SUMMARY:CAETANO VELOSO
DESCRIPTION:Blessed with an otherworldly voice and an Ellingtonian understanding of harmonic color\, Veloso co-led the bossa nova and Tropicália movements of the late 1960s and has since taken on everything from funky samba workouts to ethereal balladry and orchestral pieces. His self-titled 1968 LP was a revolutionary statement\, single-handedly launching Tropicália and helping to contemporize Brazilian popular culture in its embrace of international musical influences. Over 40 albums followed that have continued to expand the scope of Brazilian music\, including his celebrated Carnegie Hall collaboration with David Byrne in 2004 and the 2007 rock-informed Nonesuch release Cê that earned two Latin GRAMMY Awards. For this night\, Veloso brings music from 2021’s Meu Coco\, his first album of new music in nearly a decade and his most direct and personal recording to date. \nNow 81\, Caetano Veloso has attained a global stature as a songwriter on par with the likes of John Lennon and Bob Dylan. His influence across musical genres and geographic borders has been vast\, yet his riveting concert appearances remain the most important aspect of a legacy still in progress.

SUMMARY:MADELEINE PEYROUX
DESCRIPTION:ALL PERFORMANCES SOLD OUT \n\nMuch like songbird Edith Piaf\, Madeleine Peyroux spent her teenage years busking the busy streets of Paris. Just like the ‘little sparrow’\, Madeleine befriended the city’s street musicians and made its Latin quarter her first performing stage. Years later\, Peyroux would cite iconic Piaf as an influence on her music and record a rendition of the classic “La Vie En Rose\,” soulfully capturing the tune’s romanticism and melancholy. Her breakthrough album Dreamland (1996) sold a striking 200\,000 copies and Madeleine’s dusky voice was likened to that of jazz greats Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. \nThe album cemented Madeleine Peyroux as a ‘classic’ musical talent that was here to stay\, and the soulful singer found herself touring the world\, singing with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and opening for Cesaria Evora. Extensive touring took its toll on Madeleine’s voice and Jazz’s new star failed to complete recording sessions for her second Atlantic record. Unable to “make money without singing”\, Madeleine made several futile attempts at odd jobs\, and soon “went into hibernation”. \nIn 2003 she signed to Rounder Records and embarked on a game-changing\, lifelong collaboration with multi-Grammy winning producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell\, Walter Becker\, Herbie Hancock). The prolific partnership has now spanned many years and created universally acclaimed albums\, hailed by many as timeless classics including: Careless Love (2004)\, Half the Perfect World (2006)\, Bare Bones (2009)\, her first try at an album of entirely new compositions\, Standing On the Rooftop (2011)\, and The Blue Room\,(2013). \nShe self-produced her next album\, Secular Hymns\, (2016)\, recorded live at a church in Oxfordshire\, England. A collaboration with her touring trio\, guitarist Jon Herington (Steely Dan) and bassist Barak Mori (Avishai Cohen) the album features an eclectic mix of Jazz\, soul\, dub and blues\, with covers of Sister Rosetta Tharpe\, Townes Van Zandt and Willie Dixon. \nIn 2019\, Madeleine released Anthem\, – reflecting on the contemporary political conversation\, Anthem featured all new songs (excepting the title track by Leonard Cohen)\, co-written with Larry Klein\, guitarist and lyricist David Baerwald\, organist Patrick Warren and drummer Brian MacLeod. \nThirty years after her formative busking days Peyroux is the proud curator of nine beguiling albums and an accomplished performer with sell out worldwide tours under her belt. Her atmospheric version of Serge Gainsborough’s La Javanaise was used in the soundtrack of Oscar Winner The Shape of Water and her countless accolades include the coveted BBC “International Artist of The Year” honor. \n

