SUMMARY:THE COOKERS
DESCRIPTION:The Cookers take their name from Night of the Cookers\, the famous 1965 recorded trumpet summit between Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard at Brooklyn’s Club La Marchal. Formed by trumpeter and organizer David Weiss\, the group brings together some of the most storied musicians in jazz\, players who came up in the 1960s and 70s working alongside the very architects of the music. \nDrummer Billy Hart and trumpeter Eddie Henderson were both members of Herbie Hancock’s groundbreaking Mwandishi group. Bassist Cecil McBee anchored Charles Lloyd’s celebrated quartet alongside Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. Pianist George Cables held the piano chair in bands led by Sonny Rollins\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Dexter Gordon\, and Art Pepper. Saxophonist Donald Harrison\, a recently named NEA Jazz Master\, came up performing with Art Blakey\, Roy Haynes\, and Herbie Hancock. \nTogether these musicians have contributed to well over a thousand recordings across the history of jazz\, and the chemistry between them\, forged over decades of shared history on bandstands around the world\, is unmistakable. Critics have praised The Cookers for embodying the serious commitment it took to thrive on the New York jazz scene of decades past\, and audiences consistently describe their live performances as electrifying\, a rare opportunity to witness musicians who don’t simply play the music\, but live inside of it. This is a true once in a lifetime chance to experience some of the last living architects of modern jazz in an intimate room. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. Tickets are reserved seating. Guests dining at the Old Lyme Inn prior to the show receive 10% off their dinner bill. \nThe Band:\nEddie Henderson – Trumpet\nDavid Weiss – Trumpet\nDonald Harrison – Alto Saxophone\nAzar Lawrence – Tenor Saxophone\nGeorge Cables – Piano\nCecil McBee – Bass\nBilly Hart – Drums \nCover: $38.57

SUMMARY:MIKE STERN BAND
DESCRIPTION:Mike Stern is one of the true guitar greats of his generation. There\, he plays with remarkable facility\, and his searing lines draw mainly on bebop and the blues. Additionally\, he carries a rock-tinged intensity. He uniquely combines the finesse and lyricism of Jim Hall\, the driving swing of Wes Montgomery and the turbulent\, overdriven attack of Jimi Hendrix. \nStern made his mark with Miles Davis in the early ‘80s before launching his solo career in 1985. Since then\, he has released seventeen recordings as a leader\, six of which received Grammy nominations. Moreover\, his latest recording\, 2024’s Echoes and Other Songs\, features an all-star cast. \nMusicians\, critics and fans hail drummer Dennis Chambers for his technique and speed. Furthermore\, they particularly praise his ability to play “in the pocket”. Thus\, he has worked with John Scofield\, George Duke\, Brecker Brothers\, Steely Dan\, Santana\, Parliament/Funkadelic\, John McLaughlin\, and more. \nBassist Noam Tanzer moves among a diverse world of styles. There\, these vary from improvised music to hardcore metal\, from indie rock in Spanish to the music of Billy Strayhorn. Noam has worked with Paquito D’Rivera\, Miguel Zenon\, Julieta Rada and others. \nRegarded as the First Lady of jazz guitar\, Leni Stern has become a respected force on the global music scene. Also\, she has led her own groups for over three decades. Additionally\, Guitar Player once described her work as “a case study in the interactive properties of composition and improvisation.” \nSaxophonist Bob Franceschini ranks among the most in-demand players in New York. There\, he has worked with George Benson\, Eddie Palmieri\, Woody Shaw\, Kenny Kirkland\, Chris Botti\, Chaka Khan and many others. \nCover: $41.95 ~ $47.10

