SUMMARY:ELEW
DESCRIPTION:Elew (Eric Lewis) grew up in a household full of pianos and music teachers — both his mother and grandmother taught the entire neighborhood to play. Tinkling keys were the soundtrack of his childhood. \n\nLewis later won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition and went on to play with jazz luminaries such as Ornette Coleman and Wynton Marsalis. He was a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. But in recent years\, he decided to step out on his own and pursue his vision of what he calls “rock-jazz”. \nCover: $ 36.95

SUMMARY:KAT EDMONSON
DESCRIPTION:Kat Edmonson is a Songwriters Hall of Fame award-winning songwriter and singer. She has been featured on Austin City Limits\, Tiny Desk Concerts\, A Prairie Home Companion\, and The Tonight Show and has released six studio albums to date. Raised on the music and film of the early-to-mid-twentieth century\, Kat performs original songs and familiar classics in her live show interweaving humorous anecdotes and philosophical musings with disarming candor and vulnerability. “Hearing Edmonson makes it virtually impossible to do anything but stop and listen.” (NPR) \n“Intuitive about melody and handy with a turn of phrase” (The New York Times)\, the songsmith has been writing ever since she was a little girl. JAZZIZ magazine says\, “…her lasting contribution might very well be her songs.” NPR says\, “she’s a savvy student of ’60s film soundtracks\, jazz-pop stylists and Brill Building songcraft\, nodding to her influences at every turn. But her take on those stylized musical languages is so fresh and fluent that the referencing never feels cumbersome.” Her original songs have been featured in major motion pictures\, television shows and commercials including her song “Lucky” which was featured in the Coca-Cola “Footprints” ad from the Winter Olympics. \nFrom Carnegie Hall to the Montreux Jazz Festival to the Blue Note in Japan\, Kat has played major stages across the United States\, Europe\, and Asia. In addition to her own headline tours\, she has performed in support of Lyle Lovett\, Gary Clark\, Jr.\, Smokey Robinson\, and Willie Nelson to name a few. Kat appeared in Woody Allen’s Cafe Society as a 1930s jazz singer and was highlighted on the official soundtrack performing her version of “Mountain Greenery.” In the winter of 2022\, the singer made her theatrical debut in the four-time\, Drama-Desk-Award-nominated off-Broadway show\, “The Hang” by Taylor Mac and Matt Ray. \nMatt Ray ~ piano \nCover: $25.00

SUMMARY:ABNEY EFFECT
DESCRIPTION:Chicago born and raised jazz trumpeter Mario Abney\, now of New Orleans\, fuses traditional and extended trumpet techniques in a most inventive way; his strikingly personal instrumental vision endows the music with an infinite array of tonal color. Recognized for his ability to create pure musical dialog\, and hear music in a universally spiritual way\, he is definitely one of New Orleans most pioneering young jazz musicians. \nMarioʼs first experience hearing jazz was the music of trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. After jazz trumpet peaked his interest in music Mario began to absorb the music of Louis Armstrong\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Miles Davis\, and all the great trumpeters who pioneered the music. \nWith a band scholarship in hand\, Mario attended Central State University\, Ohio\, majoring in Music Education with a minor in jazz studies. “During my college years I became involved in the jazz scene in Dayton playing trumpet in several professional ensembles such as the Afro-Cuban Jazz ensemble\, Babalu\, the Chicago based House of Twang\, The Afro-Rican Ensemble\, SYM\, and several other ensembles. In 2001\, after several years of playing as a side man Abney was inspired to lead his own Quintet. During a performance at the Dayton RiverWalk festival in 2007 Mario became interested in going to New Orleans after hearing the Hot 8 Brass Band perform. By spring of 2008 Abney and two members from his quintet moved to New Orleans to absorb its rich musical culture and become part of the music scene. \nCover: $15.00

SUMMARY:ALEXIS COLE TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning jazz vocalist Alexis Cole may be the most talented singer to ever hold a top-secret military clearance. A dozen albums into her critically acclaimed career\, she may also be the best-kept secret in jazz\, a status that’s certain to change as more people are discovering her for themselves. \nThe year 2009 was a big one for Alexis: She released her first albums on both Motéma Music and Venus Records… and went to Basic Training to prepare for her new job as a jazz singer for the US Army. \nDuring her seven years in the Army’s Big Band\, Cole had the opportunity to grow as a musician and a person\, sharing the stage with ensembles as diverse as the New York Philharmonic and Kool and the Gang. Alexis continued recording throughout her tour of duty\, releasing a string of well-received albums\, including four titles for Venus\, two for Motema\, and two on Chesky Records. She proved her versatility on everything from jazz standards to Paul Simon’s lesser known compositions\, to Disney love songs to a project on which she teamed up with a fellow serviceman 50 years her senior\, the legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. \nThough Alexis transformed into an insightful interpreter of jazz during her Army years\, understandably\, her personal advancements and achievements had to take a back seat to her military responsibilities. \nCover: $30.00~$94.00 | The latter price is dinner & show \n

