SUMMARY:CYRILLE AIMÉE QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:Cyrille Aimée grew up in a multilingual household full of music where dancing was an everyday activity\, soundtracked by the Afro-Caribbean sounds of her mother’s native Dominican Republic. The family home was in Samois-sur-Seine\, the location of the Django Reinhardt Festival\, and the teenage Cyrille would climb out of her bedroom window at night to mingle with the players\, igniting a passion for jazz. \nMoving to New York City\, her talents quickly gained her a reputation among her peers as a matchless interpreter of song. She performed and recorded with Roy Hargrove and stole the show in front of the notoriously hard-to-please crowd at the Harlem Apollo. Steven Sondheim invited her to star in a tribute at New York’s City Centre\, backed by Wynton Marsalis. Her 2019 album Move On featured versions of Sondheim’s songs which received praise from Sondheim himself\, and her version of “Marry Me a Little”\, was nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award. \nAt the height of her New York success\, new horizons beckoned. Visiting New Orleans\, she fell in love with the energy and diversity of the city and made it her home. Linking back to New York to connect up all the dots\, she teamed up with producer/multi-instrumentalist Jake Sherman\, and together they have created her latest album\, A Fleur de Peau. to be released on a new label\, the London-based imprint Whirlwind Recordings. \nCombining the depth and sophistication of jazz\, the immediacy of pop\, the irrepressible dance rhythms of the Caribbean\, it’s more intimate and more accessible than anything Cyrille has done before. \nCover: $50.00~$55.00

SUMMARY:DENISE KING & THE DK COLLECTIVE
DESCRIPTION:Native Philadelphia Denise King was thirteen when she was introduced to Jazz by her uncle\, Herbert Tatum\, who had an extensive collection of Jazz LPs. This love was further cultivated by family\, when a cousin Cynthia\, shared her passion for the stylings and energy of Nina Simone. Her “studies” involved hours of listening to the Jazz greats\, both vocalists and instrumentalists. Denise borrowed phrasing styles from Sarah Vaughan\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Nat “King” Cole and Frank Sinatra. She gained an appreciation for lyrics from Lil Jimmy Scott\, Nancy Wilson\, Carmen McCrae and Nina Simone. Listening as intensely to Jazz as she did R&B or music of her era\, she had no idea that her listening sessions were preparing her for a career in music. \nDenise was “discovered” by a friend who heard her singing outside of her home in Philadelphia and introduced her to the world of Jazz performance. After overcoming her terrible stage fright\, Denise went on to share the stage with many legends including Bootsie Barnes\, Christian McBride\, Dexter Wansel\, Duane Eubanks\, Lonnie Plaxico\, Sid Simmons\, Billy Paul\, and many\, many more. \nTickets: $38.95

SUMMARY:KAT EDMONSON
DESCRIPTION:Kat Edmonson is a Songwriters Hall of Fame award-winning songwriter and singer. She has been featured on Austin City Limits\, Tiny Desk Concerts\, A Prairie Home Companion\, and The Tonight Show and has released six studio albums to date. Raised on the music and film of the early-to-mid-twentieth century\, Kat performs original songs and familiar classics in her live show interweaving humorous anecdotes and philosophical musings with disarming candor and vulnerability. “Hearing Edmonson makes it virtually impossible to do anything but stop and listen.” (NPR) \n“Intuitive about melody and handy with a turn of phrase” (The New York Times)\, the songsmith has been writing ever since she was a little girl. JAZZIZ magazine says\, “…her lasting contribution might very well be her songs.” NPR says\, “she’s a savvy student of ’60s film soundtracks\, jazz-pop stylists and Brill Building songcraft\, nodding to her influences at every turn. But her take on those stylized musical languages is so fresh and fluent that the referencing never feels cumbersome.” Her original songs have been featured in major motion pictures\, television shows and commercials including her song “Lucky” which was featured in the Coca-Cola “Footprints” ad from the Winter Olympics. \nFrom Carnegie Hall to the Montreux Jazz Festival to the Blue Note in Japan\, Kat has played major stages across the United States\, Europe\, and Asia. In addition to her own headline tours\, she has performed in support of Lyle Lovett\, Gary Clark\, Jr.\, Smokey Robinson\, and Willie Nelson to name a few. Kat appeared in Woody Allen’s Cafe Society as a 1930s jazz singer and was highlighted on the official soundtrack performing her version of “Mountain Greenery.” In the winter of 2022\, the singer made her theatrical debut in the four-time\, Drama-Desk-Award-nominated off-Broadway show\, “The Hang” by Taylor Mac and Matt Ray. \nMatt Ray ~ piano \nCover: $25.00

SUMMARY:ABNEY EFFECT
DESCRIPTION:Chicago born and raised jazz trumpeter Mario Abney\, now of New Orleans\, fuses traditional and extended trumpet techniques in a most inventive way; his strikingly personal instrumental vision endows the music with an infinite array of tonal color. Recognized for his ability to create pure musical dialog\, and hear music in a universally spiritual way\, he is definitely one of New Orleans most pioneering young jazz musicians. \nMarioʼs first experience hearing jazz was the music of trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. After jazz trumpet peaked his interest in music Mario began to absorb the music of Louis Armstrong\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Miles Davis\, and all the great trumpeters who pioneered the music. \nWith a band scholarship in hand\, Mario attended Central State University\, Ohio\, majoring in Music Education with a minor in jazz studies. “During my college years I became involved in the jazz scene in Dayton playing trumpet in several professional ensembles such as the Afro-Cuban Jazz ensemble\, Babalu\, the Chicago based House of Twang\, The Afro-Rican Ensemble\, SYM\, and several other ensembles. In 2001\, after several years of playing as a side man Abney was inspired to lead his own Quintet. During a performance at the Dayton RiverWalk festival in 2007 Mario became interested in going to New Orleans after hearing the Hot 8 Brass Band perform. By spring of 2008 Abney and two members from his quintet moved to New Orleans to absorb its rich musical culture and become part of the music scene. \nCover: $15.00
