DESCRIPTION:Composer\, Saxophonist and Educator John Perrine returns to the BOP STOP! He will be presenting original music with his quartet. \nCSU alums Jimmie Parker\, piano | CSU faculty member Chris Vance\, bass | Crystal Burks\, drums \nJohn Perrine\, Professor\, is Coordinator of Jazz Studies and Director of Jazz Ensembles at Cleveland State University. He has premiered works by Kari Juusela\, Aaron Johnson and William Price. Perrine holds a doctorate from Louisiana State University\, a masters from Northwestern University\, and a BME from Stetson University. His teachers include James Bishop\, Fred Hemke\, Jonathon Helton and Griffin Campbell. He has studied jazz with Harold Blanchard\, Don Owens\, Tony Garcia and Michael Koucour. \nRecently\, Perrine has performed the Bolcom Concert Suite with the Volga Band (Saratov\, Russia). Perrine also gave master classes at the Saratov Conservatory and the Rostov On-Don Conservatory and well as at Moscow State University for Culture and Arts where he has been invited back to perform the Ingolf Dahl Saxophone Concerto. \nHe is a founding member of the Red Stick Saxophone Quartet. The quartet has won national prizes in the MTNA and Fischoff chamber music competitions. Perrine’s composition “Vonnegut: Suite for Saxophone Quartet” was premiered at the North American Saxophone Alliance International Convention in Columbia\, South Carolina by the Red Stick Saxophone Quartet. \nHis recordings “Dance of the Pampanzi” and “Here’s the Thing” are available on most streaming services.

DESCRIPTION:Michael Franks is an American singer and songwriter\, considered a leader of the quiet storm movement. He has recorded with a variety of well-known artists\, such as Patti Austin\, Art Garfunkel\, Brenda Russell\, Claus Ogerman\, Joe Sample\, and David Sanborn. His songs have been recorded by Gordon Haskell\, Shirley Bassey\, The Carpenters\, Kurt Elling\, Diana Krall\, Patti LaBelle\, Lyle Lovett\, The Manhattan Transfer\, Leo Sidran\, Veronica Nunn\, Carmen McRae\, Ringo Starr and Natalie Cole. \nFranks grew up in southern California with his father Thurman\, his mother Vera\, and two younger sisters. Although no one in his family was a musician\, his parents loved swing music\, and his early influences included Peggy Lee\, Nat King Cole\, Ira Gershwin\, Irving Berlin\, and Johnny Mercer. At age 14 Franks bought his first guitar\, a Japanese Marco Polo for $29.95 with six private lessons included; those lessons were the only music education that he received. \nAt University High in San Diego\, Franks discovered the poetry of Theodore Roethke with his off-rhymes and hidden meter. In high school\, he began singing folk-rock\, accompanying himself on guitar. Studying English at UCLA\, Michael discovered Dave Brubeck\, Patti Page\, Stan Getz\, João Gilberto\, Antonio Carlos Jobim\, and Miles Davis. He never studied music in college or later\, but earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA in comparative literature in 1966 and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Oregon in 1968. He had a teaching assistantship in a Ph.D. program in American literature at the University of Montreal before returning to teach part-time at UCLA. \nDuring this time Franks started writing songs\, starting with the antiwar musical Anthems in E-flat (1968) starring Mark Hamill. He also composed music for the films Cockfighter (1974)\, starring Warren Oates\, and Zandy’s Bride (1974)\, starring Liv Ullmann and Gene Hackman. Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee recorded three of his songs\, including “White Boy Lost in the Blues” on their album Sonny & Brownie. Franks played guitar\, banjo and mandolin on the album and joined them in touring. In 1973\, he recorded an eponymous album\, later reissued as Previously Unavailable\, which included the minor hit “Can’t Seem to Shake This Rock ‘n Roll.” \nIn 1976 Franks released his second album The Art of Tea\, which saw Franks begin a long relationship with Warner Bros. Records. The Art of Tea featured Joe Sample\, Larry Carlton\, and Wilton Felder of the Crusaders and included the hit song “Popsicle Toes”. His third album\, Sleeping Gypsy (1977)\, which includes the song “The Lady Wants to Know”\, was partially recorded in Brazil. Around this time\, percussionist Ray Armando gave Franks a cabasa\, which became a signature instrument for him to play on stage when he was not playing guitar. Burchfield Nines (1978)\, which includes the song “When the Cookie Jar Is Empty\,” reflects his move to New York City and features more of an East Coast sound. Since then\, Franks recorded more than 15 albums. \nHis best known works include “When I Give My Love to You\,” “Popsicle Toes\,” “Monkey See\, Monkey Do\,” “Lotus Blossom\,” “Tiger in the Rain\,” “Rainy Night in Tokyo\,” and “Tell Me All About It.” His biggest hit came in 1983 with “When Sly Calls (Don’t Touch That Phone)” from the album Passionfruit. A multicultural celebration of life\, freedom\, and history \nThe Anglophone