SUMMARY:CYNTHIA SCOTT FEATURING HOUSTON PERSON
DESCRIPTION:“In a rich\, soulful voice\, she sings messages of hope and compassion.” – Jazziz\n\nCynthia Scott\, a soulful\, Grammy-nominated vocalist\, leads a swinging quintet featuring the legendary tenor saxophonist Houston Person. Scott worked with Ray Charles as a Raelette before launching her successful solo career and subsequently performing with Hank Crawford\, David “Fathead” Newman\, Wynton Marsalis\, Harry Connick Jr.\, and many others. JazzTimes says Scott blends “the sinewy grit of Gladys Knight and the sophisticated sass of Shirley Horn” with “nods to such idols as Carmen\, Ella\, Sarah\, and Dinah.” The Chicago Tribune called her “a mesmerizing vocalist.”\n\nHouston Person is a very special guest with this quintet. All About Jazz says\, “Whatever imponderable talent it takes to stay at the top of one’s game for almost six decades\, as Person has\, he still has it in abundance.”

DESCRIPTION:A singular sound in the vocal world\, Kosins exemplifies the intersection of jazz and soul. In 2022\, Kosins earned several top nominations for her duet with Frank McComb\, “I Gotta Pinch Myself”\, featuring Najee. The song was nominated in the Song of the Year category at the SoulTracks Readers Choice Awards. She also played to sold-out audiences in Istanbul and the UK. Her latest single with renowned pianist\, composer\, and producer Bob Baldwin\, “Let’s Rewind”\, earned her another Number One Spot on the Smooth Jazz charts\, the UK Soul Chart Top 30 and the Indie Soul Chart Top 30. \n2023 has exciting news for all discerning soul jazz fans: new material with Paul Randolph and the legendary Al Hudson will end up on an EP\, due in the first quarter of the new year. And Kosins will also release several tracks she wrote during the making of her now-classic “Uncovered Soul” and its aftermath. Lookout also for more tour dates at home and abroad. Steeped in the jazz tradition as well as all of the energy and intensity of soul\, Kosins’s most recent album release\, Uncovered Soul\, was the natural next step in her prolific career. \nAfter successful engagements at the 2019 Blue Note at Sea Cruise and Blue Note Beijing\, the Exit Zero Jazz Festival\, a supporting performance for Gregory Porter in Atlanta\, an appearance at The Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society’s famed winter jazz series\, Detroit Vocalist and ASCAP Award Winning composer Kathy Kosins is thrilled to celebrate the two year-long success that her sixth studio album\, Uncovered Soul has gained across commercial radio. The driving\, funk-tinged track “Put the Voodoo on Me\,” is Kosins’s 4th consecutive Top 20 Smooth Jazz Single and topped the Indie Soul Chart at #1.

Devin Phillips has paid his dues performing\, touring and recording with top jazz artists such as Wynton Marsalis\, Eddie Palmieri\, The Headhunters\, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra\, musician Lenny Kravitz\, and Los Hombres Caliente\, with whom he recorded two award-winning albums.\n\nHis reputation as a sax man with intricate and rhythmically innovative sounds made him a popular feature at jazz festivals: France’s Jazz de Vien Festival; Tokyo’s JVC Jazz Festival; Itanbul’s The Ruins; Spain’s Barcelona Jazz Festival; the Netherlands’ North Sea Jazz and the New Orleans Jazz Festival. In 2005\, Phillips formed New Orleans Straight Ahead. But in August\, Hurricane Katrina muted the music. With all gone\, save his sax\, and his family scattered throughout the U.S.\, Phillips evacuated to Portland and reformed New Orleans Straight Ahead with other musician evacuees. Phillips and took advantage of a program created by the PDXJazz Festival in partnership with Azumano Travel\, which invited jazz musicians affected by the hurricane to come to Portland with their families\, either for temporary shelter or for good. The invitation included free transportation to Portland\, temporary housing\, and access to an active jazz network with performance and workshop opportunities. Over the course of six months\, more than 50 New Orleans musicians traveled to Oregon\, a dozen musicians\, including Phillips\, have decided to remain in Portland. Since arriving\, Phillips has performed at a number of local clubs and appreciated the opportunity to be part of the Portland Jazz Festival. Phillips says that opening the festival with “Amazing Grace\,” talking with McCoy Tyner and being asked to stand in for one of Eddie Palmieri’s frontline players were high points for him.

