SUMMARY:HOWARD HEWETT & MICHAEL LINGTON
DESCRIPTION:Howard Hewett is one of the most gifted vocalists in the Post-Marvin Gaye era of pop R&B. \nHe started singing as a child\, fronting his older sisters in The Hewett Singers. The group toured the gospel circuit. As a teen\, Hewett sharpened his crooner skills in a funk band called Lyfe. In 1976\, Hewett moved to Los Angeles and formed a group put together by the owners of the historic Maverick’s Flat\, called Beverly Hills. \nHewett got his mainstream break as the male vocal lead in Shalamar\, a centerpiece of Dick Griffey’s SOLAR (Sound of Los Angeles Records) label. His tenor voice mixed beautifully with the bright vocals of Jody Watley\, the dancing skills of Jeffery Daniels and the writing and production of Leon Sylvers III. The group gave the world feel-good dance favorites The Second Time Around and A Night to Remember\, the baby-making classic For the Lover in You\, as well as a number of beautiful B-side ballads like You Can Count On Me and Somewhere There’s a Love. When Watley and Daniels left the group in 1983\, Hewett continued to lead Mickey Free and Delisa Davis in the reconstituted Shalamar. This version of the group was best known for soundtrack contributions on Footloose and Beverly Hills Cop with Dancing in the Sheets and the Grammy-winning Don’t Get Stopped in Beverly Hills\, respectively. \nIn the mid-eighties\, Howard sets out on his solo career\, releasing I Commit to Love in 1986 on Elektra and from the first single Hewett made magic\, giving his amorous voice and whimsical lyrics to Stay\, I’m For Real and the title track. Most beloved track on this freshman release would be his spiritually grounded Say Amen. This single soared on the Inspirational charts and has enjoyed the status of a modern gospel classic. \nSubsequent projects have solidified Hewett’s place in the high ranks of R&B balladeers by writing and collaborating and lending his voice within an intimate group of crooners\, including George Duke\, Quincy Jones\, James Ingram\, Anita Baker\, Prince and Stanley Clarke. With Elektra\, he released Forever and Ever (1988- Once\, Twice\, Three Times)\, Howard Hewett (1990- Show Me) and Allegiance (1992- Can We Try Again). \nLater work shows increasing authenticity as Hewett rips song lyrics straight from his soul. It’s Time (1994- This Love is Forever)\, written and produced almost exclusively with long time friend and collaborator Monte Seward\, displays all the vulnerability involved in falling and staying in love. In 2001\, Hewett released the all inspirational album The Journey\, where he shows us that his faith can’t be separated from his heart and soul. \nHewett continues to seduce audiences and eardrums as he is constantly touring and intermittently releasing new music. \n“Of all the fine vocalists working today\, Howard Hewett is one of the finest.” – Babyface \nMichael Lington is an award winning saxophonist\, songwriter\, producer\, recording artist and a purveyor of soul and contemporary jazz. \nPowering full steam ahead into the next phase of his dynamic 25 year solo career\, saxophonist Michael Lington captures all the freewheeling magic\, energy and optimism we’re feeling post-pandemic with his latest perfectly titled Billboard single “Play” – a funked out\, fun-spirited\, perfect for summertime jam that marks his first time co-writing and co-producing with longtime friend and fellow horn master and hit maker Darren Rahn. The groove-intensive track also features Paul Jackson Jr.’s blistering guitar fire and the non-stop grooves of bassist Mel Brown and drummer Tarell Martin. While creating a forward minded way to keep joy and hope flowing in turbulent times\, “Play” – from Lington’s upcoming EP and first set of original tunes since 2018’s Silver Lining – also reflects the multi-talented artist’s ever-bustling role as a first time dad to his son Landon and the passion he’s bringing to his latest endeavor\, hosting his own Friday radio show on Smooth Jazz 247. \nHe has released 12 solo albums and has 27 singles that have charted on the Billboard and Radio & Records (R&R) contemporary jazz radio charts. \nOver the course of his career\, Lington has collaborated with Michael Bolton\, Barry Manilow\, Randy Crawford\, Bobby Caldwell\, Kenny Lattimore\, Booker T. Jones\, Ray Parker\, Jr.\, Taylor Dayne\, Brian Culbertson\, William Bell\, Dave Stewart\, Vince Gill and many others. \nHe has toured regularly his entire career\, averaging 60-80 shows per year. In recent years\, Lington joined Michael Bolton on tour as his opening act & special guest. Lington and Bolton performed over 350 shows together in more than 40 countries. \nBarry Manilow invited Lington to join his “One Last Time” arena tour. Michael opened the show and joined Manilow on the song “Brooklyn Blues” during the headliner’s main set. \nIn Nov. 2016\, Lington performed for the Memphis Music Hall Of Fame ceremony\, honoring 2016 inductee Charles Lloyd. Stax Records soul singer William Bell and Snoop Dogg also performed at the induction ceremony. \nIn September 2019 it was announced that Michael would join the Dave Koz and Friends; Gifts Of The Season Christmas tour alongside Koz\, Jonathan Butler\, Melissa Manchester and Chris Walker. The 22-date concert tour traveled across the U.S. between November 29 and December 23\, 2019. \nIn 2020 during the pandemic\, Michael become one of the leading music artists producing hi-quality virtual shows\, which earned him a most innovative artist award by Stageit! \nLington is signed to the The Reliant Talent agency for worldwide representation and has a publishing administration deal with Kobalt Music Publishing. He is an ASCAP songwriter/publisher and a 25-year voting member of the Recording Academy. \nParking: $30.00 advanced purchase | $35.00 day of \nValet: $40.00 advanced purchase | $45.00 day of (if not sold out)