Caribbean is the subject of Etienne Charles’s Carnival: The Sound of a People\, by Trinidad-born\, Juilliard-trained trumpet player and composer Etienne Charles. Charles was fascinated by Jab Molassie (Molasses Devil)\, the blue-colored\, horned\, winged\, pitchfork-carrying\, fire-breathing carnival characters in Trinidad and Tobago – and the people who become them for Carnival. He went to the village of Paramin on Carnival Monday\, to watch them compete – only to dive in and start playing the biscuit tin along with them\, getting himself splattered with blue paint. A scholar of Caribbean music and conservator of traditions who also extends the traditions in everything he does\, Charles explains Carnival: “It’s music. It’s dance. It’s costume. It’s improvisation. It’s history. It’s social commentary\, political commentary. It’s all of that in one word. She muses about the fact that she played a singer. \nCreated in 2015 after an epiphany Justin Varnes had while teaching Jazz History at Georgia State University\, the Jazz Legacy Project has an ongoing residency at the Velvet Note jazz club in Alpharetta\, Georgia where they have been selling out their performances for 6 years and counting. Ditching a traditional textbook in favor of playing records and telling stories about the artists to college kids who knew little or nothing about jazz proved to be a big success. DESCRIPTION:After a 13-year hiatus\, one of the greatest icons of Brazilian music announces his return to the US for a major tour. Four-time Latin GRAMMY winner Djavan will present a brand-new show with his full band\, featuring songs from his twenty-fifth studio album “D”\, as well as major hits from his 45-year career. Aside from new hit songs like “Iluminado” and “Num Mundo de Paz”\, the set list will also include major classics from Djavan’s legendary career\, such as “Se”\, “Flor de Lis”\, ““Eu te Devoro”\, “Samurai” and many others. \nDjavan was born in Maceió\, Alagoas\, Brazil to a white father of Dutch descent and a black mother. He later formed the group Luz\, Som\, Dimensão (LSD – “Light\, Sound\, Dimension”)\, playing Beatles’ material. In 1973\, Djavan moved to Rio de Janeiro and started singing soap opera soundtracks. His first album\, A Voz\, o Violão e a Arte de Djavan\, was recorded in 1976 and included the hit song “Flor de Lis”. Stevie Wonder was a guest on the album Luz. \nIn 1999\, his album Ao Vivo sold 1.2 million copies. In 2016\, he was nominated for the 2016 Latin Grammy Awards in the Record of the Year\, Album of the Year\, Best Portuguese Language Song and Best Singer-Songwriter Album categories. Djavan’s compositions have been recorded by numerous musicians\, including Al Jarreau\, Carmen McRae and The Manhattan Transfer. His album Vesúvio was ranked as the 35th best Brazilian album of 2018 by the Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone magazine.

DESCRIPTION:Rim Sjhots \n\nJeff Hamilton\, Leader/Drummer\nBorn in Richmond\, Indiana\, Jeff Hamilton grew up listening to his parent’s big band records and at the age of eight began playing drums along with Oscar Peterson records. He attended Indiana University and later studied with John Avon Ohlen. Jeff was influenced by Gene Krupa\, Buddy Rich\, Mel Lewis\, “Philly” Joe Jones and Shelly Manne. In 1974\, he got his first big break playing with the New Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He then joined Lionel Hampton’s Band until 1975 when he\, along with bassist John Clayton\, became members of the Monty Alexander Trio. He attained a childhood goal in 1977 when he joined Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd\, with whom he made several recordings. In 1978\, he was offered the position vacated by Shelly Manne in the L.A.4 with Ray Brown\, Bud Shank and Laurindo Almeida. He recorded six records with the L.A.4\, some of which featured his own arrangements and compositions. From 1983 to 1987\, Jeff performed with Ella Fitzgerald\, the Count Basie Orchestra\, Rosemary Clooney and Monty Alexander. Jeff began his association with the Ray Brown Trio in 1988 and left in March 1995 to concentrate on his own trio. From 1999-2001\, the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra was named the in-residence ensemble for the Hollywood Bowl Jazz series. The Los Angeles Jazz Society named Jeff and his musical partner\, John Clayton\, musicians of the year for 2006. Jeff is currently touring with his own Trio\, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and Diana Krall. \nIn addition to his many recordings with Ray Brown\, Jeff has been on nearly 200 recordings with artists such as Natalie Cole\, Diana Krall\, Milt Jackson\, Rosemary Clooney\, Barbara Streisand\, Mel Tormé\, John Pizzarelli\, Benny Carter\, Lalo Schifrin\, George Shearing\, Dr. John\, Clark Terry\, Gene Harris\, Toshiko Akioshi\, Scott Hamilton\, Harry “Sweets” Edison\, Keely Smith\, Bill Holman\, Herb Ellis\, Barney Kessel and Mark Murphy. Jeff is a frequent guest of the WDR Big Band in Cologne\, Germany.
