SUMMARY:ANTONIO HART QUINTET
DESCRIPTION:When Antonio Hart was in ninth grade\, the music and art programs were cut out of the public schools. Antonio was devastated because the one thing that made school interesting was taken away from him. Having a friend that attended the then new Baltimore School for the Performing Arts\, somehow got Antonio an audition. He did the best he could because he really could not read the level of music he was trying to play. He prayed everyday\, but he did not think he would get in. One week to the day\, he received a transfer letter in the mail; he had been accepted! Hart considers this the beginning of his life as a young man and musician. \nHart’s real study of Jazz began at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There\, he studied with Bill Pierce\, Andy McGhee\, and Joe Viola. The three teachers gave him the foundation he needed to develop into a professional musician. Hart spent many hours in the library listening to all his favorite musicians\, and practicing and playing as much as he could. There were also many late hours in the practice room. Because of the lessons learned at the School for the Arts\, he really thought it was important to have a balance between music and academia\, so in his sophomore year he became a Music Education Major. The most important friendship at Berklee was with Roy Hargrove. They spent three years touring the world and recording Hargrove’s first three records. Hart considers Hargrove to be his brother in life and music. He even used Hargrove on his first recording ‘For the First Time.’ \nHis 1997 release\, ‘Here I Stand’ Impulse records\, earned Hart a 1997 Grammy nomination for ‘Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.’ He has also been in much demand as a guest on over 80 recordings. Since then\, Hart has recorded seven CDs as a leader. DESCRIPTION:Just days before John Coltrane would have turned 100 his oldest surviving son\, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane\, presents a blazing young band to mark the milestone. \nWhile Ravi spent the first quarter century of his career focusing on acquiring a diverse array of experience as a sideman and then honing his own lustrous\, harmonically ambiguous compositions\, he’s taken up the family mantle in recent years. With a variety of ensembles\, projects and initiatives on and off the bandstand\, he’s championed the legacy of his parents (including with his 2025 stint as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director). \nFor this celebration he performs with trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson\, a longtime collaborator who graduated from Berkeley High and spent years touring and recording with alto sax great and MBASE conceptualist Steve Coleman. A teenage prodigy\, Israeli pianist/keyboardist Gadi Lehavi made his Village Vanguard debut with Ravi at 15. Now 30\, he’s more than lived up to his enormous potential\, playing with consummate technique and capacious imagination. Powering the quartet is Bay Area-reared drum sensation Elé Howell\, 28\, a supremely musical accompanist who gained national attention when Coltrane started hiring him in 2021 for various projects\, including Cosmic Music: Revisiting the Music of John and Alice Coltrane. SUMMARY:BILL CHARLAP TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Bill Charlap was born in New York City into a deeply musical family\, his father was Broadway composer Moose Charlap\, whose credits include Peter Pan\, and his mother is singer Sandy Stewart\, a Grammy nominated vocalist who toured with Benny Goodman. Charlap began playing piano at age three and never looked back. In the late 1980s he joined Gerry Mulligan’s quintet\, and in 1995 secured one of the most coveted piano chairs in jazz with the Phil Woods Quintet. Since then he has performed with an extraordinary range of the music’s leading artists\, including Tony Bennett\, Wynton Marsalis\, Ron Carter\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Houston Person\, and Barbra Streisand. \nCharlap is widely regarded as one of the most gifted interpreters of the American songbook working today. Time magazine has written that he “approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved\, no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is\, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.” His acclaimed trio\, celebrated for its telepathic interplay and deep swing\, has been together for decades and has released nearly 20 albums together. In 2016\, his collaboration with Tony Bennett\, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern\, won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. From 2004 through 2023 he served as Artistic Director of New York City’s Jazz in July Festival at 92NY\, and he currently serves as Director of Jazz Studies at William Paterson University. \nJoining him for this special four night engagement are bassist David Wong and drummer Dennis Mackrel\, two of the most respected rhythm section players in jazz. DESCRIPTION:Over the past three decades\, 11-time Grammy Award winner Christian McBride has fronted ensembles that span and synthesize straight-ahead and experimental jazz\, funk\, soul\, Latin\, hip-hop and rhythm and blues. His celebrated groups include Inside Straight\, Christian McBride Big Band\, Ursa Major\, Christian McBride’s New Jawn\, The Christian McBride Trio and A Christian McBride Situation. \nSeveral of those paths converged on Without Further Ado\, Vol. 1\, the Christian McBride Big Band’s 2025 album\, which won the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble. For the first time\, the 17-piece band shared the spotlight with a host of guest vocalists\, including Sting\, Samara Joy\, Dianne Reeves\, Cécile McLorin Salvant\, Jeffrey Osborne and Antoinette Henry.
