SUMMARY:DEE DANIELS QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:Music is not a just-discovered thing for her. She has a firm foundation in the church\, singing in a church choir when she was younger. She was then attracted to the soul-touching and enticing beauty of R&B. \nShe is in tune with the music she sings\, respecting its integrities and demanding that its stories are as clear as intended\, adding her own coolness and spicing to give it her unique personal energy. \nIn her spirit is a love for visual art — she was a high-school art teacher — but music has this almost seductive tug\, and all are forgiven for falling deeply for it as Dee did. Music education is a passion. She inspires students of voice through masterclasses\, workshops\, and scholarship offerings. \nThe words of Mary Kunz of The Buffalo News say a lot about the experience of Dee Daniels’ vocal artistry: “Dee Daniels’ voice brings to mind all the most delirious adjectives: Honeyed. Sweet. Low\, rich\, smooth\, and slow as molasses.” David A. Frye’s words about the singer are precious ones: “The Great American Songbook is in her DNA.” \nTickets: $15.00 ~ $35.00 | Student ~ General

SUMMARY:RONNIE SCOTT'S ALL STARS
DESCRIPTION:It has been named jazz’s greatest year. There was definitely something in the air in 1959\, and it wasn’t just NASA: Castro took over Cuba\, Buddy Holly died in a plane crash\, Pan Am started regular flights around the world\, and NASA sent 7 astronauts into space. \nRonnie Scott’s\, of course\, was founded in 1959. The idea of opening a jazz club along the lines of the intimate and bustling venues of New York’s 52nd Street was hatched by two ardent jazz fans who happened to be very much part of a burgeoning modern jazz movement of the late fifties: tenor saxophonist Ronnie Scott who had since the late forties\, wowed the bebop brigade in a series of bands commencing with the nine-piece which featured his business partner to be and fellow saxophonist Pete King. \nThree greats of jazz died – Lester Young\, Billie Holiday and Sidney Bechet but born out of so much world turmoil were a spate of jazz masterpieces. \nIn March\, Miles Davis created the definitive jazz album in A Kind of Blue. In May\, Charles Mingus released an album called Mingus Ah Um – possibly his definitive album. Also in May\, Ornette Coleman’s album The Shape of Jazz To Come became ‘the genesis of avant-garde jazz’\, and John Coltrane recorded Giant Steps from May to December. \nWhat Miles did for harmonic shifts\, The Dave Brubeck Quartet did for rhythmic innovations with Time Out\, challenging the acceptable 4/4 and 3/4 time signatures and even creating the hit Take Five with their 5/4 time signature. \nHaving spent eight months in the Miles Davis Quintet\, Bill Evans released Portrait in Jazz in December with Paul Motian and Scott LaFaro\, often regarded as one of the greatest jazz trios. \nIn the show\, you can expect to hear a sample of music from all of these genre-defining jazz classics performed by the unmatched Ronnie Scott’s All Stars. \nLine-up \nFreddie Gavita ~ trumpet\nAlex Garnett ~ saxophone\nJames Pearson ~ piano\nSam Burgess ~ bass\nSebastian de Krom ~ drums \nTickets: £35 ~ £55 | $40.96 ~ $64.36

SUMMARY:KEVIN BALES
DESCRIPTION:By some measures\, Kevin Bales was a latecomer to jazz\, already 17 when he encountered the sounds and structures and became captivated by the freedom and corresponding challenges of the music. But if late to the party\, he wasted no time in immersing himself in the celebration\, declaring total commitment to what would be his life’s work and backing his announcement by resigning his job and designated career in computer programming. Kevin could commit to jazz with a reasonable degree of expectation. He was already an accomplished pianist\, with classical chops refined since the age of 10. So accomplished he was invited to audition for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra\, then under the direction of its most storied conductor Robert Shaw\, at age 16. \nHe has performed and/or recorded with Wynton Marsalis\, Louie Bellson\, Eddie Daniels\, James Moody\, Ben Tucker\, Ira Sullivan\, Marcus Printup\, Sam Rivers\, Nat Adderley\, Bunky Green\, Nathen Page and Jack Petersen. He counts among his mentors bassist Ben Tucker\, multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan. He has recordings on Blue Note/Capital records. Ten years touring and recording with vocal iconoclast Rene Marie culminated in a Grammy Nominated album. \nCover: $25.00
