SUMMARY:KLAUS MUELLER BRAZILIAN QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:A jazz pianist of diverse influences and abilities\, Klaus Mueller\, was born in Germany and raised in Japan\, Chile\, and Brazil. He began piano lessons in Japan at the age of six. After graduating from Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts in 1998\, he was granted a full scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service to further complete his studies at the New School in New York. \nHe has been an integral part of the New York Jazz and Brazilian music scene\, having performed and recorded with artists including Portinho\, Ron Carter\, New York Voices\, Harry Allen\, Leny Andrade\, Paquito D’ Rivera\, Steve LaSpina\, Emilio Santiago\, Marcos Valle\, Toninho Horta\, and Filó Machado. Tours and workshops have led him throughout the United States\, Europe\, the United Kingdom\, Russia\, and the Caribbean. \nMueller is not only regarded as a fine keyboardist but also as an arranger\, most notably for jazz piano legend Herbie Hancock\, creating orchestral versions of songs from Hancock’s critically acclaimed “Gershwin’s World” album in collaboration with Robert Sadin in 2003. He also arranged music for the prestigious classical label Deutsche Grammophon\, and worked as a musical director and accompanist for the opera singer and Tony Award-winner Paulo Szot. \nOn Mueller’s 2012 album release Far-Faraway\, he performed with jazz bassist Ron Carter and Brazilian drummer Portinho. He has also performed with Elias Lopes\, one of Puerto Rico’s most influential Latin Jazz trumpeters. He has toured and headlined with Tito Puente\, Jr.\, and recorded his own CD produced by Latin jazz saxophonist Luis Disla. Armando has established an enthusiastic following in and beyond Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Jeff “Tain” Watts – drums\nPaul Bollenback – guitar\nJames Francies – piano\nChris Smith – bass\nGary Thomas – tenor saxophone \nJeff “Tain” Watts is one of the most in demand jazz drummers in the world today. Jeff Watts majored in classical percussion at Pittsburgh’s Duquesne University\, where he was primarily a timpanist\, followed by enrollment at the Berklee School of Music\, where he pursued jazz studies alongside such talented players as Branford Marsalis\, Kevin Eubanks\, Greg Osby\, Aimee Mann\, Steve Vai and Marvin “Smitty” Smith. Jeff joined the Wynton Marsalis Quartet in 1981 and proceeded to win three Grammy Awards with the ensemble. Watts left Wynton Marsalis in 1988. After working with George Benson\, Harry Connick. Jr. and McCoy Tyner\, he joined the Branford Marsalis Quartet in 1989. Jeff has worked in the film and television industry as both a musician on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and as an actor\, Rhythm Jones in Spike Lee’s “Mo Better Blues”. Jeff joined Kenny Garrett’s band after returning to New York in 1995 after three years in LA on the Tonight Show. \nAlong with explosive power\, blinding speed and mastery of complex rhythms and time signatures\, Watts brings a rare sense of elegance\, tried-by-fire composure\, and a gritty street funk to his music. His artistic ingenuity expresses itself in his incomparable technique\, sweltering sense of swing\, and an extraordinary ability to imbue his music with majestic grace and elegant repose. A true jazz innovator\, Watts never fails to deliver the percussive magic that has been his trademark since his emergence on the contemporary jazz scene. \nPaul Bollenback is a jazz guitarist who has appeared on Entertainment Tonight\, The Tonight Show\, The Today Show\, Joan Rivers\, and Good Morning America. He has performed with Scott Ambush\, Charlie Byrd\, Joey DeFrancesco\, Herb Ellis\, Della Reese\, Arturo Sandoval\, and Stanley Turrentine. \nPlenty of young musicians show promise\, but very few enjoy the sort of meteoric rise that pianist\, keyboardist and composer James Francies is currently experiencing. At only 27\, he’s played with jazz headliners like Pat Metheny\, Chris Potter\, Stefon Harris\, Eric Harland\, and Terrace Martin\, and racked up equally impressive credits in hip-hop and R&B: from shows with Ms. Lauryn Hill\, José James\, Common\, and NAS\, to studio time for Chance the Rapper’s Grammy-winning hit “No Problem”\, Mark Ronson \, Childish Gambino\, YEBBA\, Drake\, and Kodak Black\, to appearances with The Roots on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon alongside his mentor and friend Questlove. \nChris Smith is a bass player\, whose played music professionally for over 25 years. DESCRIPTION:Curtis Lundy an American double bass player\, composer\, producer\, choir director and arranger. Lundy is best known for his work as part of jazz vocalist Betty Carter band.  Over the years\, he has brought some of the most legendary jazz legacies to The Velvet Note\, including Bobby Watson and\, most recently\, Cyrus Chestnut.  This month\, he travels in with pianist Eric Lewis and Terreon Gully. \nPopularly known as ELEW\, jazz pianist Eric Lewis has found cross-over success playing rock and pop music. He is known for his unconventional and physical playing style\, which eschews a piano bench and includes reaching inside the piano lid to pull at the strings directly\, as well as the creation that he calls “Rockjazz”\, a genre that takes the improvisational aspect of jazz and threads it through the eye of the needle of rock. \nHis distinctive style has helped him to amass a large following of celebrity fans\, including Barack and Michelle Obama (for whom he has played at the White House)\, Leonardo DiCaprio\, Donna Karan\, Téa Leoni\, David Duchovny\, Hugh Jackman\, Forest Whitaker\, and Gerard Butler. Throughout his career\, he has performed with musicians such as Sting\, The Roots\, Natalie Cole\, and Esperanza Spalding. In the spring of 2011\, he joined singer-songwriter Josh Groban as the opening act on the American leg of the singer’s Straight to You Tour. \nHailing from East St. Louis\, Illinois\, Terreon Gully has performed with various musicians and genres\, including the Christian McBride Band\, saxophonist Ron Blake\, vibraphonist Stefon Harris\, vocalist Dianne Reeves and Latin band Yerba Buena among numerous others. DESCRIPTION: Mimi Jones \n\nFor more than two decades Mimi Jones has been on the scene\, bassist/vocalist/producer/label owner and now filmmaker Mimi Jones has reigned supreme\, as a side woman to an impressive coterie of musicians and as a leader with three original recording projects on her own Hot Tone Music label. \nBorn Miriam Sullivan in New York City on March 25\, 1972\, and was raised in the Bronx. Jones studied Music at the Manhattan School of Music Conservatory\, and has also studied with Linda McKnight\, Lisle Atkinson\, Barry Harris\, Milt Hinton\, Dr. Billy Taylor\, Yusef Lateef. She has toured extensively for over 30 years throughout the seven continents\, and has played with such people as Frank Ocean\, Kenny Barron\, DD Bridgewater\, Dianne Reeves\, Tia Fuller\, Roy Hargrove\, Terri Lyne Carrington\, Beyonce\, Jason Moran\, Common\, Black Thought and more. \nMimi Jones co-directs a multimedia interdisciplinary production with pianist ArcoIris Sandoval entitled The D.O.M.E. Experience\, creating choreography\, musical and visual works inspired by social injustices and environmental changes in our world. \nVoted #1 & #2 rising star by the DownBeat polls for 3 consecutive years\, she currently works on a new project called The Black Madonna. The Berklee School of Music professor recently began collaborating with a trio called Nite Bjuti featuring Vocalist Candice Hoyes\, and Sound Chemist Val Jeanty.