SUMMARY:OMAR SOSA
DESCRIPTION:Quarteto Americanos is Omar Sosa’s first U.S.-based jazz ensemble since the 1990s! The group came together in February 2021 when Omar was in the Bay Area for several live streams. Connecting with Josh and Sheldon was a gratifying reunion for Omar\, as he played extensively with them during his early days in San Francisco and Oakland in the late 1990s. Josh Jones’ Trio at the time\, including Omar and bassist Geoff Brennan\, played frequently at Bay Area clubs. Josh remains one of Omar’s favorite drummers – a versatile musician and educator equally at home in Latin\, jazz\, hip-hop\, and fusion styles. \nSheldon Brown was a member of Omar’s first Septet ensemble in the Bay Area\, performing in San Francisco and Oakland and around the world in support of Omar’s earliest recording projects\, ‘Free Roots’\, ‘Spirit of the Roots’\, and ‘Bembon’\, also known as the Roots Trilogy. Sheldon is a talented composer\, arranger and producer whose first recording\, Shifting Currents\, caught Omar’s ear when he initially moved to San Francisco in 1995. Ernesto Mazar Kindelan is a dynamic Cuban musician who came to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2014 following a ten-year stint with Charanga Habanera\, the celebrated Cuban timba band from Havana. \nOmar’s Quarteto Americanos plays a number of arrangements of Omar’s signature compositions from his early career\, including ‘My Three Notes’\, ‘Angustia’\, and ‘Toridanzón’\, as well as new songs written by Omar in Barcelona during the lockdown in 2020. Like Omar’s oeuvre\, Quarteto Americanos’ repertoire is eclectic and energizing. Its improvisational approach seamlessly fuses elements of jazz\, Latin\, hip-hop\, and electronica into an exciting\, passionate\, contemporary sound. \n

SUMMARY:CYRILLE AIMÉE
DESCRIPTION:Cyrille Aimée grew up in a multilingual household full of music where dancing was an everyday activity\, soundtracked by the Afro-Caribbean sounds of her mother’s native Dominican Republic. The family home was in Samois-sur-Seine\, the location of the Django Reinhardt Festival\, and the teenage Cyrille would climb out of her bedroom window at night to mingle with the players\, igniting a passion for jazz. \nMoving to New York City\, her talents quickly gained her a reputation among her peers as a matchless interpreter of song. She performed and recorded with Roy Hargrove and stole the show in front of the notoriously hard-to-please crowd at the Harlem Apollo. Steven Sondheim invited her to star in a tribute at New York’s City Centre\, backed by Wynton Marsalis. Her 2019 album Move On featured versions of Sondheim’s songs which received praise from Sondheim himself\, and her version of “Marry Me a Little“\, was nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award. \nAt the height of her New York success\, new horizons beckoned. Visiting New Orleans\, she fell in love with the energy and diversity of the city and made it her home. Linking back to New York to connect up all the dots\, she teamed up with producer/multi-instrumentalist Jake Sherman\, and together they have created her latest album\, A Fleur de Peau. to be released on a new label\, the London-based imprint Whirlwind Recordings \nCombining the depth and sophistication of jazz\, the immediacy of pop\, the irrepressible dance rhythms of the Caribbean\, it’s more intimate and more accessible than anything Cyrille has done before.

Grammy nominations for the Smoke Sessions albums The Intangible Between and Presence\, by Evans’ raucous\, risk-friendly Captain Black Big Band\, stamp his bona fides as a bandleader and composer. \nIn addition to CBBB\, Evans’ multifarious leader and collaborative projects include the Eubanks Evans Experience (a duo with eminent guitarist Kevin Eubanks); the Brazilian unit Terreno Comum; Evans’ working trio with bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Mark Whitfield\, Jr.; and Tar Baby (a collective trio of 20 years standing with bassist Eric Revis and drummer Nasheet Waits). One of Tar Baby’s two 2022 releases will be released on Evans’ imprint\, Imani Records\, which he founded in 2001 and relaunched in 2018. \n

