SUMMARY:RUSSELL MALONE
DESCRIPTION:“Obviously\, we are in the capable hands of a master. Absolutely fluid touch and beautiful integration between moving lines and harmonic cadences. The sound of the instrument is well-balanced throughout the entire register. The relaxed quality of everything that’s being played gives it such a warm feeling. To play that stuff is extremely hard. This is an absolute master\, the best of the best.”— Kurt Rosenwinkel\, responding to Russell Malone’s solo performance of “Remind Me” on Playground [MaxJazz\, 2004]\, in a DownBeat Blindfold Test. \nRussell Malone is one of the signature guitar players of his generation. The several recordings since 1992\, Malone is as well-known on the international circuit for helming a world-class quartet and trio as he is for his long-standing participation in Ron Carter’s Golden Striker Trio\, and his recent consequential contribution to the musical production of the likes of Sonny Rollins and Dianne Reeves\, who recruited Malone for his singular tone\, refined listening skills\, limitless chops\, and efflorescent imagination. \nIn all these circumstances\, Malone addresses the tradition on its own terms\, refracting the vocabularies and syntax of such heroes as Charlie Christian\, Chet Atkins\, George Van Eps\, Johnny Smith\, Wes Montgomery\, Grant Green\, Kenny Burrell\, Pat Martino\, and George Benson into an argot entirely his own. A master of all tempos\, a relentless swinger\, he spins his stories —in idioms ranging from the urban and downhome blues\, country\, gospel\, various corners of the American Songbook\, and hardcore jazz—with a soulful\, instantly recognizable instrumental voice\, and seasons them with sophisticated harmonies that are never “too hip for the room.” \n“I take pride on being open enough to play with anybody\,” says Malone\, citing encounters with such diverse artists as B.B. King\, Andy Williams\, James “Blood” Ulmer\, and Ornette Coleman. “I love to swing\, but I won’t turn up my nose at any style of music—or any other musician—because it’s different. I’ll play with anybody\, if the music is good.” \nTicket Fee: $7.00 | $15 food/beverage minimum per person not included in ticket price.

SUMMARY:TONY HIGHTOWER
DESCRIPTION:Singer/Songwriter Tony Hightower is taking up the mantle to be a bridge that ushers R&B audiences into Jazz…Real Jazz. With years of experience as a musical performer and actor with familiar roots that place him firmly within the music’s firmament\, Atlanta-native Hightower is still just getting started on this benevolent turn in his journey. And he is bringing a lot of young people with him. \nHis sophomore project\, LEGACY\, finds Hightower exploring Jazz vocal stylings from a dazzling prism of angles. The 10-song album moves confidently and assuredly from original compositions such as the soulful scat-laced “All to the Good\,” the seductive Brazilian bossa nova of “Rendezvous” and the tender carnal Jarreau-esque love beg “I Need You” to swingin’ covers of Earth\, Wind & Fire’s classic Skip Scarborough-penned “Can’t Hide Love\,” a mean shuffle boogie groove through Al Green’s “Love and Happiness” and a smoldering upright bass accompanied tiptoe through the 1929 Andy Razaf standard “Gee\, Baby\, Ain’t I Good To You” made further famous in 1944 by one of Hightower’s greatest and earliest Jazz vocal heroes\, Nat “King” Cole. That one’ll make the women wiggle.

SUMMARY:RUSSELL MALONE
DESCRIPTION:Russell Malone is one of the signature guitar players of his generation. A master of all tempos\, a relentless swinger\, he spins his stories —in idioms ranging from the urban and down-home blues\, country\, gospel\, various corners of the American Songbook\, and hardcore jazz—with a soulful\, instantly recognizable instrumental voice\, and seasons them with sophisticated harmonies that are never “too hip for the room.”

