SUMMARY:DANIELLE WERTZ
DESCRIPTION:“A masterful ballad interpreter” (NYC Jazz Record)\, the sublime vocalist and 2015 Thelonious Monk competition finalist performs music from her newest Outside in Music album\, Other Side. An artist on the rise\, the New York City-based singer and composer weaves together elements of jazz\, folk\, and the use of her voice as an instrumental texture to create an intimate and personal musical world. \n\n\nA finalist in both the Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Vocal Competition\, Wertz released her 2017 debut album Intertwined in collaboration with Israeli pianist Tal Cohen — a sparkling collection of standards and newer compositions which was ranked #4 on Capital Bop‘s list of “Best DC Jazz Albums of 2017.” In addition to her solo career\, Wertz is an avid collaborator\, featured on recording projects alongside Elena Pinderhughes\, Braxton Cook\, Justin Rock\, and Ambrose Akinmusire\, among others. \nWith Other Side\, Wertz has made a quantum leap as a composer and conceptualist\, braving essential questions of the human experience with nuanced expression and deep feeling. Born of the introspection and examination that the pandemic forced upon us all\, the album pairs her own lyrical compositions based in personal stories with carefully chosen covers like the Rogers and Hart chestnut “Spring is Here\,” imbued with the longing and anger created by a world in lockdown.

SUMMARY:CHUCHO VALDÉS & IRAKERE 50
DESCRIPTION:The most influential figure in modern Afro-Cuban jazz for more than half a century\, virtuoso pianist\, composer and arranger Chucho Valdés returns with Irakere 50\, the new iteration of the legendary band that changed the course of Latin music in the 1970s and 80s. \n\n\nThe son of Cuban pianist Bebo Valdés\, the winner of seven GRAMMYs and four Latin GRAMMY Awards joined Armando Romeu’s celebrated Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music in 1967\, a time when the communist government still considered American jazz anti-revolutionary. He was already recognized as the most formidable pianist of his generation when he launched Irakere in 1973 with a phenomenal cast that included saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. \nDiscovered and introduced internationally by Dizzy Gillespie\, the band’s unprecedented synthesis of folkloric Afro-Cuban rhythms\, sacred drums\, rock\, funk\, R&B\, and jazz opened up vast new frontiers\, and helped pave the way for the pervasively popular dance music known as timba. Over the ensuing years\, Valdés has concentrated on his career as a solo artist\, recording 25 albums and co-writing the landmark 2018 book Decoding Afro-Cuban Jazz in collaboration with SFJAZZ Director of Education Rebeca Mauleón. \nA springboard from Valdes’ GRAMMY-winning Afro-Cuban Messengers band\, Irakare 50 showcases a blazing new generation of Cuban talent. \nThursday ~ Saturday Performance | 7:30pm \nSunday Performance | 7:00pm

SUMMARY:SPIKE WILNER\, PAUL GILL & ANTHONY PINCIOTTI
DESCRIPTION:Michael “Spike” Wilner was born in New York City and started playing piano at an early age.  He was inspired by a television program about the life of Scott Joplin to learn to play Ragtime Music.  He perused this art form throughout high school and performed Joplin’s “Maple Leaf Rag” at the St. Louis Ragtime Festival.  Although it was an informal appearance it\, nonetheless\, profoundly affected him and drove him to peruse a career in music.  In his high school jazz program he met pianist Peter Martin who introduced him and inspired him to learn more modern jazz. \nWilner decided to enter into the New School For Social Research’s Jazz and Contemporary Music department\, which was then in it’s first year.  Headed by the late saxophonist Arnie Lawrence\, this was an experimental forum where young jazz musicians were introduced to masters and left on their own to interact and play together.  In this fertile musical environment Wilner met and became friends with many of today’s leading jazz musicians.  Students at that time included: Peter Bernstein\, Jesse Davis\, Larry Goldings\, Brad Mehldau\, Roy Hargrove\, Sam Yahel\, Joe Strasser and many others.  It was there that Wilner had the good fortune to become the student of the late pianist Walter Davis Jr. as well as the late great Jaki Byard.  At this same time Wilner became involved at the Jazz Cultural Theater under the direction a Barry Harris and spent several years studying there. \nIt was also at this time that Wilner began to work professionally on the New York City jazz scene.  He began to play gigs in the various clubs and throughout the years has held down many steady engagements in well-known clubs.  Wilner was a house pianist at the legendary\, now defunct\, Village Gate as well as other long-gone clubs such as Visiones\, The Angry Squire and The Village Corner. In 1995\, Wilner became involved with the jazz club Smalls under the direction of owner Mitch Borden.  At Smalls\, Wilner has developed his music and his career.  He recorded a live record there “Late Night: Live At Smalls (Freshsound Records)” and now currently performs there each Sunday evening with his sextet\, Planet Jazz. \nDuring his last 15 years\, Wilner has played with many names now well known in jazz such as: Peter Bernstein\, Joe Magnarelli\, Grant Stewart\, Jesse Davis\, Eric Alexander\, Jim Rotundi\, Joe Farnsworth\, Bob Mover\, Ian Hedrickson-Smith\, Ryan Kisor\, Steve Davis\, Ralph Lalama\, Paul Gill\, Neal Miner\, Joe Strasser\, Ari Roland\, Chris Byars\, Sherman Irby\, Joel Frahm\, Omer Avital\, Stephon Harris and many others. Other professional work has included tours with the Artie Shaw Orchestra\, the Glenn Miller Orchestra and a European tour with Maynard Furgeson’s ”Big Bop Nouveu” band. Wilner has toured extensively in France as part of the Xavier Richardeau quintet.  In Paris he has also worked with bassist Pierre Boussaguet and trombonist Sarah Morrow. Wilner participated in two Thelonious Monk Piano Competitions\, one in 1989 as a finalist and one in 1993 as a semi-finalist. Wilner has worked with Wynton Marsalis on a ballet piece composed by Wynton and choreographed by Zhongmei Li that was performed at the Library of Congress. Wilner currently works and records with Washington D.C. vibraphone legend Lennie Cuje. He has also worked as rehearsal pianist with singer Tony Bennett and has recorded with Duke Ellington alumni Milt Grayson. \nSets: 7:30pm & 9:00pm \n\nSpike Wilner / Piano\n\n\nPaul Gill / Bass\n\n\nAnthony Pinciotti / Drums

