SUMMARY:KAT EDMONSON
DESCRIPTION:Holiday Swingin’ ~ A Kat Edmonson Christmas\n\nThe Philadelphia Inquirer Jazz Vivace proudly presents Kat Edmonson as part of the Winter 2024 Jazz Series. Kat Edmonson is an award-winning songwriter and singer with an equal foothold in jazz\, cabaret\, and vintage cosmopolitanism pop (The New York Times).\n\nRaised on the music and film of the early-to-mid-twentieth century\, Kat is a rare artist who embodies the spirit of the past while remaining resolutely au courant. She performs original songs and familiar classics in her live show\, interweaving humorous anecdotes\, philosophical musings\, and her love of film with disarming candor and vulnerability. Her longtime band members’ keen and sensitive accompaniment allows Kat to veer off-script as she’s often inclined to do freely. She has been featured on Austin City Limits\, Tiny Desk Concerts\, A Prairie Home Companion\, and The Tonight Show.\n\nHer modern-day variety show ran for 66 episodes. Kat Edmonson and her band have recorded a Christmas album including Yule-tide favorites such as Jingle Bell Rock\, O Christmas Tree\, and Let It Snow. Holiday Swingin’! A Kat Edmonson Christmas Vol. 1 (released 11/09/2021) was described by Jazziz as “impeccably hip” and included in the New York Times “13 Albums That Revisist (and Redefine!) Holiday Classics”.\n\nA $15 drink/food minimum is charged per person in the party\, per set\, if the total for beverages purchased by the party does not meet the minimum.

SUMMARY:WESSELL "WARMDADDY" ANDERSON
DESCRIPTION:Alto saxophonistWessell “Warmdaddy” Anderson grew up in the tough Bedford Stuyvesent and Crown Heights neighborhoods of Brooklyn\, NY. By the time Anderson was 14 years old\, he was deeply involved in the local jazz scene (thanks in part to his father\, a drummer) and attending jam sessions at then-active Brooklyn and Queens jazz clubs like the Blue Coronet\, Pumpkin’s\, and the Turbo Village. \nAnderson later studied at Harlem’s famed Jazzmobile workshops with the likes of Frank Wess\, Charles Davis\, and Frank Foster. Here\, Anderson also met Wynton and Branford Marsalis\, who were both playing with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers at the time. At Branford’s urging\, Anderson soon departed New York to study with famed clarinetist Alvin Batiste at Southern University in Baton Rouge\, LA. \nIt wasn’t long before Anderson got his first big break\, when Wynton Marsalis asked Anderson to tour with the Wynton Marsalis Septet. Soon\, Anderson was off to the studio and the road with Marsalis\, helping make some of the most defining music of the late-’80s and early-’90s jazz revival. Although Marsalis disbanded the group in 1995\, Anderson is still the first string alto saxist with Marsalis’ Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. \nIt was during his time with Marsalis’ group that Anderson began to develop his own sound: a mix of traditional New Orleans jazz  and a sweeping blues style similar to that of Cannonball Adderley\, and Wynton thus dubbed him “Warmdaddy” soul. \nThe Quintet\nWess “Warmdaddy” Anderson – saxophone\nEd Perkins – vocals\nVictor Atkins – piano\nRobin Sherman – bass\nJason Marsalis – drums

SUMMARY:DELFEAYO MARSALIS & THE UPTOWN JAZZ ORCHESTRA
DESCRIPTION:Delfeayo Marsalis is one of the top trombonists\, composers\, and producers in jazz today. Known for his “technical excellence\, inventive mind and frequent touches of humor…” (Los Angeles Times)\, he is “…one of the best\, most imaginative and musical of the trombonists of his generation.” (San Francisco Examiner).\n\nEarly influences on Delfeayo’s style include J.J. Johnson\, Curtis Fuller\, Al Grey\, Tyree Glenn\, Tommy Dorsey\, and Duke Ellington’s trombone masters. From the age of 17 until the present\, he has produced over 100 recordings for major artists\, including Harry Connick Jr\, Spike Lee\, Terence Blanchard\, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, and his father and brothers.\n\nIn January 2011\, Delfeayo and the Marsalis family (father Ellis and brothers Branford\, Wynton\, and Jason) earned the nation’s highest jazz honor – a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award\, thus dubbing them “America’s First Family of Jazz.”\n\n\nOn packing a full jazz orchestra into a tiny historic jazz club: “Whatever you have to do\,” the trombonist says philosophically. But when the band plays the swing and bebop hits from the 1930s through the 1960s\, the music is just as tight. SUMMARY:CHRISTIAN SANDS
DESCRIPTION:Steinway Artist & 6-time Grammy Nominee Christian Sands is an emerging jazz force. His abundant piano technique perfectly matches his conception\, accomplishing a much deeper musical goal: a fresh look at the entire language of jazz. \nIt wasn’t long ago Christian Sands was being called “a jazz star of the future” by such luminaries as Wynton Marsalis and Christian McBride\, whom he toured the world with as part of McBride’s Trio. Well\, that future has arrived. At only 32\, pianist and composer Christian Sands is arguably the leading pianist of his generation. \n“…few of his peers have so many achievements to contemplate: piano prodigy at the age of four\, leading gigs at 12 and playing with masters like Billy Taylor\, Oscar Peterson and Herbie Hancock during his teens.” – Downbeat Magazine