SUMMARY:STANLEY JORDAN
DESCRIPTION:In a career that took flight in 1985 with commercial and critical acclaim\, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness\, imagination\, versatility and maverick daring. Be it bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits\, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works-solo or with a group-Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected. \nKey to Jordan’s fast-track acclaim was his mastery of a special technique on the guitar’s fretboard. Instead of conventional strumming and picking\, Jordan’s innovative “touch technique” is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While a handful of other players were using similar techniques\, Stanley’s fluid\, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity raised the bar for excellence. But his technique\, though impressive\, is always a means to a musical end. His music is imbued with a warmth and sensitivity that has captured the imagination of listeners worldwide. A classically trained pianist before playing guitar\, Jordan wanted greater freedom in voicing chords on his guitar\, so he applied piano principles to do so. Jordan’s touch technique allows the guitarist to play melody and chords simultaneously with an unprecedented level of independence. It also allows Jordan to play simultaneously on two different guitars\, or even on guitar and piano. He says that “I think of it as a single instrument\, but one with a wide range of tonal colors-that’s why I do it.” \nTo date Jordan has performed in over 60 countries on 6 continents. He has performed at many festivals\, including the Kool Jazz Festival\, the Concord Jazz Festival\, and the Montreaux International Jazz Festival. During the 1980s he collaborated with a diverse array of artists\, including performances with Art Blakey and Richie Cole and recordings with Stanley Clarke and Kenny Rogers. The track with Rogers\, “Morning Desire”\, became America’s #1 country song in 1986. Later Jordan became a frequent guest with Les Paul during Paul’s legendary Monday nights at Iridium in New York. Today Jordan performs frequently as a soloist and with his band\, as well as collaborating with other guitarists such as Kevin Eubanks\, Sharon Isbin and Muriel Anderson. He’s also a frequent guest with jam bands such as the Dave Matthews Band\, the String Cheese Incident\, Phil Lesh\, Moe and Umphrey’s McGee.

SUMMARY:TRIBUTE TO PHAROAH SANDERS
DESCRIPTION:Gary Bartz [Saxophone]\nJean Carn [Vocals]\nNorman Connors [Vocals & Drums]\nEddie Baccus Jr. [Saxophone] \nThe Starship Orchestra \nKnown for his overblowing\, harmonic\, and multi-phonic techniques on the saxophone\, as well as his use of “sheets of sound”\, American jazz musician Pharaoh Sanders played a prominent role in the development of free jazz and spiritual jazz through his work as a member of John Coltrane’s groups in the mid-1960s\, and later through his solo work. He released over thirty albums as a leader and collaborated extensively with vocalist Leon Thomas and pianist Alice Coltrane\, among many others. Fellow saxophonist Ornette Coleman once described him as “probably the best tenor player in the world”. Most of Sanders’ best-selling work was made in the late 1960s and early 1970s for Impulse Records\, including the 30-minute wave-on-wave of free jazz “The Creator Has a Master Plan” from the album Karma. \nA native of Baltimore\, Gary Bartz has been known to many as a trail blazer in the music business from the moment he started playing with Art Blakey at his father’s jazz club in his hometown to his own music throughout the 57 years as a professional musician. As if his Grammy Award with McCoy Tyner in 2005 (‘Illuminations’) wasn’t enough to carve out a place for Bartz in the jazz genre\, he has broken the mold with more than 40 solo albums and over 200 as a guest artist. \nDrummer and producer Norman Connors’ work has become a main staple of jazz-fusion\, with tracks including “Mother Of The Future” from album “Slew Foot” (1974)\, “Captain Connors” from album “This Is Your Life” (1977)\, “You Are My Starship” (1976) album\, et al. He has lead jazz recordings with Carlos Garnett\, Gary Bartz\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, and Herbie Hancock. \nJean Carn began her recording career with her then-husband\, pianist Doug Carn\, founder of Black Jazz Records and had an astounding five octave voice range. She sang background for artists including the likes of Earth\, Wind & Fire and Norman Connors\, but in 1977\, she debuted solo\, playing a crucial role in the golden era of Philly soul. \nStreaming: $10.00 + fees \nShowtimes ~ Saturday: 7:00 & 9:30pm | Sunday: 5:00 & 7:30pm

