SUMMARY:NICOLE HENRY
DESCRIPTION:The New York Times\, Miami Herald\, and Jazz Times Magazine have compared powerhouse jazz vocalist Nicole Henry to Whitney Houston and Natalie Cole for her dynamic range\, impeccable phrasing\, and bluesy gospel style. Whether burning through a swing tune or gently caressing a ballad she returns to Middle C after four hugely successful shows\, truly makes each song uniquely her own and “aims right for the emotional center.” (Billboard) \nCelebrating a 20-year career and 8 critically acclaimed chart-topping CDs\, Nicole is the recipient of a Soul Train Award for “Best Traditional Jazz Performance\,” and has garnered four Top-10 jazz albums on the U.S. Billboard; JazzWeek; HMV Japan and U.K. Sweet Rhythms charts. \n\n\n\nThe New York Times raved\, “Every gesture and inflection conveyed confidence and mastery…I had the sense of being in the presence of a pop-soul superwoman.” Broadway World says\,“So powerful is her charisma\, so unique is her personality\, so rich is her music\, so abandoned is her joy that you can’t watch her without being drawn in.” \n\n\nHer latest chart-topping album\, “Time to Love Again” features reimagined versions of jazz standards as well as soul\, pop\, and folk songs by masters like Anthony Newly\, Stevie Wonder\, Joan Armatrading\, James Taylor\, Rodger & Hart and Buffy St. Marie. Ms. Henry will tell real stories through peerless interpretations of songs from that CD release as well as music from her vast catalogue and repertoire. Expect to be transported and thoroughly entertained…

The NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship is the nation’s highest honor in jazz. SUMMARY:SHARÓN CLARK: TRIBUTE TO BALTIMORE'S ETHEL ENNIS
DESCRIPTION:Sharón Clark [Vocals]\nBenjie Porecki [Piano]\nLenny Robinson [Drums]\nMichael Bowie [Bass] \nSharón Clark will be doing a tribute to Baltimore’s own\, Ethel Ennis\, who was an American jazz singer whose career spanned seven decades. Ennis spent the majority of her life in her hometown of Baltimore\, Maryland\, where she was affectionately known as the “First Lady of Jazz.” \n“You can’t underestimate the transformation of what seems like an ordinary song when an interpreter like Sharón Clark…tears it apart and peers inside” – The New York Times \nDC jazz fans beat a path to clubs whenever singer Sharón Clark takes the stage. This prolific artist has assumed the mantle of Washington’s Queen of Jazz. Jazz Times calls her “a revelation… I never thought I’d hear a singer with the range\, musicality and command of tone and timbre that was Sarah [Vaughan] at her best\, but now I have.” As a youngster\, Sharón Clark started her career with her twin sister as the Bottle Caps\, making promotional appearances for the Coca-Cola Company\, and she got her first solo jazz gig singing at King’s Dominion. Today\, she’s a regular at DC’s Blues Alley and is a featured soloist with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. No stranger to the road\, Sharón Clark has headlined at major festivals across the U.S. and toured internationally—she has a faithful fan base in Europe\, Russia and Israel. \nTicket Fees: $3.10 – $3.46

