She made it look effortless\, even as she was playing the most technically difficult of all the reed instruments… she took my breath away.” Joining her on stage are pianist and Frost School of Music Dean Shelly Berg and clarinetist Mark Nuccio. \nGet your tickets today and prepare to be enraptured by the vibrant rhythms of Brazilian music. \nFeaturing arrangements from students of the Studio Jazz Writing Program\, directed by Steve Guerra.

SUMMARY:CHRISTIAN SANDS
DESCRIPTION:Christian Sands\, jazz pianist and composer was mentored by pianist Billy Taylor\, who allowed the teenager to close one of the sets that Taylor played at the Kennedy Center. Sands went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music. The school’s Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra\, led by Bobby Sanabria\, recorded the album Kenya Revisited Live in 2009; it was nominated for a Latin Grammy. After graduating\, Sands joined Inside Straight\, one of bassist Christian McBride’s bands. In 2014\, Sands cited as influences McBride\, Wynton Marsalis\, Kenny Garrett\, and Marcus Roberts\, because “They’re coming from the tradition of bringing people into the music\, but also moving it forward into new directions”. In the same year\, Sands became an American Pianists Association Jazz Fellowship Awards Finalist. \nHis third album for Mack Avenue Records\, Be Water\, was released in 2020 and received a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Instrumental Composition category for the song “Be Water II.” On his stunning new album\, Be Water\, pianist Christian Sands takes inspiration from water’s tranquility and power and muses on the possibilities offered by echoing its fluidity and malleability. Just embarking on his 30s\, Sands has already enjoyed a remarkable career trajectory\, touring and recording with Christian McBride’s Inside Straight and Trio\, as well as collaborating with the likes of Gregory Porter and Ulysses Owens. \n***Fees Apply To All Tickets

SUMMARY:VANESSA RUBIN
DESCRIPTION:Revered as both a torchbearer and a storyteller\, jazz vocalist Vanessa Rubin possesses a voice hailed for crystalline clarity\, hearth-like warmth and playful lioness sass. The Cleveland native brings a wealth of diverse influences to her vocal performance from both the Trinidadian/Caribbean roots of her mother and traditional jazz by way of her Louisiana-born father. Additional homespun influences include the melodic bell tone clarity of a young Capital Records recording artist\, Nancy Wilson\, the fire of Lambert\, Hendricks & Ross\, the sweet sounds of trumpeter Blue Mitchell as well as her love of the Motown Sound…especially girl groups like the Supremes. \nRubin’s passion for rich musical stories are evidenced throughout her eight albums thus far plus numerous guest appearances. Highlights include the evocative “Voyager II” from the pen of Teri Thornton\, “Inside a Silent Tear” written by Blossom Dearie\, a refashioned waltz version of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” lyricized by New York Voices and an arrangement of “Superwoman” by Stevie Wonder insipired by the Ahmad Jamal recording of “Poinciana”. So while she has one foot planted in tradition – sticking close to timeless melodies and exquisite vocal forms – Rubin waxes adventurous\, embracing stories lesser told while employing lessons of acclaimed storytellers in song such as Carmen McRae\, Shirley Horn and Freddy Cole. \n

SUMMARY:PAQUITO D'RIVERA QUINTET
DESCRIPTION:Paquito D’Rivera is a living monument of Latin jazz. Born in Havana in 1948\, he was introduced to music at an early age by his father\, who is a classical saxophonist but also with a clear passion for listening to jazz. During his studies at the Havana Conservatory of Music he met Chucho Valdés with whom in 1967 he created the Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna. But it was in 1973 that the two laid the foundations for their legend: they founded the group Irakere\, mixing jazz\, rock\, classical and Cuban music. A mix with Western music certainly not too pleasing to the Cuban regime: it was precisely the continuous interference of the communist government that pushed D’Rivera to ask for political asylum from the United States in 1980. \nEven in his new homeland he soon emerged as a beacon of Latin jazz . He collaborates with McCoy Tyner\, George Coleman\, Chick Corea\, Tito Puente\, Astor Piazzolla\, while in his formations he welcomes young musicians\, projecting them towards international fame (Michel Camilo\, Danilo Pérez\, Hilton Ruiz\, Claudio Roditi). In 1989 he joined one of the most amazing Afro-Latin orchestras that have ever graced the stage\, the United Nation Orchestra created by Dizzy Gillespie\, of which he himself became director after Gillespie’s death. \nHe is the only artist who can boast of having won the Grammy Award for both jazz\, Latin and classical music. And D’Rivera has won quite a few awards: the last two at the 2023 Latin Grammys for the best Latin jazz/jazz album ( I Missed You Too!\, with Chucho Valdés) and for the best contemporary classical composition (the Concerto Venezolano \, recorded by trumpeter Pacho Flores.. \nThe Band: \nPaquito D’Rivera: clarinet/saxophone | Jose Rivero: piano | Gaston Joya: double bass | Sebastian Laverde: vibraphone | Mauricio Zottarelli: drums \n  \n***Website requires translation \n