SUMMARY:EDDIE HENDERSON QUINTET
DESCRIPTION:Witness to History Record Release!\n\n“His musical wisdom\, gleaned during decades spent on the best jazz bandstands\, informs every unerring note.” – Downbeat. Eddie Henderson – trumpet Donald Harrison – alto saxophone George Cables – piano Gerald Cannon – bass Lenny White – drums Trumpeter Eddie Henderson celebrates the release of a highly anticipated new recording\, Witness to History\, that reflects on his incredible life in music and whose arrival coincides with the 50th anniversary of his 1973 recording debut as a leader\, Realization. \nJoining Henderson for these release performances is the spectacular quintet of his closest collaborators that he convened for the recording\, including alto saxophonist Donald Harrison\, pianist George Cables\, bassist Gerald Cannon\, and drummer Lenny White. Henderson’s “deft feel and plush sound made him a central figure in the worlds of jazz-funk and hard-bop in the 1970s\,” according to The New York Times. The Chicago Reader adds\, “His progressive\, assured\, and imaginative improvisations roll out in a glorious sun-splashed tone… he seems to dance through his solos\, balancing his quick clockwork technique with bursts of bluesy soul.” The eternally youthful Henderson has proven again that he is still making some of the most important music of his career into his 80s.

SUMMARY:LOWCOUNTRY JAZZ FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:Day 1: Jonathan Butler & Gregory Porter \nDay 2: Dave Koz\, Candy Dulfer\, Eric Darius\, Maysa Leek\, Avery Sunshine and \nUnder the artistic direction of producer Tony Clarke\, in collaboration with the Gaillard Center’s artistic team\, the festival returns with a stellar lineup of award-winning jazz singers and musicians Dave Koz & Friends\, Gregory Porter\, Avery*Sunshine\, and Jonathan Butler. \nThis year\, the finest smooth jazz combined with bluesy soul will create a relevant sound that resonates with the region’s discerning music audiences young and old.  Charleston\, South Carolina played an important role in the early development of jazz. It was a thriving center of African American music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, and was home to many of the first jazz musicians and bands. The city was also a major port\, which helped to spread jazz music to other parts of the country and the world.  The weekend celebrates these genres in the heart of downtown Charleston\, allowing attendees to experience this vibrant cultural city with a fitting soundtrack. \nThe Festival is welcoming back the soulful sounds of jazz legend Dave Koz\, the renowned saxophonist who delivers an unforgettable performance every time he takes the stage\, and adding headliner GRAMMY award-winning artist Gregory Porter\, whose cross-pollinated brand combines jazz\, soul\, and gospel. Inspirational singer-songwriter and guitarist Jonathan Butler and vibrant\, soulful singer\, pianist\, and composer Avery*Sunshine will open. \nThe Gaillard is cementing its role as a leading non-profit performing arts center in the Southeast dedicated to commissioning and presenting ambitious cultural programming and popular performances that engage audiences\, foster community\, and prompt essential dialogue. Central to this is the Labor Day weekend\, which sees the Lowcountry Jazz Festival take over the building. \nIn addition to annually bringing together jazz fans from across the Southeast\, the Festival is the primary fundraiser for Closing the Gap in Health Care\, Inc.

SUMMARY:DAVE STRYKER QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:When Dave Stryker was ten years old\, he was inspired by the Beatles to start playing guitar. His interest was rock and roll until he heard the albums My Favorite Things by John Coltrane and Beyond the Blue Horizon by George Benson. By seventeen\, he was a jazz guitarist in Omaha.