Dedicated to the further development of his skills\, the younger Jones spent the next few years working diligently with acclaimed drummers and music instructors and began performing with distinguished musicians by the time he was in his teens. He completed his academic training after receiving a full scholarship to the California Institute of the Arts where he studied under the tutelage of the legendary Albert “Tootie” Heath. Before he was a semifinalist in the 1992 Thelonious Monk Jazz Drum Competition\, Jones co-founded jazz band Black Note. Influenced by the rich soulful energy of the West Coast bop movement\, Black Note’s hard-swing sound propelled them to first place in the prestigious John Coltrane Young Artist Competition in 1991. \nNear the end of 1994\, while Jones was reaching for a higher level of drumming dexterity\, he gained the privilege of playing sideman to the renowned vibist Milt Jackson\, where Jones learned the importance of pacing and sensitivity. Meanwhile\, his musical career continued to unfold. \nFrom 1998-2005\, Jones was a member of Roy Hargrove’s Quintet and is featured on Roy Hargrove’s CD releases on Verve: Moment To Moment\, Hard Groove\, Nothing Serious and RH Factor’s Distractions. Jones can be heard on a host of recordings including Kurt Elling’s GRAMMY® nominated Night Moves (Concord) and Eric Reed’s Here (Max Jazz). Jones has worked with Sonny Rollins\, Ernestine Anderson\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Wynton Marsalis\, Cedar Walton\, Frank Wess\, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band\, Houston Person\, Billy Childs\, Eric Reed\, Ryan Kisor\, Eric Alexander\, Bill Charlap\, Michael Brecker\, Herbie Hancock and Hank Jones. \nHouston Person: \nHouston Person\, born in Newberry\, South Carolina in 1934\, is the natural heir to the Boss Tenor crown worn so long and so well by Gene Ammons. In the more than twenty-five years that he has been a working bandleader\, Person has taken his music to most points on the globe. A travelling Jazzman in an era that has found that particular species a veritable rara avis\, Person does it all himself. He books his own tours\, hunts up the new clubs\, has the phone number of every major concert promoter on each continent and produces his own albums: truly the vertically integrated Jazzman. \nIf\, given all this\, he played mediocre tenor it would be easy to forgive him. But he doesn’t – he plays damn good tenor and it keeps getting better. One of the last proponents of the big sound\, his tone has gotten bigger even as his delivery has mellowed and rounded out. And\, of course\, with Person you are likely to hear almost anything in terms of repertoire. He has recorded disco and gospel\, pop and r&b in addition to his natural Jazz but beyond that he has an enormous and ever changing book. Nothing pedestrian or everyday for Person! \nHe grew up in Florence\, S.C.\, studied at the state college there\, was later named to the school’s Hall of Fame in 1999\, and continued his studies at Hartt College of Music in Hartford\, CT. Earlier\, in the U.S. Air Force\, he played with Don Ellis\, Eddie Harris\, Cedar Walton\, and Leo Wright. Contrary to popular belief\, he was never married to the late singer Etta Jones\, but did spend many years as her musical partner\, recording\, performing and touring. \nAlthough he has performed in the hard bop and swing genres\, he is most experienced in and best known for his work in soul Jazz. Person is also known for his distinctive sassy sound and his expressive style of playing. He received the Eubie Blake Jazz Award in 1982. \nHe has more than 75 albums under his own name on Prestige\, Westbound\, Mercury\, Savoy\, Muse\, and is currently with High Note Records. He has recorded with Charles Brown\, Charles Earland\, Lena Horne\, Etta Jones\, Lou Rawls\, Horace Silver\, Dakota Staton\, and more. \nHouston has deffine ideas about Jazz: “Well\, it’s uplifting and important. And a release and a relief. That’s what it is\, Jazz\, so called Jazz\, to me. It’s important that it’s relaxing. Something that when the end of the day comes\, after a hard and frustrating day out in the world\, that relieves you. Relaxes you and makes you feel good.” Person adds that all he wants is to give people “good solid melodies with some improvisation and plenty of blues feel.” He smiles\, “You always want that dance feeling there\, that happy\, happy feeling.”

SUMMARY:KEYON HARROLD
DESCRIPTION:Keyon Harrold\, a world-class jazzman\, returns to Warsaw at Jassmine and will feature his new album Foreverland. It is full of emotion and drama\, a triumphant journey that takes the listener through good\, bad\, ugly and beautiful experiences\, leading to wisdom. Harrold says: What I can offer as a musician playing an instrument is an honest communication of emotion. \nWe had the opportunity to hear Harrold’s trumpet on two Grammy Award-winning albums – the soundtrack to the film “Miles Ahead” and “Take Me to the Alley” by Gregory Porter. In the Jazz Times readers’ vote for the best newcomer of 2015\, Keyon took second place. Wynton Marsalis himself called him “the future of the trumpet”. The work of the star of the Jassmine concert is the result of jazz traditions\, the spirit of soul and R&B music\, and hip-hop energy and authenticity. Keyon Harrold doesn’t care about genre labels. \nTickets In Dollars: $51.61
