DESCRIPTION:As a part of Miami’s vibrant music scene\, singer/songwriter Leesa Richards grew up in music-rich Detroit and started showing an inclination towards the arts at a very early age. “My parents listened to a lot of jazz and I would record myself over and over singing along to Nancy Wilson records\,” she says. But when she saw Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater\, she knew she wanted to be a dancer. She graduated from University of North Carolina School of the Arts with a degree in dance and began her career on stage performing with a variety of dance companies. \nShe began honing her vocal chops with soul greats Gerald Austin and Peabo Bryson and contemporary soul maverick Dionne Farris. Her first world tour was as a dancer with legendary singer Whitney Houston after which she combined her love for music and dance to earn the role of Mary Magdalene in the national tour of the Broadway musical\, Jesus Christ Superstar\, earning critical acclaim which led to featured performances throughout the US and Europe. \nRenowned jazz trumpeter Jean Caze\, stands as a prominent figure in today’s jazz scene. His magnetic performances have graced stages alongside icons such as Herbie Hancock\, Aretha Franklin\, Mariah Carey\, Al Jarreau\, Roy Hargrove\, Arturo Sandoval\, and George Duke\, among others. Currently serving as the featured soloist for Michael Bublé worldwide\, Jean’s musical journey traces back to his roots in Queens\, NY\, where his passion ignited at the age of nine. By his senior year\, he showcased his talent on national television with “Chicago” on NBC. \nJean’s dedication to his craft earned him scholarships\, accolades\, and widespread recognition\, culminating in a Bachelor’s degree from Manhattan School of Music and a Master’s from Florida International University. DESCRIPTION:Ellington 125 | Duke Ellington Sacred Concert \nCyrus Chestnut is a jazz pianist\, composer and producer. In 2006\, Josh Tyrangiel\, music critic for Time\, wrote: “What makes Chestnut the best jazz pianist of his generation is a willingness to abandon notes and play space. \nIn the late 1980s and early 1990s\, Chestnut worked with Wynton Marsalis\, Terence Blanchard\, Donald Harrison\, and other bandleaders. He joined the band of jazz vocalist Betty Carter in the early 1990s and appeared on her 1992 album It’s Not About the Melody. That same year\, he recorded his first albums as a bandleader\, The Nutman Speaks and Nut. Chesnut has continued to work and record as a bandleader into the 21st century. \nIn 2006\, Telarc released Genuine Chestnut\, his first album for the label. On it he is accompanied by his regular trio of Michael Hawkins\, bass and Neal Smith\, drums. Additional artists on this session include Russell Malone\, guitar and Steven Kroon\, percussion. It includes jazz interpretations of some well-known pop numbers of the past half-century\, including “If”\, the early 1970s soft-rock ballad by Bread. “This song has been with me ever since the sixth grade\,” Chestnut recalled\, “I had to play it for my English teacher’s wedding. I’ve played it in many and various contexts. I actually played it in a Top 40 band when I was just out of school. A lot of time has passed\, but then recently I just started thinking about it again.” Chestnut’s own “Mason–Dixon Line” is one of the album’s high points\, a joyful bebop number.

DESCRIPTION:The trumpeter performed in New York’s loft scene with various groups including the Melodic Art-Tet (Charles Brackeen\, Roger Blank and Ronnie Boykins\, later William Parker). Ahmed Abdullah formed his own band in 1972\, and joined the Sun Ra Arkestra in 1975\, working there on and off until 1993\, when Sun Ra died. He stayed on with the Arkestra after Sun Ra’s demise working under the leadership of John Gilmore and then Marshall Allen. During his time with the Arkestra\, Abdullah participated in more than 25 recordings and traveled extensively with Sun Ra. After leaving the Arkestra\, Abdullah wrote memoirs of his time with that organization. In 2002\, Ahmed began teaching a course on the Music and Philosophy of Sun Ra at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.

DESCRIPTION:NEA Jazz Master and four-time Grammy Award Winner Stanley Clarke has attained “living legend” status during his over 50-year career as a bass virtuoso. He is the first bassist in history who doubles on acoustic and electric bass with equal ferocity and the first jazz-fusion bassist ever to headline tours\, selling out shows worldwide. A veteran of over 40 albums\, he won the 2011 Best Contemporary Jazz Album Grammy Award for The Stanley Clarke Band. Clarke co-founded the seminal fusion group Return to Forever with Chick Corea and Lenny White. In 2012 Return to Forever won a Grammy Award and Latin Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album\, Forever. \nClarke’s creativity has been recognized and rewarded in every way imaginable: gold and platinum records\, Grammy Awards\, Emmy nominations\, virtually every readers and critics poll in existence\, and more. In 2022 Clarke was selected by the National Endowment for the Arts as one of its four new Jazz Master honorees. He also was Rolling Stone’s very first Jazzman of the Year and bassist winner of Playboy’s Music Award for ten straight years. Clarke was honored with Bass Player Magazine’s Lifetime Achievement Award and is a member of Guitar Player Magazine’s “Gallery of Greats.” In 2004 he was featured in Los Angeles Magazine as one of the Top 50 Most Influential People. He was honored with the key to the city of Philadelphia and put his hands in cement as a 1999 inductee into Hollywood’s “Rock Walk” on Sunset Boulevard. In 2011 he was honored with the highly prestigious Miles Davis Award at the Montreal Jazz Festival for his entire body of work. Clarke has won Downbeat Magazine’s Reader’s and Critics Poll for Best Electric Bass Player for many years. In September 2016 he became a part of the permanent collection displayed at the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington DC. \nUnable to tour most of 2020\, Clarke’s Pandemic work has involved developing his web series\, Stanley Clarke’s Bass Nation. The series premiered November 2020. The project is about the dynamics of the music industry\, recording and performing\, and includes Stanley’s conversations with noted musicians\, gear reviews\, play-throughs and performances. \nBorn in Philadelphia\, Clarke has been a constant force of nature in American music since the early 1970s with the success of the jazz-fusion group Return To Forever. That accomplishment gave way to a number of extremely successful solo albums for Clarke. Along the way\, he has collaborated with Quincy Jones\, Stan Getz\, Art Blakey\, Paul McCartney\, Jeff Beck\, Keith Richards\, Aretha Franklin\, Stevie Wonder\, Chaka Khan\, The Police\, Herbie Hancock and many more\, and has shared the stage with Bob Marley and Miles Davis. \nClarke heads his own record label\, Roxboro Entertainment Group.