SUMMARY:MADELEINE PEYROUX
DESCRIPTION:Every great musical project starts with a feeling that it’s time.So it was\, in 2004\, for Madeleine Peyroux: “when I got around to making Careless Love it had been a good eight years since my first album.” Eight years—forever in the music world. Not long After Dreamland dropped in ’96\, she had disappeared from the touring scene as well. Where had she been? What had she been doing\, and why?I was traveling a lot across America\, rediscovering the country and re-identifying as an American. I was born here in the States but moved with my mother to live in Paris when I was young. I met family I never met before. I caught up on what was happening with the music here. It was all a culture shock for me. When I came back to New York to make that first album I was like a deer in the headlights. It was my first time in a studio\, my first time back in America. Then 9/11 happened. Then George W. got re-elected. It was like the world was going crazy. After Dreamland I had signed with Sony and I was trying to make my second record. I was broke and I didn’t know what I was going to do next.Self-reflection and spiritual sensitivity are assets to any musician in the process of starting a career\, of establishing one’s musical identity and direction. They don’t\, however\, necessarily lock into the typical velocity of career-building. There were other things Peyroux had to handle. She underwent surgery on her vocal cords. She healed and worked with a vocal coach. As the ‘90s gave way to the first years of a new century\, she continued to question the how and\, significantly\, the why of what she was doing. (Her choice of the Dylan Thomas quote below\, from his 1946 poem “In my Craft and Sullen Art\,” helps explain her creative motivation.)

SUMMARY:JOE ALTERMAN
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta native Joe Alterman expresses a certain upbeat naivete\, with a broad smile and bright eyes that make you feel welcome. One would not guess that this is a man hailed by greats; Ramsey Lewis describes his music as “happy music with tasty meat on the bones\,” Les McCann states “Joe’s on a ‘blow your mind’ level\,” and Ahmad Jamal calls him “a very special artist.” Journalist Nat Hentoff championed three of Alterman’s albums\, as well as his writing (Joe wrote liner notes to three Wynton Marsalis/JLCO albums)\, calling one of Joe’s columns “one of the very best pieces on the essence of jazz\, the spirit of jazz\, that I’ve ever read\, and I’m not exaggerating.” \nHe began at NYU with a BA and Masters in Jazz Piano from NYU and has since performed at many world renowned venues including the Kennedy Center\, Lincoln Center\, Birdland and Blue Note alongside Houston Person\, Les McCann\, Dick Gregory\, Ramsey Lewis\, and his own trio\, among others. Downbeat describes his sound as “rooted in the blues\, and with a touch reminiscent of the great pianists of the 1950s—Red Garland\, Ahmad Jamal\, Bill Evans.” It is clear Joe hits all of the necessary points for Jazz critics and fans alike. \nBut there is more to the story\, of course. The 21st century has brought another transition for this thing called jazz; in one moment we see the push and pull between tradition and progression\, and in another we see Pop and Hip-Hop musicians emulating and sampling. In Joe Alterman we find none of this struggle; the music just sounds good. Our conscious faculties are instantly disabled as we tap our feet\, feeling the intent and joy of his playing. An old classic is new when you feel good in the moment. Or\, as Hentoff wrote about Alterman in the Wall Street Journal\, “Alterman’s continually evolving presence on the jazz scene surely makes people smile and\, if the room is right\, dance. There’ll be no need for any last rites of jazz.”

SUMMARY:KATE BAKER
DESCRIPTION:Kate Baker is a critically acclaimed jazz singer hailing from\, and currently residing in\, New Jersey. Her debut album\, 2022’s Return to Shore\, is a luminous guitar-and-voice duet with her late husband\, Vic Juris\, who passed away in 2019. \nThe throughline is Baker’s inimitable voice\, which resonates with her love of diverse musical inspirations — whether jazz\, Brazilian\, Latin\, or the blues. Be it English or Portuguese\, a Cole Porter standard or an Antônio Carlos Jobim composition\, Baker effortlessly makes herself right at home. \nFor two decades\, she frequently performed with Juris\, but that\, too\, isn’t the long and short of it.