SUMMARY:BRANFORD MARSALIS & DIANNE REEVES
DESCRIPTION:Saxophone great and NEA Jazz Master Branford Marsalis and his superlative quartet are joined by fellow NEA Jazz Master and jazz’s greatest vocalist\, Dianne Reeves\, for a week devoted to the immortal music of John Coltrane\, in honor of the centennial of his birth. \nSaxophonist Branford Marsalis is one of the most influential and revered figures in contemporary music. The NEA Jazz master\, three-time Grammy Award winner\, and Tony and EMMY Award nominee is equally at home performing concertos with symphony orchestras and sitting in with members of the Grateful Dead\, but the core of his musical universe remains the Branford Marsalis Quartet. After more than three decades of existence with minimal personnel changes\, this celebrated ensemble is revered for its uncompromising interpretation of a kaleidoscopic range of both original compositions and jazz and popular classics. \nThe Branford Marsalis Quartet and Dianne Reeves will release a tribute album which revisits Coltrane’s seminal 1963 collaboration with Johnny Hartman. Originally recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in March of 1963\, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman was a sublime showcase for Coltrane\, McCoy Tyner\, Jimmy Garrison\, and Elvin Jones\, who gave remarkable depth and sensitivity to a selection of standards including Irving Berlin’s “They Say It’s Wonderful\,” Guy Wood’s “My One and Only Love\,” and the definitive version of Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life.” Bringing the songs to life was the distinctive\, evocative baritone of crooner Johnny Hartman\, who was the only vocalist Coltrane ever collaborated with. \nInterpreting the songs with her own singular gifts\, Reeves is a five-time GRAMMY winner who is accurately called “The most admired jazz diva since the heyday of Sarah Vaughan\, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday” (NY Times). She is an artist who embodies the music’s enduring values of elegance\, class\, and improvisational poise\, with an innate feel for swing. \nPersonnel:\nBranford Marsalis ~ tenor saxophone\nDianne Reeves ~ vocals\nJoey Calderazzo ~ piano\nEric Revis ~ bass\nJustin Faulkner ~ drums \nTickets: $50.00 ~ $165.00 \nThursday: Sold Out | Friday: Tickets Available | Saturday: Almost Sold Out | Sunday: Tickets Available \nShowtimes: Thursday ~ Saturday @ 7:30pm | Sunday: 3:00pm

SUMMARY:ANTONIO HART QUINTET
DESCRIPTION:When Antonio Hart was in ninth grade\, the music and art programs were cut out of the public schools. Antonio was devastated because the one thing that made school interesting was taken away from him. Having a friend that attended the then new Baltimore School for the Performing Arts\, somehow got Antonio an audition. He did the best he could because he really could not read the level of music he was trying to play. He prayed everyday\, but he did not think he would get in. One week to the day\, he received a transfer letter in the mail; he had been accepted! Hart considers this the beginning of his life as a young man and musician. \nHart’s real study of Jazz began at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There\, he studied with Bill Pierce\, Andy McGhee\, and Joe Viola. The three teachers gave him the foundation he needed to develop into a professional musician. Hart spent many hours in the library listening to all his favorite musicians\, and practicing and playing as much as he could. There were also many late hours in the practice room. Because of the lessons learned at the School for the Arts\, he really thought it was important to have a balance between music and academia\, so in his sophomore year he became a Music Education Major. The most important friendship at Berklee was with Roy Hargrove. They spent three years touring the world and recording Hargrove’s first three records. Hart considers Hargrove to be his brother in life and music. He even used Hargrove on his first recording ‘For the First Time.’ \nHis 1997 release\, ‘Here I Stand’ Impulse records\, earned Hart a 1997 Grammy nomination for ‘Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.’ He has also been in much demand as a guest on over 80 recordings. Since then\, Hart has recorded seven CDs as a leader. Hart balances his time as a full-time Professor at The Aaron Copland school of Music\, Queens College\, as well as\, traveling on the road with his band\, The Dave Holland Big band\, and The Dizzy Gillespie Big band. \nThe Quintet\nAntonio Hart ~ Alto Sax\nMejedi Owusu ~ Trumpet\nRichard Johnson ~ Piano\nAlex “Apolo” Ayala ~ Bass\nJerome Jennings ~ Drums \nCover: $40.00

SUMMARY:RAVI COLTRANE
DESCRIPTION:Just days before John Coltrane would have turned 100 his oldest surviving son\, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane\, presents a blazing young band to mark the milestone. \nWhile Ravi spent the first quarter century of his career focusing on acquiring a diverse array of experience as a sideman and then honing his own lustrous\, harmonically ambiguous compositions\, he’s taken up the family mantle in recent years. With a variety of ensembles\, projects and initiatives on and off the bandstand\, he’s championed the legacy of his parents (including with his 2025 stint as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director). \nFor this celebration he performs with trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson\, a longtime collaborator who graduated from Berkeley High and spent years touring and recording with alto sax great and MBASE conceptualist Steve Coleman. A teenage prodigy\, Israeli pianist/keyboardist Gadi Lehavi made his Village Vanguard debut with Ravi at 15. Now 30\, he’s more than lived up to his enormous potential\, playing with consummate technique and capacious imagination. Powering the quartet is Bay Area-reared drum sensation Elé Howell\, 28\, a supremely musical accompanist who gained national attention when Coltrane started hiring him in 2021 for various projects\, including Cosmic Music: Revisiting the Music of John and Alice Coltrane. Though John Coltrane ascended in 1967 at the age of 40\, his presence continues to illuminate new directors for exploration. \nTickets: $60.00 ~ $95.00

