At 14\, he was accepted into the prestigious New Orleans Center for Creative Arts\, whose alumni include Wynton and Branford Marsalis\, Harry Connick\, Jr. and Nicholas Payton. There\, trained in music theory and multi-styles composition\, he graduated in 2000 with top honors. He has also tutored under clarinetist and educator Alvin Batiste. Like many budding young horn players form the Big Easy\, he put his time in playing with the local brass bands in a traditional process of initiation in the musical process. Devin Phillips has paid his dues performing\, touring and recording with top jazz artists such as Wynton Marsalis\, Eddie Palmieri\, The Headhunters\, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra\, musician Lenny Kravitz\, and Los Hombres Caliente\, with whom he recorded two award-winning albums.\n\nHis reputation as a sax man with intricate and rhythmically innovative sounds made him a popular feature at jazz festivals: France’s Jazz de Vien Festival; Tokyo’s JVC Jazz Festival; Itanbul’s The Ruins; Spain’s Barcelona Jazz Festival; the Netherlands’ North Sea Jazz and the New Orleans Jazz Festival. In 2005\, Phillips formed New Orleans Straight Ahead. But in August\, Hurricane Katrina muted the music. With all gone\, save his sax\, and his family scattered throughout the U.S.\, Phillips evacuated to Portland and reformed New Orleans Straight Ahead with other musician evacuees. Phillips and took advantage of a program created by the PDXJazz Festival in partnership with Azumano Travel\, which invited jazz musicians affected by the hurricane to come to Portland with their families\, either for temporary shelter or for good. The invitation included free transportation to Portland\, temporary housing\, and access to an active jazz network with performance and workshop opportunities.\n\nOver the course of six months\, more than 50 New Orleans musicians traveled to Oregon\, a dozen musicians\, including Phillips\, have decided to remain in Portland. Since arriving\, Phillips has performed at a number of local clubs and appreciated the opportunity to be part of the Portland Jazz Festival. A multicultural celebration of life\, freedom\, and history \nThe Anglophone Caribbean is the subject of Etienne Charles’s Carnival: The Sound of a People\, by Trinidad-born\, Juilliard-trained trumpet player and composer Etienne Charles. Charles was fascinated by Jab Molassie (Molasses Devil)\, the blue-colored\, horned\, winged\, pitchfork-carrying\, fire-breathing carnival characters in Trinidad and Tobago – and the people who become them for Carnival. He went to the village of Paramin on Carnival Monday\, to watch them compete – only to dive in and start playing the biscuit tin along with them\, getting himself splattered with blue paint. A scholar of Caribbean music and conservator of traditions who also extends the traditions in everything he does\, Charles explains Carnival: “It’s music. It’s dance. It’s costume. It’s improvisation. It’s history. It’s social commentary\, political commentary. It’s all of that in one word. DESCRIPTION:Burt Freeman Bacharach | May 12\, 1928 – February 8\, 2023   \nAn American composer\, songwriter\, record producer\, and pianist who is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential figures of 20th-century popular music. Starting in the 1950s\, he composed hundreds of pop songs\, many in collaboration with lyricist Hal David. Bacharach’s music is characterized by unusual chord progressions\, influenced by his background in jazz harmony\, and uncommon selections of instruments for small orchestras. He arranged\, conducted\, and produced much of his recorded output. \nOver 1\,000 different artists have recorded Bacharach’s songs. From 1961 to 1972\, most of Bacharach and David’s hits were written specifically for and performed by Dionne Warwick\, but earlier associations from 1957 to 1963 saw the composing duo work with Marty Robbins\, Perry Como\, Gene McDaniels\, and Jerry Butler. Following the initial success of these collaborations\, Bacharach wrote hits for singers such as Gene Pitney\, Cilla Black\, Dusty Springfield\, Tom Jones\, and B. J. Thomas.

DESCRIPTION:As an acclaimed trombonist\, composer\, and producer\, Delfeayo Marsalis has also dedicated his prolific career to music theatre and education. Along with the Marsalis family of musicians including his father Ellis\, the artist was destined to a life in music. \n\n\n\n\n\nMarsalis has toured internationally with jazz legends such as Ray Charles\, Art Blakey\, Max Roach\, Elvin Jones and Slide Hampton\, as well as leading his own groups. \nAt the age of 17\, Marsalis began his career as a producer and has to date produced over 120 recordings garnering one Grammy award and several nominations. \nIn 2008\, he formed the Uptown Jazz Orchestra\, a highly entertaining ensemble that focuses on maintaining important jazz traditions such as riff playing\, New Orleans polyphony and spontaneous arrangements. \nDelfeayo also formed the Uptown Music Theatre in 2000. A non-profit organization that empowers youth through musical theatre training. He has written sixteen musicals to date based on historical and/or uniting the community. In addition\, he has composed over 90 songs that help introduce kids to jazz through musical theatre and has reached over 5\,000 students nationally with his Swinging with the Cool School soft introduction to jazz workshops. \nMarsalis has a dual Bachelor’s degree in Music performance and Production from Berklee College of Music\, and a Masters in Jazz Performance from the University of Louisville. A Doctorate has also been conferred from the New England College.

DESCRIPTION:Emilie-Claire Barlow is an award winning and critically acclaimed Canadian jazz singer\, arranger\, record producer and voice actress. A two time Juno Award winner and 6 time nominee\, she has released 12 self-produced albums on her own label\, Empress Music Group.​Her performing career spans over 24 years in venues ranging from Toronto’s storied Montreal Bistro & Top of the Senator\, to Tokyo’s Cotton Club and more recently concerts with symphony orchestras at Toronto’s Massey Hall and Montreal’s Maison Symphonique. She has performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival on seven occasions including a 2015 performance on the Main Stage with 50\,000 people attending.​Ms. Barlow has led bands featuring the finest musicians in Canada. Her work as a band leader and producer has been recognized with a Juno Award nomination for “Producer of Year” for her recording “Clear Day” (2015) — notable for being only the 2nd Jazz recording nominated in this category. Ms. Barlow is also one of a very few women to be honored as “Producer of the Year”.​Ms. Barlow’s all francophone recording “Seule ce soir” won a Juno and Felix Award in 2013 representing an unprecedented achievement in Canadian bilingualism.​After releasing her second holiday album Lumières d’hiver in 2017\, Emilie-Claire turned her attention to her duo project with Steve Webster\, Bocana. Bocana has released 8 singles over the last couple of years in the electro-pop\, lounge\, world music genres\, amassing a healthy following on streaming platforms. ECB has also released a collection of James Taylor covers as part of her JT Project.​Up next is her 13th full album\, due for release in early 2023.
