SUMMARY:RONI BEN~HUR SEXTET FEATURING GEORGE CABLES
DESCRIPTION:• Remembering Barry Harris \nBen~Hur started playing guitar when he was eleven. He learned about jazz from a high school’s friend’s record collection. In Israel he performed in clubs and at weddings and bar mitzvahs until he had enough money to move to the U.S. He arrived in New York City in 1985\, spending time at Barry Harris’s Jazz Cultural Theater. He took lessons from Harris\, then became a member of his band. \nBen-Hur’s experience as an educator dates back to 1981 in Israel. In the U.S. he started jazz music programs at Professional Performing Arts School\, the Coalition School for Social Change\, and at the Lucy Moses School. At the request of Bette Midler\, he started a jazz program for New York City high schools.[1] Ben-Hur began a jazz camp in Saint-Cézaire-sur-Siagne\, France\, with Santi Debriano. With Nilson Matta\, he began a jazz and Brazilian music camp in Bar Harbor\, Maine\, both intended for adult jazz amateurs. He is the founding director of the jazz program at the Lucy Moses School at Kaufman Center in Manhattan where he teaches. \nHis book Talk Jazz: Guitar (Mel Bay\, 2004) includes a CD with a removable guitar track of Ben-Hur performing the exercises in the book with Tardo Hammer on piano\, Earl May on bass\, and Leroy Williams on drums. \nHis album Anna’s Dance was named by The Village Voice one of the best jazz albums of 2001. All About Jazz called him “a virtuoso guitarist with impeccable swing”. In 2000\, he won the Jazziz reader poll for “Best New Talent”.

SUMMARY:EDDIE HENDERSON QUINTET
DESCRIPTION:Witness to History Record Release!\n\n“His musical wisdom\, gleaned during decades spent on the best jazz bandstands\, informs every unerring note.” – Downbeat. Eddie Henderson – trumpet Donald Harrison – alto saxophone George Cables – piano Gerald Cannon – bass Lenny White – drums Trumpeter Eddie Henderson celebrates the release of a highly anticipated new recording\, Witness to History\, that reflects on his incredible life in music and whose arrival coincides with the 50th anniversary of his 1973 recording debut as a leader\, Realization. \nJoining Henderson for these release performances is the spectacular quintet of his closest collaborators that he convened for the recording\, including alto saxophonist Donald Harrison\, pianist George Cables\, bassist Gerald Cannon\, and drummer Lenny White. Henderson’s “deft feel and plush sound made him a central figure in the worlds of jazz-funk and hard-bop in the 1970s\,” according to The New York Times. The Chicago Reader adds\, “His progressive\, assured\, and imaginative improvisations roll out in a glorious sun-splashed tone… he seems to dance through his solos\, balancing his quick clockwork technique with bursts of bluesy soul.” The eternally youthful Henderson has proven again that he is still making some of the most important music of his career into his 80s.

SUMMARY:DEVIN PHILLIPS QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:Devin Phillips\, Saxophones | Kiran Raphael\, Piano | Eric Gruber\, Bass | Tyson Stubelek\, Drums\n\nBorn and reared in New Orleans\, Devin Phillips’s intense affair with the saxophone began at the age of eight. At 14\, he was accepted into the prestigious New Orleans Center for Creative Arts\, whose alumni include Wynton and Branford Marsalis\, Harry Connick\, Jr. and Nicholas Payton. There\, trained in music theory and multi-styles composition\, he graduated in 2000 with top honors. He has also tutored under clarinetist and educator Alvin Batiste. Like many budding young horn players form the Big Easy\, he put his time in playing with the local brass bands in a traditional process of initiation in the musical process. Devin Phillips has paid his dues performing\, touring and recording with top jazz artists such as Wynton Marsalis\, Eddie Palmieri\, The Headhunters\, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra\, musician Lenny Kravitz\, and Los Hombres Caliente\, with whom he recorded two award-winning albums.\n\nHis reputation as a sax man with intricate and rhythmically innovative sounds made him a popular feature at jazz festivals: France’s Jazz de Vien Festival; Tokyo’s JVC Jazz Festival; Itanbul’s The Ruins; Spain’s Barcelona Jazz Festival; the Netherlands’ North Sea Jazz and the New Orleans Jazz Festival. In 2005\, Phillips formed New Orleans Straight Ahead. But in August\, Hurricane Katrina muted the music. With all gone\, save his sax\, and his family scattered throughout the U.S.\, Phillips evacuated to Portland and reformed New Orleans Straight Ahead with other musician evacuees. Phillips and took advantage of a program created by the PDXJazz Festival in partnership with Azumano Travel\, which invited jazz musicians affected by the hurricane to come to Portland with their families\, either for temporary shelter or for good. The invitation included free transportation to Portland\, temporary housing\, and access to an active jazz network with performance and workshop opportunities. Over the course of six months\, more than 50 New Orleans musicians traveled to Oregon\, a dozen musicians\, including Phillips\, have decided to remain in Portland. Since arriving\, Phillips has performed at a number of local clubs and appreciated the opportunity to be part of the Portland Jazz Festival. Phillips says that opening the festival with “Amazing Grace\,” talking with McCoy Tyner and being asked to stand in for one of Eddie Palmieri’s frontline players were high points for him.

SUMMARY:VANESSA RUBIN QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:New York City vocalist extraordinaire and 2020 NAACP Image Awards nominee makes a one-night-only return. \nVanessa’s journey to becoming a jazz singer could be said to have begun at an early age. She was characterized by her mother as always being “a very vocal child\,” and knew Vanessa would\, “do something with that big ol’ mouth of hers.” Coming from parents who valued academia\, discipline and hard work\, that “something” was meant to be law school. Attaining a BA from the The Ohio State School of Journalism in 1979 was not a disappointment. However\, her decision to pursue a career jazz singing did come as a surprise. Vanessa’s fascination with language coupled with her passion for music\, especially jazz\, pointed her on a collision course toward jazz performance. \nHer “a-ha” moment came during a college beauty pageant at which Vanessa was accompanied by a very young\, and even then\, a very capable Bobby Floyd of Columbus\, Ohio. Her first performance of a jazz evergreen\, the Billie Holiday original “God Bless The Child\,” garnered both rousing applause and the winning talent award. Most importantly though\, it awakened what Vanessa describes as “her calling.” “I fell in love with the moment\, the music\, the audience and the effect it had on them and me\,” Rubin remembers. \nVanessa’s first gigs began around 1980 in small clubs around Cleveland such as Tucker’s Place\, Bob’s Toast of the Town\, Lancer’s Steak House\, Club Isabella\, The Native Son and The Teal Lounge. Some early band mates included Wynn Bibbs\, Skip Gibson\, saxophonist and arranger Willie Smith\, Neal Creque\, Matthew “Chink” Stevenson and\, later\, the uniquely soulful organ quartet of The Blackshaw Brothers with Cecil Rucker on vibes. “We worked 8 days a week all over Cleveland catching the tail end of what was left over from the good old days\,” Rubin recalls. After two years\, Rubin was anxious to set her sights on New York where she earnestly and humbly soaked up the tutelage of many veterans like Pharaoh Sanders\, Frank Foster and Barry Harris.