SUMMARY:LIZZ WRIGHT WITH KENNY BANKS SR.
DESCRIPTION:With one of the most spellbinding voices of her generation\, Lizz Wright has spent more than two decades creating music that moves effortlessly through jazz\, gospel\, blues\, R&B and the deep traditions of the Black American church. \nAt the heart of that journey has been pianist Kenny Banks Sr.\, one of Wright’s earliest mentors and most trusted collaborators. Their musical connection began more than 25 years ago in Atlanta\, when Wright first heard Banks perform and knew immediately she wanted to make music with him. What followed was a remarkable creative partnership spanning Wright’s acclaimed career\, from her 2003 debut Salt through The Orchard\, Fellowship\, Freedom & Surrender\, Grace and Shadow. \nTheir new album\, Nearness\, brings that relationship into its most intimate setting yet: just Wright’s extraordinary voice and Banks on piano and organ. Together\, they revisit jazz standards and spirituals including “The Nearness of You\,” “All the Things You Are\,” “Amazing Grace\,” “Deep River” and “How I Got Over\,” alongside two originals. \nThe result is both beautifully spare and deeply powerful: a celebration of friendship\, mentorship\, shared musical history and what Wright calls “a great platonic love.” After a quarter-century of making music together\, Nearness captures two extraordinary artists listening\, responding and trusting one another completely. \nCover: $57.60 ~ $60.00

SUMMARY:DAVE POTTER
DESCRIPTION:“Pianist Marcus Roberts calls Dave Potter “one of the most talented young drummers on the scene today\,” and the word that best sums up his playing is intensity. Potter got a late start\, picking up the drum set in high school in Durham\, North Carolina\, where he was drawn to funk and fusion drummers like Billy Cobham and Dennis Chambers. Hearing Tony Williams’s early recordings with the Miles Davis Quintet changed everything\, and with mentorship from trumpeter and educator Dr. Andrew Sioberg\, he threw himself into practicing\, listening\, and transcribing. \nThat work earned him a scholarship to Florida State University\, where he studied with Roberts and began a collaboration with Jason Marsalis that has lasted more than twenty years. After graduating\, he was selected for the Louis Armstrong Quintet at the University of New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina cut that plan short. He later turned down a full scholarship to Juilliard to return to Florida State for his master’s degree under Roberts. \nPotter was featured in the 2010 book The New Face of Jazz\, which profiled the younger generation making an impact on the scene. Now based in Atlanta\, he keeps a busy teaching and performing schedule and tours with the Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet\, Greg Tardy\, Eric Reed\, and Marcus Roberts. He also leads his own group\, Retro Groove\, whose third studio album builds on their self-titled debut with clever arrangements of ’80s hits by Whitney Houston\, Rush\, The Isley Brothers\, Toto\, and others\, blended with swing and blues to win over jazz purists and pop fans alike. \nDave Potter: Band Leader & Drums\nRod Harris\, Jr.: Guitar\nGary Motley: Piano\nTommy Sauter: Bass \nCover: $25.00

SUMMARY:RUSSELL GUNN + BLACKHAWK
DESCRIPTION:Two-time GRAMMY-nominated trumpeter\, composer\, arranger and producer Russell Gunn returns to this intimate room with one of his most ambitious statements yet: his album release weekend of Afrikan-Amerikan Book of the Dead: The Book of Going Forth By Any Means Necessary\, a provocative seven-song work that draws inspiration from the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead and reimagines the idea of a spiritual guide through the history\, identity\, resilience and forward movement of Black Americans. Featuring six original Gunn compositions and a Duke Ellington classic\, the project brings together the fearless musical language that has defined Gunn’s career—jazz steeped in the Black musical continuum\, alive with gospel\, funk\, hip-hop\, groove and uncompromising improvisation. \nThe album also introduces Blackhawk\, Gunn’s hand-selected ensemble whose name pays tribute to Miles Davis’ legendary In Person Friday and Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk\, the recording Gunn credits with profoundly shaping his understanding of how jazz should feel. At its heart\, however\, Afrikan-Amerikan Book of the Dead is not a meditation on death\, but an affirmation of life: music concerned with knowing who you are\, understanding what came before you and moving forward with purpose\, pride and possibility. \nCover: $59.00
