummer Dennis Mackrel\, two of the most respected rhythm section players in jazz. DESCRIPTION:Willie Jones III is one of the world’s most celebrated drummers in modern jazz. As a band leader\, Willie Jones III has sold out a series of sets at Dizzy’s Club in New York City\, Club 1905 in Portland\, the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Los Angeles\, Club Bebop in Buenos Aires\, and Bimhuis in Amsterdam. The Los Angeles-born musician performed in the Roy Hargrove Quintet from 1998-2006. He was also one of two drummers in Hargrove’s powerhouse group RH Factor. \nJones has been featured on performances and tours with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and as a drummer of choice for legendary artists including Sonny Rollins\, Ernestine  Anderson\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Cedar Walton\, Frank Wess\, Bill Charlap\, Michael Brecker\, Herbie Hancock\, and Hank Jones.