SUMMARY:BILL BANFIELD
DESCRIPTION:Jazz guitarist Bill Banfield’s father just turned 100 years old. At a recent celebration\, family and friends gathered virtually and in person to celebrate his life and ask his advice. Bill had been learning his father’s lessons for years\, but a recent phone conversation led his dad to give him the title for his new Mesa/Bluemoon Recordings album. As Bill tells it\, he was speaking with his dad when he suddenly realized that he had something else that he needed to do. His father said\, “Bill\, I will talk to you\, but you must TAKE TIME TO LISTEN.” The words hit Bill like a thunderbolt\, as his album was designed as encouragement to concentrate on the stories found deep in his music. \nBorn and raised in Detroit\, Banfield attended the prestigious arts magnet school\, Cass Tech. He was mentored by two of the city’s finest jazz guitarists\, Kenny Burrell and Earl Klugh. He also learned from the examples of masters George Benson\, John Scofield\, Emily Remler\, Pat Martino\, and Jack Wilkins. Banfield calls his approach “solo-voiced guitar\,” reflecting his belief that imagination and emotion are essential ingredients in all great music\, and that his playing comes directly from his heart. Banfield dedicates Take Time To Listen  to Burrell and Klugh “to lift up these jazz guitar icons who greatly inspired and coached me as an early teen as I aspired to be like my heroes.” \nCover: $20.00

SUMMARY:FROM NEW YORK: NICK HEMPTON QUARTET CD RELEASE
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 2024\, Hempton made one of his regular visits to Vancouver to reunite with his very soulful co-conspirators Jesse Cahill and Nick Peck for a weekend at Frankie’s\, the city’s legendary jazz club. After some cajoling\, Van City tenor legend Cory Weeds agreed to join on stage to form a two-horn quartet. Mics were set up\, favourite tunes were chosen\, cocktails were consumed; and with the Frankie’s crowd in fine fettle\, urging us on with stomps and hollers\, we laid down a set of hard-driving soul jazz. \nIn between shows\, to balance the live feel\, the cats descended into the murky shadows of a grungy basement studio\, the carpeted walls dripping with years of accumulated funk. In keeping with the free blowing feel of the club gig\, the studio session took place live\, with no isolation and no safety net; and in the subterranean twilight the quartet knocked out a set of swingers in a couple of hours\, each tune needing only one or two takes. \nWeeds and Hempton are long-time friends and mutual admirers\, and it was a gas to engage in a little sporting\, good-natured combat\, tipping their hats to the great two-tenor matchups of the past: Dexter Gordon and Herschel Evans\, Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt\, Johnny Griffin and Lockjaw Davis. And while they were wailing\, Peck & Cahill were getting down to serious business\, lighting the fire and keeping it burning until the last note faded. \nCelebrate the release of their new cd Horns Locked! \nThe Band: Nick Hempton~tenor sax\, Cory Weeds~tenor sax\, Nick Peck~organ and Jesse Cahill~drums \nCover: Sold Out | Both Shows

SUMMARY:OSCAR PEÑAS
DESCRIPTION:Catalan- North american guitarist Oscar Peñas uses his unique skills to arrange\, produce\, and perform innovative compositions crossing jazz and classical genres\, using non-traditional instrumentation in either style\, outlining his arrangements and unique sound. Peñas was born in Barcelona\, living in the states since 2005. His family loved traditional\, folk\, and flamenco music. His maternal grandfather was a trumpet player who occasionally played with Xavier Cugat’s orchestra in town. \nPeñas’ first studies were devoted to classical music; he later developed a fascination with jazz and dedicated his career to the American genre. His decision led to this moment in his musical career\, a road that crosses cultures and creative ideas\, the primary genre melded by different grooves. \nPeñas has expanded his focus to incorporate diverse rhythms and styles\, creating extraordinary musical experiences that enrich lives and empower individuals through collaboration\, innovation\, and a passion for artistic excellence. His intuition and ear drive him to an amalgam of melodies that aim for the unexpected and merge multiple music styles that do not cohere into a single signature style. \nAs a performer\, Peñas has released six albums as bandleader\, composer\, and performer; four albums in the USA under his own label Musikoz\, and two in Barcelona\, published by Fresh Sound New Talents. His collaborations with great American Jazz Master include; Grammy winners Esperanza Spalding\, Gil Goldstein\, Paquito D’Rivera\, legendary bassist Ron Carter\, Mike Stern\, and pedal steel guitar Greg Leisz. \nCover: $38.56~$51.00
