SUMMARY:FRED HERSCH TRIO
DESCRIPTION:In the quest to describe the music of Fred Hersch in a word — a preposterous task\, but not a pointless one — you could do a lot worse than “refinement.” Mr. Hersch is a pianist of cultivated taste and erudition; he’s also the sort of jazz musician who brings a lissome elegance to his playing\, disinclined to accentuate the effort behind it all. But there’s another definition of refinement that has to do with painstaking progress\, the incremental stretch toward an elusive ideal. \nFred Hersch – Piano\nDrew Gress – Bass\nJochen Rückert – Drums

SUMMARY:BILLY HART QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:One of the leading drummers of his generation\, Billy Hart continues to make jazz history with his quartet. Working with the phenomenally creative and talented pianist Ethan Iverson\, saxophonist Mark Turner\, and bassist Ben Street\, Hart constantly seeks new territory\, pushing the boundaries of post-bop and straight-ahead\, of free jazz and composition\, all the while embracing beauty and soulful communication. Turner’s rich\, gorgeous tenor and Iverson’s exquisite technique combine to create a nearly infinite variety of textures and colors. Street and Hart have an uncanny connection that enables them to move effortlessly between swinging\, tight grooves and sonic landscapes. Hart made an indelible mark on the jazz world in the ’60s and ’70s with his work with such jazz legends as Jimmy Smith\, Wes Montgomery\, McCoy Tyner\, Wayne Shorter\, Joe Zawinul\, Eddie Harris\, Marian McPartland\, Stan Getz\, Herbie Hancock\, and Miles Davis. Less known is his earlier work with soul artists Otis Redding and Sam and Dave. \nMark Turner – Saxophone\nEthan Iverson – Piano\nBen Street – Bass\nBilly Hart – Drums

SUMMARY:THE YELLOWJACKETS
DESCRIPTION:The Yellowjackets formed in the late 1970’s as the backup band for guitarist Robben Ford. They recorded their first album together in 1980. Shortly after that recording\, however\, Ford decided to part ways and go in a different musical direction. As a result\, the modern day Yellowjackets were formed — a trio with Russell Ferrante\, Jimmy Haslip and Ricky Lawson. Since then\, and with the addition of Bob Mintzer\, the Yellowjackets have gained and maintained prominence as one of jazz’s most influential and loved groups. \nThe most recent addition to the band adds Australian bass player Dane Alderson in to the mix. With his exceptional rhythmic sensibility and natural disposition toward groove\, Dane brings a new energy to the band and adds a youthful approach to the music. \nShowtimes: \n7:00 pm | Sat ~ $40.00\, Sun ~ $30.00 \n9:00 pm | Sat ~ $40.00\, Sun ~ $20.00 \n$15 food/beverage minimum per person not included in ticket price.

SUMMARY:AN EVENING WITH PAT METHENY
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Pat Metheny w/ Antonio Sanchez\, Linda May Han Oh & Gwilym Simcock \nNEA Jazz Master Pat Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton\, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style\, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility – a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody\, swing\, and the blues. With the release of his first album\, Bright Size Life (1975)\, he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career\, Pat Metheny has continued to re-define the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument. Metheny’s versatility is almost nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years\, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. SUMMARY:STANLEY JORDAN
DESCRIPTION:In a career that took flight with immediate commercial success and critical acclaim\, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness\, imagination\, versatility and maverick daring. Be it bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits\, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works—solo or with a group—Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected. \nKey to Jordan’s fast-track acclaim was his mastery of a special technique on the guitar’s fretboard. Instead of conventional strumming and picking\, Jordan’s innovative “touch technique” is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While a handful of other players were using similar techniques\, Stanley’s fluid\, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity raised the bar for excellence. \nShowtimes: \n7:00 pm | Thurs\, Sun ~ $30.00\, Fri\, Sat ~ $35.00 \n9:00 pm | Thurs\, Sun ~ $20.00\, Fri\, Sat ~ $35.00 \n$15 food/beverage minimum per person not included in ticket price.

SUMMARY:CYRUS CHESTNUT
DESCRIPTION:“I like to construct melodies that tell stories\, based on what I’ve seen\, what I feel and what I hear\,” Chestnut explains. “If I can connect to what I’m playing\, then I’ll be able to share it. That’s why you may think that some of what I do seems simple\, but when you get into it\, it’s not as simple as you think.” — Cyrus Chestnut \nPianist Cyrus Chestnut appeals to both aficionados and fans alike. Adept enough to perform with Wynton Marsalis\, yet hip enough to make the “Peanuts” album swing. Chestnut worked with a number of top-notch musicians including Jon Hendricks\, Betty Carter\, Terence Blanchard\, and Donald Harrison\, before recording his first solo CD at the age of 30. Chestnut enjoys mixing styles and resists being typecast in any one niche\, though his gospel sound is apparent on a number of his recordings. \nShowtimes: \nSat\, July 30\, 8:00 pm & 10:00 pm ~ $40.00 \nSun\, July 31\, 8:00 pm ~ $40.00 | 10:00 pm ~ $20.00 \n$15 food/beverage minimum per person not included in ticket price.