SUMMARY:JOSHUA REDMAN GROUP
DESCRIPTION:Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the decade of the 1990s. Born in Berkeley\, California\, he is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. He was exposed at an early age to a variety of music (jazz\, classical\, rock\, soul\, Indian\, Indonesian\, Middle-Eastern\, African) and instruments (recorder\, piano\, guitar\, gatham\, gamelan)\, and began playing clarinet at age nine before switching to what became his primary instrument\, the tenor saxophone\, one year later. \nThe early influences of John Coltrane\, Ornette Coleman\, Cannonball Adderley and his father\, Dewey Redman\, as well as The Beatles\, Aretha Franklin\, the Temptations\, Earth\, Wind and Fire\, Prince\, The Police and Led Zeppelin drew Joshua more deeply into music. But although Joshua loved playing the saxophone and was a dedicated member of the award-winning Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble and Combo from 1983-86\, academics were always his first priority\, and he never seriously considered becoming a professional musician. \nIn 1991 Redman graduated from Harvard College summa cum laude\, with a B.A. in Social Studies. He had already been accepted by Yale Law School\, but deferred entrance for what he believed was only going to be one year. In November of that year\, five months after moving to New York\, Redman was named the winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. \nOver the past three decades\, the saxophonist\, composer\, and bandleader has consistently demonstrated how to honor music’s verities while expanding its reach in contemporary settings. On 2023’s where are we\, Redman delivers one of his most challenging and compelling albums to date\, in a program featuring typically brilliant supporting partners and (in a first for Redman) built around a dynamic vocalist. \nGabrielle Cavassa – voice\nJoshua Redman – tenor saxophone\nPaul Cornish – piano\nPhilip Norris – bass\nNazir Ebo – drums

SUMMARY:KENNY BARRON: BRAZILIAN EXPLORATIONS
DESCRIPTION:Called “one of the top jazz pianists in the world” by The Los Angeles Times\, Kenny Barron is a 2010 NEA Jazz Master and eleven-time GRAMMY nominee who helped define and extend the jazz tradition since his work with Dizzy Gillespie in the early ‘60s catapulted him into the spotlight. Extensive associations with Freddie Hubbard\, Yusef Lateef\, Stan Getz\, James Moody and Ron Carter built his peerless reputation as a sideman\, and he has recorded over 50 albums as a bandleader over his five-decade career. A seven-time recipient of Best Pianst by the Jazz Journalists Association\, Barron leads an ironclad trio with bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Johnathan Blake\, and regularly performs as a soloist and settings from duo to big band. \nHis third night brings the Bay Area premiere of a new sextet project embracing the music of Brazil and beyond. No stranger to Brazilian rhythms\, Barron recorded his first album of samba-influenced compositions three decades ago with 1993’s Verve date Sambao. \nHe is joined for this special night by flutist Anne Drummond and percussionist Valtinho Anastacio from his 2002 Sunnyside release Canta Brasil\, along with drummer Rafael Barata\, whose scintillating playing propelled the pianist’s 2013 Rio-recorded session Kenny Barron & the Brazilian Knights. Rounding out the band is Barron’s granddaughter\, the masterful vibraphonist Nikara Warren\, and virtuoso bassist John Patitucci.
