SUMMARY:RONI BEN-HUR QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:While many of the compositions on Love Letters were written by giants such as Leonard Bernstein (“Lonely Town”)\, Benny Golson (“Fair Weather”)\, and Ben-Hur’s long-time mentor\, the late\, great Barry Harris (“To Dizzy with Love”)\, Ben-Hur once again showcases his formidable composing chops with four original compositions. With the Quartet on Love Letters\, Ben-Hur creates an irresistible atmosphere of musical harmony and loving connection. Each of Ben-Hur’s compositions reflect an aspect of the love that has propelled the guitarist to ever greater heights in the life and in jazz. With “To Dizzy with Love\,” he shares a memory of his friend Barry Harris with a buoyant rendition of a song they once played together at Birdland. In this interpretation we are treated to a joyous dance of swing and Caribbean rhythms. On “Seul `a Paris” (alone in Paris)\, Ben-Hur’s wistful strings and muted trumpet speak of what it is like to fly solo in the “City of Love.” With the composition\, “Waiting for JH”\, co-written with the late American pianist Chris Anderson\, \nBen-Hur sends a “love letter” to the late Jim Harrison\, one of the genre’s most indomitable advocates and promoters\, who worked tirelessly for a “who’s who” in jazz. The voice of the unspeakable is heard in “The House that Yosef Built\,” a love letter to Ben-Hur’s father. The tune evokes a rush of memories about the hardships his parents faced in their escape from Tunisia in the aftermath of World War II.  Guitar\, bass and drum deftly lay a rhythmic foundation\, and Jensen’s triumphant trumpet celebrates the family’s resilience and the sturdy house and home that Yosef Ben-Hur was determined to build for his family.

SUMMARY:BRANDEE YOUNGER
DESCRIPTION:The sonically innovative harpist\, Brandee Younger\, is revolutionizing harp for the digital era. Over the past fifteen years\, she has worked relentlessly to stretch boundaries and limitations for harpists. In 2022\, she made history by becoming the first black woman to be nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. That same year\, she was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Ever-expanding as an artist\, she has worked with cultural icons including Common\, Lauryn Hill\, John Legend\, and Moses Sumney. Her current album\, Brand New Life\, builds on her already rich oeuvre\, and cements the harp’s place in pop culture. As the title of the album suggests\, Brand New Life is about forging new paths–artistic\, personal\, political\, and spiritual. On this album\, Younger salutes her musical foremother\, the trailblazing harpist Dorothy Ashby\, while also speaking to the sentiments of more recent generations. “We’re bringing new life to Dorothy Ashby’s popular and previously unreleased compositions. We’re creating new life…for the instrument\,” Younger said. Brand New Life is an album about living fully\, in neon bright color.

The twenty-first century has thus far seen yet another transition for this thing called Jazz. In one moment we see the push and pull between tradition and progression\, and in another we see Pop and Hip-Hop musicians emulating and sampling. In Joe Alterman we find none of this struggle; the music just sounds good. Our conscious faculties are instantly disabled as we tap our feet\, feeling the intent and joy of his playing. SUMMARY:EUGENIE JONES
DESCRIPTION:Eugenie Jones is an award-winning American Jazz singer/songwriter\, producer\, and legacy activist. Born and raised in Morgantown\, West Virginia\, Jones grew up with four sisters and three brothers. Her father\, Eugene\, was the choir director at the family’s church\, and her mother\, Tommie Lee\, was the choir’s lead soprano. Jones grew up listening to her mother’s voice\, perpetually singing around the house and at local community events. However\, in these early years\, Jones possessed no latent desire to follow in her mother’s footsteps. She grew up\, earned her MBA\, and eventually made her home in Seattle\, entering the business world as a nonprofit marketing communications expert working in housing for the homeless advocacy. \nHer singing career began late in life after the death of her mother in 2008. “Beyond my grief\, I felt a void that I later recognized as missing the sound of my mother singing. Seeking solace and a positive way forward\, I wondered if I could carry on that part of her.” That speculation led Jones to the Seattle jazz scene and ultimately to pursue something she had never imagined – a career in music. On her independent label\, Open Mic Records\, Jones has successfully produced three award-winning recording projects comprised primarily of her original material. She has recorded more than 30 original songs and is characterized as a “cleverly gifted lyricist.” Her projects have resulted in her winning the Pacific NW Earshot Jazz Vocalist of the Year and Recording of the Year Golden Ear awards. \nThe Band: \nEugenie Jones ~ voice\nPeter Adams ~ piano\nJonathan Green ~ upright bass\nRon Steen ~ drums

SUMMARY:BOB JAMES
DESCRIPTION:The career of Bob James is long\, varied and continues to evolve at every turn. From his first days in Marshall\, Missouri\, the music of Bob James has captivated audiences throughout the world. \nDiscovered by Quincy Jones at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1963\, James recorded his first solo album\, Bold Conceptions\, that year for Mercury Records. 58 albums and innumerable awards would follow through five decades. He honed his skills working with Creed Taylor\, working on albums for artists like Hank Crawford\, Grover Washington\, Jr\, among others.  While with CTI\, James found great popular success overseeing significant hits for Paul Simon\, Neil Diamond\, Maynard Ferguson\, and Kenny Loggins. \nIn 1974\, James finally recorded his own album\, One\, which launched a lifelong career of recording and performing live. After three more albums\, James began his own label\, Tappan Zee Records.   This allowed James to spend more time in the studio\, focusing on his own creative works.  It was during this time that he recorded his own gold seller\, Touchdown\, which included his composition\, “Angela”\, the instrumental theme from the sitcom Taxi\, and possibly James’ best know work.  Bob composed all the original music used in that television series for its entire run. One On One\, the first in three collaborations with Earl Klugh\, was awarded a Grammy in 1980 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance\, and has sold over a million copies. During this time\, James set the standard for the smooth jazz sound in the late 1970s. \nCover: $56 ~ $80
