SUMMARY:JOE ALTERMAN
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta native Joe Alterman expresses a certain upbeat naivete\, with a broad smile and bright eyes that make you feel welcome. One would not guess that this is a man hailed by greats; Ramsey Lewis describes his piano playing as ‘a joy to behold’\, Les McCann states ‘As a man and musician he is already a giant’. Journalist Nat Hentoff championed three of Alterman’s albums\, as well as his writing (Joe wrote liner notes to three Wynton Marsalis/JALC albums\, calling one of Joe’s columns “one of the very best pieces on the essence of jazz\, the spirit of jazz\, that I’ve ever read\, and I’m not exaggerating.” \nA fresh and joyful intent is captured on Joe Alterman’s new release The Upside Of Down. Taken from two live shows at Birdland in November 2019 and February 2020\, the album reminds us of a not-too-distant time when we gathered and danced. Joined by Nathaniel Schroeder on bass and Marlon Patton on drums\, Alterman cruises gently and delightedly through timeless selections from Les McCann\, Oscar Peterson\, Henry Mancini and more\, with some of his compositions in the mix. \nThe Band: Joe Alterman – piano | Dennis Carroll – bass | George Fludas – drums \nCover: $27.75 ~ $37.75

SUMMARY:WYCLIFFE GORDON & ERIC REED
DESCRIPTION:Wycliffe Gordon and Eric Reed are veteran members of the Wynton Marsalis Septet and original members of Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Wycliffe Gordon has had an impressive career touring the world performing hard-swinging straight-ahead jazz\, receiving great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. His unmatched modern mastery of the plunger mute and his exceptional technique and signature sound\, has solidified Gordon a place in musical history known as one of the top trombonists of his generation. \nWhen you think of hard-driving swing\, daring expression\, sophistication and elegance in artistry\, formidable technique and a thunderous sound\, there are only a very small handful of contemporary pianists you think of and one of them is most assuredly Eric Reed. But don’t think of him as just a pianist; Eric is one of his generation’s most advanced thinkers in music.

SUMMARY:JOE ALTERMAN
DESCRIPTION:Joe Alterman began at NYU with a BA and Masters in Jazz Piano\, followed by performances with Houston Person\, Les McCann\, Dick Gregory\, and Ramsey Lewis. Downbeat describes his sound as ‘ rooted in the blues\, and with a touch reminiscent of the great pianists of the 1950s—Red Garland\, Ahmad Jamal\, Bill Evans. It is clear Joe hits all of the necessary points for Jazz critics and fans alike. \nBut there is more to the story\, of course. The twenty-first century has thus far seen yet another transition for this thing called Jazz. In one moment we see the push and pull between tradition and progression\, and in another we see Pop and Hip-Hop musicians emulating and sampling. In Joe Alterman we find none of this struggle; the music just sounds good. Our conscious faculties are instantly disabled as we tap our feet\, feeling the intent and joy of his playing. An old classic is new when you feel good in the moment. \nThe Band: Joe Alterman — piano | Aaron Jacobs — bass | Jim Leslie — drums \nCover: $20.00

SUMMARY:OLATUJA
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed vocalist Alicia Olatuja and bassist Michael Olatuja come together for this groove-heavy mix of Afro-Beat\, jazz\, funk\, and soul\, as heard on their new self-titled album. “A singer with a strong\, lustrous tone and an amiably regal presence onstage” (The New York Times)\, Alicia Olatuja has been held up by no less than Dianne Reeves as one of the finest singers on the scene today. \n\n\nThe St. Louis native first gained national attention as a featured soloist with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at Barack Obama’s 2013 presidential inauguration ceremony. \nBut in the past few years she’s created a powerful buzz in jazz circles through her work with GRAMMY Award-winning pianist/arranger Billy Childs and the late legendary Hammond B-3 organist Dr. Lonnie Smith. Increasingly visible as a bandleader\, Olatuja led three increasingly accomplished sessions including her most recent project celebrating women composers\, Intuition: Songs From the Minds of Women. \nBorn in London and raised in Lagos\, Nigeria\, Michael Olatuja is a first-call bassist on the New York scene who has lent his inventive musicianship to Stevie Wonder\, Terence Blanchard\, José James\, Kurt Elling\, and Shakira. His newest solo release\, Lagos Pepper Soup\, features guests Angelique Kidjo\, Brandee Younger\, Joe Lovano\, and Dianne Reeves\, among others.

SUMMARY:BRANDEE YOUNGER
DESCRIPTION:The sonically innovative harpist\, Brandee Younger\, is revolutionizing harp for the digital era. Over the past fifteen years\, she has worked relentlessly to stretch boundaries and limitations for harpists. In 2022\, she made history by becoming the first black woman to be nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. That same year\, she was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Ever-expanding as an artist\, she has worked with cultural icons including Common\, Lauryn Hill\, John Legend\, and Moses Sumney. Her current album\, Brand New Life\, builds on her already rich oeuvre\, and cements the harp’s place in pop culture. As the title of the album suggests\, Brand New Life is about forging new paths–artistic\, personal\, political\, and spiritual. On this album\, Younger salutes her musical foremother\, the trailblazing harpist Dorothy Ashby\, while also speaking to the sentiments of more recent generations. “We’re bringing new life to Dorothy Ashby’s popular and previously unreleased compositions. We’re creating new life…for the instrument\,” Younger said. Brand New Life is an album about living fully\, in neon bright color.

SUMMARY:RONI BEN-HUR QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:While many of the compositions on Love Letters were written by giants such as Leonard Bernstein (“Lonely Town”)\, Benny Golson (“Fair Weather”)\, and Ben-Hur’s long-time mentor\, the late\, great Barry Harris (“To Dizzy with Love”)\, Ben-Hur once again showcases his formidable composing chops with four original compositions. With the Quartet on Love Letters\, Ben-Hur creates an irresistible atmosphere of musical harmony and loving connection. Each of Ben-Hur’s compositions reflect an aspect of the love that has propelled the guitarist to ever greater heights in the life and in jazz. With “To Dizzy with Love\,” he shares a memory of his friend Barry Harris with a buoyant rendition of a song they once played together at Birdland. In this interpretation we are treated to a joyous dance of swing and Caribbean rhythms. On “Seul `a Paris” (alone in Paris)\, Ben-Hur’s wistful strings and muted trumpet speak of what it is like to fly solo in the “City of Love.” With the composition\, “Waiting for JH”\, co-written with the late American pianist Chris Anderson\, \nBen-Hur sends a “love letter” to the late Jim Harrison\, one of the genre’s most indomitable advocates and promoters\, who worked tirelessly for a “who’s who” in jazz. The voice of the unspeakable is heard in “The House that Yosef Built\,” a love letter to Ben-Hur’s father. The tune evokes a rush of memories about the hardships his parents faced in their escape from Tunisia in the aftermath of World War II.  Guitar\, bass and drum deftly lay a rhythmic foundation\, and Jensen’s triumphant trumpet celebrates the family’s resilience and the sturdy house and home that Yosef Ben-Hur was determined to build for his family.
