SUMMARY:JACQUES SCHWARZ-BART & CARL-HENRI MORISSET
DESCRIPTION:The first form of jazz was called Creole music. It was not only popular in New Orleans but also in Haiti\, Guadeloupe\, Martinique\, and Trinidad. When New Orleans became American\, the connection between musicians from the French post-plantation society began to erode. \nHowever\, the connection between the French Antilles and Haiti never withered. In that tradition\, Guadeloupean jazz musician Jacques Schwarz-Bart has long called upon his Haitian counterparts\, including his musical collaboration with pianist Carl-Henri Morisset. \nMorriset is one of Europe’s premier pianists\, and Schwarz-Bart was voted the best saxophone player in France for 2025. Recently featured together in the group Black Lives\, an all-star group of Black musicians from around the world\, Schwarz-Bart said\, “I released a sax/piano duet album lately\, and I am excited to present this collaboration between Carl-Henri Morisset and myself\, as the symbol of two Caribbean people with one Creole soul.” \nJacques Schwarz-Bart ~ saxophone\nCarl-Henri Morisset ~ piano \nThis is a free but ticketed event. To guarantee your seat\, please pick up your tickets at least 15 minutes prior to the show\, at which point your unclaimed tickets may be used to seat patrons waiting on standby. Tickets will be available for pick-up at the Ticket Office beginning one hour prior to the performance.

SUMMARY:SAMARA JOY
DESCRIPTION:With a style that harkens back to the ‘50s and ’60s eras of jazz music\, the twenty-six year old Samara Joy McLendon is an emerging singer from the Bronx\, New York. Her childhood was filled with soul and Motown classics\, but gospel music was the most dominant due to many of her elder relatives having been involved with the genre. \nThough she performed in the jazz band and won Best Vocalist at the Essentially Ellington Competition & Festival while in high school\, her true introduction to jazz came when she enrolled at Purchase College as a voice major in their jazz program. During her studies\, a video she made with the head of Purchase’s jazz program performing Ella Fitzgerald’s “Take Love Easy” went viral\, and that exciting experience was enough for Samara to create a GoFundMe campaign to cover the expenses in putting together her debut album. \nThe end result\, Samara Joy\, was released two months after her college graduation in 2021. Her second album Linger Awhile arrived on September 16\, 2022\, and has allowed Samara to receive her first of many Grammy Awards thus far: one for Best New Artist and another for Best Jazz Vocal Album. \nTickets: $179.00 ~ $651.00

SUMMARY:PATTI AUSTIN
DESCRIPTION:A Night of Legacy\, Voice\, and Vision. Patti Austin Pays Tribute to Patrick Williams. \nGrammy Award-winning vocalist Patti Austin joins the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and Big Band with Steve Guerra\, conductor\, for a powerful tribute to the late composer\, arranger\, and musical visionary Patrick Williams. This unforgettable evening brings to life Williams’ rich\, genre-defying legacy—music that was\, as lyricist Arthur Hamilton described\, “muscular\, sensuous\, powerful\, and captivatingly rhythmical.” \nKnown for his masterful writing for film\, jazz\, and the concert hall\, Williams received 16 Grammy nominations and a Pulitzer nod for An American Concerto. His music has graced the voices and instruments of legends such as Frank Sinatra\, Eddie Daniels\, and Tom Scott—and\, notably\, Patti Austin. \nAustin\, a revered artist whose career spans jazz\, R&B\, pop\, and the Great American Songbook\, brings her unmatched depth\, honesty\, and elegance to this program. Described by The New York Times as one of the few artists who can authentically channel Ella Fitzgerald\, Austin was a close collaborator of Williams\, recording several of his works including the GRAMMY-nominated “52nd and Broadway” and selections from his Home Suite Home and Sinatraland albums. Her performances offer not only musical brilliance\, but a window into the personal connections that animated Williams’ compositions. \nAudiences will be treated to a two-set concert featuring Williams’ bold orchestral works followed by a dynamic second half of big band music and heartfelt vocal performances by Austin. Central to the program will be selections from her celebrated For Ella album\, bringing Williams’ sophisticated arrangements and Austin’s commanding interpretations of the Great American Songbook to the forefront. \nTickets: $50.00 General Admission | $45.00 Seniors | $15.00 Student \nStream: https://www.youtube.com/live/fyxztdDdmrw

SUMMARY:KIND OF BLUE: CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF MILES DAVIS
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1926\, trumpeter Miles Davis was among the greatest innovators in jazz. This centennial concert celebrates his unparalleled musical legacy\, which includes the albums Sketches of Spain\, Tutu\, Birth of the Cool and Kind of Blue. Trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and saxophonist Ravi Coltrane\, both Grammy Award nominees\, will pay tribute to the magical pairing of Miles Davis and John Coltrane\, \nMiles was the quintessence of cool. A musical icon as well as a cultural one\, Davis took his place in the pantheon by ceaselessly seeking and often ushering in the “next thing” in jazz while steadfastly refusing to be anyone but himself.    \nFinding his footing in the bebop world in the late 1940s and early 50s\, Davis would go on to reinvent his sound many times—to the consternation of many of his followers and the delight of others. To Davis\, what the audience might want never seemed to enter into the equation. Throughout his 65 years on the planet\, he would set his course of discovery\, a renegade in a restless search for new\, uncharted places that the music could take him.   \nFeaturing:\nRavi Coltrane ~ Tenor\, Soprano Saxophone\, Clarinet\nAmbrose Akinmusire ~ Trumpe\nVeronica Swift ~ Vocal\nShelly Berg and the Frost School of Music’s Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra\nConductor ~ Scott Flavin \nTickets: $52.65 – $152.10

SUMMARY:KEVIN BALES
DESCRIPTION:By some measures\, Kevin Bales was a latecomer to jazz\, already 17 when he encountered the sounds and structures and became captivated by the freedom and corresponding challenges of the music. But if late to the party\, he wasted no time in immersing himself in the celebration\, declaring total commitment to what would be his life’s work and backing his announcement by resigning his job and designated career in computer programming. Kevin could commit to jazz with a reasonable degree of expectation. He was already an accomplished pianist\, with classical chops refined since the age of 10. So accomplished he was invited to audition for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra\, then under the direction of its most storied conductor Robert Shaw\, at age 16. \nHe has performed and/or recorded with Wynton Marsalis\, Louie Bellson\, Eddie Daniels\, James Moody\, Ben Tucker\, Ira Sullivan\, Marcus Printup\, Sam Rivers\, Nat Adderley\, Bunky Green\, Nathen Page and Jack Petersen. He counts among his mentors bassist Ben Tucker\, multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan. He has recordings on Blue Note/Capital records. Ten years touring and recording with vocal iconoclast Rene Marie culminated in a Grammy Nominated album. \nCover: $25.00
