He has performed with numerous legends and artists including Redd Foxx\, Stephanie Mills\, Della Reese\, Freda Payne\, Eubie Blake\, The Platters\, Eartha Kitt\, The Duke Ellington Orchestra\, Dorothy Donegan\, The Pointer Sisters\, Ken Peplowski\, Dakota Staton\, Steve Allen\, The Louis Armstrong Legacy Band\, Donna Summer\, Keely Smith\, Maureen McGovern\, Ann Hampton Callaway\, Benny Carter\, and has conducted on the concert stage for John Pizzarelli and Lanie Kazan. He toured worldwide with Cab Calloway for ten years and was drummer for “The David Letterman Show” on NBC. \nFrank has served as the drummer\, assistant conductor & personnel manager for the Palm Beach Pops and is the conductor and featured artist with the Bob Hoose Orchestra.  Familiar to symphony audiences around the world\, Frank Derrick has appeared with the Royal Philharmonic\, the New York Pops\, Pittsburgh Symphony\, Calgary Philharmonic\, and the Buffalo Philharmonic. The Music of Ella Fitzgerald will come to life with performances from the Jazz Legacy Project featuring vocalist Maria Howell\, a film and television star. This collaboration will include essential songs from Fitzgerald’s career and information about her approach to music and life. This will surely be a treat for mothers and everyone in the family. \nMaria’s career started with her singing jazz but her big break in entertainment came from the film adaptation of The Color Purple\, where her church solo\, though overtaken by Shug avery\, definitely stole the show. She muses about the fact that she played a singer. \nCreated in 2015 after an epiphany Justin Varnes had while teaching Jazz History at Georgia State University\, the Jazz Legacy Project has an ongoing residency at the Velvet Note jazz club in Alpharetta\, Georgia where they have been selling out their performances for 6 years and counting. Ditching a traditional textbook in favor of playing records and telling stories about the artists to college kids who knew little or nothing about jazz proved to be a big success. A two time Juno Award winner and 6 time nominee\, she has released 12 self-produced albums on her own label\, Empress Music Group.​Her performing career spans over 24 years in venues ranging from Toronto’s storied Montreal Bistro & Top of the Senator\, to Tokyo’s Cotton Club and more recently concerts with symphony orchestras at Toronto’s Massey Hall and Montreal’s Maison Symphonique. She has performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival on seven occasions including a 2015 performance on the Main Stage with 50\,000 people attending.​Ms. Barlow has led bands featuring the finest musicians in Canada. Her work as a band leader and producer has been recognized with a Juno Award nomination for “Producer of Year” for her recording “Clear Day” (2015) — notable for being only the 2nd Jazz recording nominated in this category. DESCRIPTION:A high-energy spectacle blending American jazz with the sights and sounds of Trinidadian Carnival. A multicultural celebration of life\, freedom\, and history \nThe Anglophone Caribbean is the subject of Etienne Charles’s Carnival: The Sound of a People\, by Trinidad-born\, Juilliard-trained trumpet player and composer Etienne Charles. Charles was fascinated by Jab Molassie (Molasses Devil)\, the blue-colored\, horned\, winged\, pitchfork-carrying\, fire-breathing carnival characters in Trinidad and Tobago – and the people who become them for Carnival. He went to the village of Paramin on Carnival Monday\, to watch them compete – only to dive in and start playing the biscuit tin along with them\, getting himself splattered with blue paint. A scholar of Caribbean music and conservator of traditions who also extends the traditions in everything he does\, Charles explains Carnival: “It’s music. It’s dance. It’s costume. It’s improvisation. It’s history. It’s social commentary\, political commentary. It’s all of that in one word. DESCRIPTION:Michael Franks is an American singer and songwriter\, considered a leader of the quiet storm movement. He has recorded with a variety of well-known artists\, such as Patti Austin\, Art Garfunkel\, Brenda Russell\, Claus Ogerman\, Joe Sample\, and David Sanborn. His songs have been recorded by Gordon Haskell\, Shirley Bassey\, The Carpenters\, Kurt Elling\, Diana Krall\, Patti LaBelle\, Lyle Lovett\, The Manhattan Transfer\, Leo Sidran\, Veronica Nunn\, Carmen McRae\, Ringo Starr and Natalie Cole. \nFranks grew up in southern California with his father Thurman\, his mother Vera\, and two younger sisters. Although no one in his family was a musician\, his parents loved swing music\, and his early influences included Peggy Lee\, Nat King Cole\, Ira Gershwin\, Irving Berlin\, and Johnny Mercer. At age 14 Franks bought his first guitar\, a Japanese Marco Polo for $29.95 with six private lessons included; those lessons were the only music education that he received. \nAt University High in San Diego\, Franks discovered the poetry of Theodore Roethke with his off-rhymes and hidden meter. In high school\, he began singing folk-rock\, accompanying himself on guitar. Studying English at UCLA\, Michael discovered Dave Brubeck\, Patti Page\, Stan Getz\, João Gilberto\, Antonio Carlos Jobim\, and Miles Davis. He never studied music in college or later\, but earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA in comparative literature in 1966 and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Oregon in 1968. He had a teaching assistantship in a Ph.D. program in American literature at the University of Montreal before returning to teach part-time at UCLA. \nDuring this time Franks started writing songs\, starting with the antiwar musical Anthems in E-flat (1968) starring Mark Hamill. He also composed music for the films Cockfighter (1974)\, starring Warren Oates\, and Zandy’s Bride (1974)\, starring Liv Ullmann and Gene Hackman. Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee recorded three of his songs\, including “White Boy Lost in the Blues” on their album Sonny & Brownie. Franks played guitar\, banjo and mandolin on the album and joined them in touring. In 1973\, he recorded an eponymous album\, later reissued as Previously Unavailable\, which included the minor hit “Can’t Seem to Shake This Rock ‘n Roll.” \nIn 1976 Franks released his second album The Art of Tea\, which saw Franks begin a long relationship with Warner Bros. Records. The Art of Tea featured Joe Sample\, Larry Carlton\, and Wilton Felder of the Crusaders and included the hit song “Popsicle Toes”. His third album\, Sleeping Gypsy (1977)\, which includes the song “The Lady Wants to Know”\, was partially recorded in Brazil. Around this time\, percussionist Ray Armando gave Franks a cabasa\, which became a signature instrument for him to play on stage when he was not playing guitar. Burchfield Nines (1978)\, which includes the song “When the Cookie Jar Is Empty\,” reflects his move to New York City and features more of an East Coast sound. Since then\, Franks recorded more than 15 albums. \nHis best known works include “When I Give My Love to You\,” “Popsicle Toes\,” “Monkey See\, Monkey Do\,” “Lotus Blossom\,” “Tiger in the Rain\,” “Rainy Night in Tokyo\,” and “Tell Me All About It.” His biggest hit came in 1983 with “When Sly Calls (Don’t Touch That Phone)” from the album Passionfruit. His teachers include James Bishop\, Fred Hemke\, Jonathon Helton and Griffin Campbell. He has studied jazz with Harold Blanchard\, Don Owens\, Tony Garcia and Michael Koucour. \nRecently\, Perrine has performed the Bolcom Concert Suite with the Volga Band (Saratov\, Russia). Perrine also gave master classes at the Saratov Conservatory and the Rostov On-Don Conservatory and well as at Moscow State University for Culture and Arts where he has been invited back to perform the Ingolf Dahl Saxophone Concerto. \nHe is a founding member of the Red Stick Saxophone Quartet. The quartet has won national prizes in the MTNA and Fischoff chamber music competitions. Perrine’s composition “Vonnegut: Suite for Saxophone Quartet” was premiered at the North American Saxophone Alliance International Convention in Columbia\, South Carolina by the Red Stick Saxophone Quartet. \nHis recordings “Dance of the Pampanzi” and “Here’s the Thing” are available on most streaming services.

DESCRIPTION:Concert On The Lawn presented in collaboration with Jazz At Lincoln Center. \n22-year-old Samara Joy makes her case to join the likes of Sarah\, Ella\, and Billie as the next mononymous jazz singing sensation recorded by the venerable label. Her voice\, rich and velvety yet precociously refined\, has already earned her fans like Anita Baker and Regina King\, appearances on the TODAY Show and millions of likes on TikTok — cementing her status as perhaps the first Gen Z jazz singing star. On Linger Awhile\, Samara will introduce that massive audience to a slew of classic standards several times older than she is through her timeless\, irresistible sound. \nSamara is still relatively new to jazz. Growing up in the Bronx\, it was music of the past — the music of her parent’s childhoods\, as she put it — that she listened to most. She treasures her musical lineage\, which stretches back to her grandparents Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon\, both of whom performed with Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and runs through her father\, who is a singer\, songwriter and producer who toured with gospel artist Andraé Crouch. “Sometimes I catch myself when I’m singing — I’m like\, ‘Whoa\, that was a dad moment’\,” Samara quips. Eventually\, she did follow in the family tradition\, singing in church and then with the jazz band at Fordham High School for the Arts\, with whom she won Best Vocalist at JALC’s Essentially Ellington competition. That led to her enrolling in SUNY Purchase’s jazz studies program\, where she fell deeply in love with the music.

DESCRIPTION:Assembling some of the hottest talent from around the world\, touring/session guitarist (Maynard Ferguson\, NKOTB\, Kenny Loggins) and Emmy nominated film/tv composer Sam Kaufmann formed the Gypsy Jazz and Swing Group – Hot Pants de France. Sam has liberated himself from the Hot Jazz canon and presents his own uninhibited\, modern style with Hot Pants de France and highlights what is still to come. Well received by both listeners and the press\, the vision was to bring a fresh\, contemporary feel to hits from the ’70s\, ’80s and ’90s by arranging them in the style of jazz great Django Reinhardt. The intention was not to simply recapitulate the music\, but to interpret it with a uniqueness\, incorporating modern influences\, while remaining true to the innovative style created by Django and Stéphane Grappelli in Quintette du Hot Club de France\, one of the first all-string jazz bands. \nThe dichotomy between musical styles of the ’40s and the ’90s is bridged by our various vocalists including Lisa Rittner\, and Valeria Koka. Each elegantly bringing the music into the sound of “today”. Lisa honed her chops for a decade on the Queen Mary and the band Sound F/X. In addition to her voice\, Lisa gracefully adds her Saxophone prowess to Hot Pants’ samba-esque version of “Black Hole Sun”. While Valeria is best known for her vocal work with Ukranian Superstar Artem Pivovarov and her own Valeria Koka Sextet. \nHarkening back to the establishing sound of OG – Stéphane Grappelli\, Jane Young (2nd Place International Grand Prix of St. Petersburg\, Swiss Dream Circus\, NBC\, Nova/PBS) constructed excellent counterpoint to Sam’s guitar lines. The two play off each other like a conversation between old friends. \nFinally\, touring/session bassist Jack O’Roonie (Andre Williams\, Danny B Harvey\, Wanda Jackson and Labella Strings endorsee) outlines the harmony while controlling the dynamics and pace of the band with his fantastical yet proficient bass lines. \nYears of experience and effortless interaction are clear – noteworthy on the recordings as well as on stage.