SUMMARY:MICHAEL FRANKS
DESCRIPTION:Michael Franks is an American singer and songwriter\, considered a leader of the quiet storm movement. He has recorded with a variety of well-known artists\, such as Patti Austin\, Art Garfunkel\, Brenda Russell\, Claus Ogerman\, Joe Sample\, and David Sanborn. His songs have been recorded by Gordon Haskell\, Shirley Bassey\, The Carpenters\, Kurt Elling\, Diana Krall\, Patti LaBelle\, Lyle Lovett\, The Manhattan Transfer\, Leo Sidran\, Veronica Nunn\, Carmen McRae\, Ringo Starr and Natalie Cole. \nFranks grew up in southern California with his father Thurman\, his mother Vera\, and two younger sisters. Although no one in his family was a musician\, his parents loved swing music\, and his early influences included Peggy Lee\, Nat King Cole\, Ira Gershwin\, Irving Berlin\, and Johnny Mercer. At age 14 Franks bought his first guitar\, a Japanese Marco Polo for $29.95 with six private lessons included; those lessons were the only music education that he received. \nAt University High in San Diego\, Franks discovered the poetry of Theodore Roethke with his off-rhymes and hidden meter. In high school\, he began singing folk-rock\, accompanying himself on guitar. Studying English at UCLA\, Michael discovered Dave Brubeck\, Patti Page\, Stan Getz\, João Gilberto\, Antonio Carlos Jobim\, and Miles Davis. He never studied music in college or later\, but earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA in comparative literature in 1966 and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Oregon in 1968. He had a teaching assistantship in a Ph.D. program in American literature at the University of Montreal before returning to teach part-time at UCLA. \nDuring this time Franks started writing songs\, starting with the antiwar musical Anthems in E-flat (1968) starring Mark Hamill. He also composed music for the films Cockfighter (1974)\, starring Warren Oates\, and Zandy’s Bride (1974)\, starring Liv Ullmann and Gene Hackman. Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee recorded three of his songs\, including “White Boy Lost in the Blues” on their album Sonny & Brownie. Franks played guitar\, banjo and mandolin on the album and joined them in touring. In 1973\, he recorded an eponymous album\, later reissued as Previously Unavailable\, which included the minor hit “Can’t Seem to Shake This Rock ‘n Roll.” \nIn 1976 Franks released his second album The Art of Tea\, which saw Franks begin a long relationship with Warner Bros. Records. The Art of Tea featured Joe Sample\, Larry Carlton\, and Wilton Felder of the Crusaders and included the hit song “Popsicle Toes”. His third album\, Sleeping Gypsy (1977)\, which includes the song “The Lady Wants to Know”\, was partially recorded in Brazil. Around this time\, percussionist Ray Armando gave Franks a cabasa\, which became a signature instrument for him to play on stage when he was not playing guitar. Burchfield Nines (1978)\, which includes the song “When the Cookie Jar Is Empty\,” reflects his move to New York City and features more of an East Coast sound. Since then\, Franks recorded more than 15 albums. \nHis best known works include “When I Give My Love to You\,” “Popsicle Toes\,” “Monkey See\, Monkey Do\,” “Lotus Blossom\,” “Tiger in the Rain\,” “Rainy Night in Tokyo\,” and “Tell Me All About It.” His biggest hit came in 1983 with “When Sly Calls (Don’t Touch That Phone)” from the album Passionfruit. Radio hits include “Your Secret’s Safe With Me” from 1985’s Skin Dive\, and “Island Life” from 1987’s The Camera Never Lies. \nMichael Franks also recorded his cover version of “Christmas Time Is Here” (the Christmas classic) with jazz pianist David Benoit released in 1996 on Benoit’s Christmas album\, Remembering Christmas. \nOpening Act: Andrea Miller \nParking: $30.00 advanced purchase | $35.00 day of \nValet: $40.00 advanced purchase | $45.00 day of (if not sold out)

DESCRIPTION:Christian Sands – Piano\nMarvin Sewell – Guitar\nYasushi Nakamura – Bass\nRyan Sands – Drums \nChristian Sands is an American jazz pianist and composer. Sands was mentored by pianist Billy Taylor\, who allowed the teenager to close one of the sets that Taylor played at the Kennedy Center. Sands went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music. The school’s Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra\, led by Bobby Sanabria\, recorded the album Kenya Revisited Live in 2009; it was nominated for a Latin Grammy. After graduating\, Sands joined Inside Straight\, one of bassist Christian McBride’s bands. In 2014\, Sands cited as influences McBride\, Wynton Marsalis\, Kenny Garrett\, and Marcus Roberts\, because “They’re coming from the tradition of bringing people into the music\, but also moving it forward into new directions”. In the same year\, Sands became an American Pianists Association Jazz Fellowship Awards Finalist. \nHis third album for Mack Avenue Records\, Be Water\, was released in 2020 and received a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Instrumental Composition category for the song “Be Water II.” On his stunning new album\, Be Water\, pianist Christian Sands takes inspiration from water’s tranquility and power and muses on the possibilities offered by echoing its fluidity and malleability. Just embarking on his 30s\, Sands has already enjoyed a remarkable career trajectory\, touring and recording with Christian McBride’s Inside Straight and Trio\, as well as collaborating with the likes of Gregory Porter and Ulysses Owens. \nFriday 6/23 & Saturday 6/24: 7:30pm | 9:30pm \nSunday 6/25: 5:00pm | 7:00pm \nTicket Fees: $3.46 – $4.16 \nStreaming: $10 | $1.70 Fees

SUMMARY:CARNIVAL: THE SOUND OF A PEOPLE
DESCRIPTION:Organized by trumpeter\, percussionist\, and composer Etienne Charles\, this high-energy spectacle brings the street energy of Trinbagonian Carnival to the stage. Mixing multimedia and traditional carnival characters live with band Creole Soul\, Charles’ original compositions are brought to life with ritualistic imagery\, grooves\, and dances. \nFollowing the performance\, meet us on the waterfront terrace as dancers from Miami Carnival join us in the after-performance celebrations and we dance to Caribbean sounds and beats with a live set by Akia Dorsainvil aka DJ Pressure Point. \nMiami Carnival has a long-standing tradition of providing a kaleidoscope of Caribbean cultures under one umbrella. This medley of ingredients includes color\, energy\, pageantry\, music\, and excitement rooted in Caribbean culture. The Parade of Bands features the colorful costumes of over 20\,000 masqueraders and revelers parading and competing for bragging rights.
