SUMMARY:DENISE KING & THE DK COLLECTIVE
DESCRIPTION:Native Philadelphia Denise King was thirteen when she was introduced to Jazz by her uncle\, Herbert Tatum\, who had an extensive collection of Jazz LPs. This love was further cultivated by family\, when a cousin Cynthia\, shared her passion for the stylings and energy of Nina Simone. Her “studies” involved hours of listening to the Jazz greats\, both vocalists and instrumentalists. Denise borrowed phrasing styles from Sarah Vaughan\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Nat “King” Cole and Frank Sinatra. She gained an appreciation for lyrics from Lil Jimmy Scott\, Nancy Wilson\, Carmen McCrae and Nina Simone. Listening as intensely to Jazz as she did R&B or music of her era\, she had no idea that her listening sessions were preparing her for a career in music. \nDenise was “discovered” by a friend who heard her singing outside of her home in Philadelphia and introduced her to the world of Jazz performance. After overcoming her terrible stage fright\, Denise went on to share the stage with many legends including Bootsie Barnes\, Christian McBride\, Dexter Wansel\, Duane Eubanks\, Lonnie Plaxico\, Sid Simmons\, Billy Paul\, and many\, many more. \nTickets: $38.95

SUMMARY:MIKE SINAGRA
DESCRIPTION: Mike Sinagra on vocals and trumpet\, Manuel Fraga on piano and vocals\, Pablo Motta on double bass and Oscar Giunta on drums pay tribute to the Rat Pack\, recreating the eternal classics and the wide repertoire of Frank Sinatra and his hit songs by other great singers such as Sammy Davis Jr.\, Dean Martin\, Nat King Cole\, Louis Armstrong\, Ray Charles\, Charles Aznavour\, Neil Diamond\, Joe Cocker\, Carlos Gardel. \n\nAbout Frank: His repertoire was based on the work of the most important American popular composers\, such as Jimmy Van Heusen\, Cole Porter\, Sammy Cahn and George Gershwin\, and his style synthesized\, already in its origins\, fifteen years of mutual influences between jazz-inspired music and the pop music that was beginning to spread through the radio. Sinatra built his style on the basis of a natural understanding of popular music\, as understood by Bing Crosby\, Fred Astaire\, Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong\, exploiting the idea in all its aspects. \nCover: $13\,000 ARS ($12.22) ~ $15\,000 ARS ($14.10)

Raised on the music and film of the early-to-mid-twentieth century\, Kat performs original songs and familiar classics in her live show interweaving humorous anecdotes and philosophical musings with disarming candor and vulnerability. “Hearing Edmonson makes it virtually impossible to do anything but stop and listen.” (NPR) \n“Intuitive about melody and handy with a turn of phrase” (The New York Times)\, the songsmith has been writing ever since she was a little girl. JAZZIZ magazine says\, “…her lasting contribution might very well be her songs.” NPR says\, “she’s a savvy student of ’60s film soundtracks\, jazz-pop stylists and Brill Building songcraft\, nodding to her influences at every turn. But her take on those stylized musical languages is so fresh and fluent that the referencing never feels cumbersome.” Her original songs have been featured in major motion pictures\, television shows and commercials including her song “Lucky” which was featured in the Coca-Cola “Footprints” ad from the Winter Olympics. \nFrom Carnegie Hall to the Montreux Jazz Festival to the Blue Note in Japan\, Kat has played major stages across the United States\, Europe\, and Asia. In addition to her own headline tours\, she has performed in support of Lyle Lovett\, Gary Clark\, Jr.\, Smokey Robinson\, and Willie Nelson to name a few. Kat appeared in Woody Allen’s Cafe Society as a 1930s jazz singer and was highlighted on the official soundtrack performing her version of “Mountain Greenery.” In the winter of 2022\, the singer made her theatrical debut in the four-time\, Drama-Desk-Award-nominated off-Broadway show\, “The Hang” by Taylor Mac and Matt Ray. \nMatt Ray ~ piano \nCover: $25.00

SUMMARY:ABNEY EFFECT
DESCRIPTION:Chicago born and raised jazz trumpeter Mario Abney\, now of New Orleans\, fuses traditional and extended trumpet techniques in a most inventive way; his strikingly personal instrumental vision endows the music with an infinite array of tonal color. Recognized for his ability to create pure musical dialog\, and hear music in a universally spiritual way\, he is definitely one of New Orleans most pioneering young jazz musicians. \nMarioʼs first experience hearing jazz was the music of trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. After jazz trumpet peaked his interest in music Mario began to absorb the music of Louis Armstrong\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Miles Davis\, and all the great trumpeters who pioneered the music. \nWith a band scholarship in hand\, Mario attended Central State University\, Ohio\, majoring in Music Education with a minor in jazz studies. “During my college years I became involved in the jazz scene in Dayton playing trumpet in several professional ensembles such as the Afro-Cuban Jazz ensemble\, Babalu\, the Chicago based House of Twang\, The Afro-Rican Ensemble\, SYM\, and several other ensembles. In 2001\, after several years of playing as a side man Abney was inspired to lead his own Quintet. During a performance at the Dayton RiverWalk festival in 2007 Mario became interested in going to New Orleans after hearing the Hot 8 Brass Band perform. By spring of 2008 Abney and two members from his quintet moved to New Orleans to absorb its rich musical culture and become part of the music scene. \nCover: $15.00

SUMMARY:ALEXIS COLE TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning jazz vocalist Alexis Cole may be the most talented singer to ever hold a top-secret military clearance. A dozen albums into her critically acclaimed career\, she may also be the best-kept secret in jazz\, a status that’s certain to change as more people are discovering her for themselves. \nThe year 2009 was a big one for Alexis: She released her first albums on both Motéma Music and Venus Records… and went to Basic Training to prepare for her new job as a jazz singer for the US Army. \nDuring her seven years in the Army’s Big Band\, Cole had the opportunity to grow as a musician and a person\, sharing the stage with ensembles as diverse as the New York Philharmonic and Kool and the Gang. Alexis continued recording throughout her tour of duty\, releasing a string of well-received albums\, including four titles for Venus\, two for Motema\, and two on Chesky Records. She proved her versatility on everything from jazz standards to Paul Simon’s lesser known compositions\, to Disney love songs to a project on which she teamed up with a fellow serviceman 50 years her senior\, the legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. \nThough Alexis transformed into an insightful interpreter of jazz during her Army years\, understandably\, her personal advancements and achievements had to take a back seat to her military responsibilities. \nCover: $30.00~$94.00 | The latter price is dinner & show \n