In 2021\, DJ Steve Aoki remixed Benson’s hit “Give Me The Night\,” with a rugged house beat introducing the irresistible R&B-pop gem to a whole new audience. His recent albums have earned features and rave reviews in the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, American Songwriter\, Forbes\, and Newsweek. In 2020\, Benson was inducted into jazz bible DownBeat Magazine’s Hall Of Fame. The following year he was inducted by music legend Quincy Jones into New Jersey’s Hall Of Fame— an honor from which he received a personal congratulatory note from President Obama. \nParking: $30.00 advanced purchase | $35.00 day of \nValet: $40.00 advanced purchase | $45.00 day of (if not sold out)

SUMMARY:HOT PANTS DE FRANCE
DESCRIPTION:Assembling some of the hottest talent from around the world\, touring/session guitarist (Maynard Ferguson\, NKOTB\, Kenny Loggins) and Emmy nominated film/tv composer Sam Kaufmann formed the Gypsy Jazz and Swing Group – Hot Pants de France. Sam has liberated himself from the Hot Jazz canon and presents his own uninhibited\, modern style with Hot Pants de France and highlights what is still to come. Well received by both listeners and the press\, the vision was to bring a fresh\, contemporary feel to hits from the ’70s\, ’80s and ’90s by arranging them in the style of jazz great Django Reinhardt. The intention was not to simply recapitulate the music\, but to interpret it with a uniqueness\, incorporating modern influences\, while remaining true to the innovative style created by Django and Stéphane Grappelli in Quintette du Hot Club de France\, one of the first all-string jazz bands. \nThe dichotomy between musical styles of the ’40s and the ’90s is bridged by our various vocalists including Lisa Rittner\, and Valeria Koka. Each elegantly bringing the music into the sound of “today”. Lisa honed her chops for a decade on the Queen Mary and the band Sound F/X. In addition to her voice\, Lisa gracefully adds her Saxophone prowess to Hot Pants’ samba-esque version of “Black Hole Sun”. While Valeria is best known for her vocal work with Ukranian Superstar Artem Pivovarov and her own Valeria Koka Sextet. \nHarkening back to the establishing sound of OG – Stéphane Grappelli\, Jane Young (2nd Place International Grand Prix of St. Petersburg\, Swiss Dream Circus\, NBC\, Nova/PBS) constructed excellent counterpoint to Sam’s guitar lines. The two play off each other like a conversation between old friends. \nFinally\, touring/session bassist Jack O’Roonie (Andre Williams\, Danny B Harvey\, Wanda Jackson and Labella Strings endorsee) outlines the harmony while controlling the dynamics and pace of the band with his fantastical yet proficient bass lines. \nYears of experience and effortless interaction are clear – noteworthy on the recordings as well as on stage. Standing on the works by Django Reinhardt\, it is this unique mix of pop\, jazz\, americana and inventive compositions that makes the unmistakable sound of the group. \nBAND MEMBERSSam Kaufmann – Reharmonizer and GuitarLisa Rittner – Vocals and SaxValeria Koka – VocalsJack O’Roonie – BassAndrea Reynolds and Jane Young – Violin

SUMMARY:JOE ALTERMAN
DESCRIPTION:Joe Alterman Album Release Show \nAtlanta native Joe Alterman expresses a certain upbeat naivete\, with a broad smile and bright eyes that make you feel welcome. One would not guess that this is a man hailed by greats; Ramsey Lewis describes his music as “happy music with tasty meat on the bones\,” Les McCann states “Joe’s on a ‘blow your mind’ level\,” and Ahmad Jamal calls him “a very special artist.” Journalist Nat Hentoff championed three of Alterman’s albums\, as well as his writing (Joe wrote liner notes to three Wynton Marsalis/JLCO albums)\, calling one of Joe’s columns “one of the very best pieces on the essence of jazz\, the spirit of jazz\, that I’ve ever read\, and I’m not exaggerating.” \nJoe Alterman began at NYU with a BA and Masters in Jazz Piano from NYU and has since performed at many world renowned venues including the Kennedy Center\, Lincoln Center\, Birdland and Blue Note  alongside Houston Person\, Les McCann\, Dick Gregory\, Ramsey Lewis\, and his own trio\, among others. Downbeat describes his sound as “rooted in the blues\, and with a touch reminiscent of the great pianists of the 1950s—Red Garland\, Ahmad Jamal\, Bill Evans.” It is clear Joe hits all of the necessary points for Jazz critics and fans alike. \nBut there is more to the story\, of course. The 21st century has brought another transition for this thing called jazz; in one moment we see the push and pull between tradition and progression\, and in another we see Pop and Hip-Hop musicians emulating and sampling. In Joe Alterman we find none of this struggle; the music just sounds good. Our conscious faculties are instantly disabled as we tap our feet\, feeling the intent and joy of his playing. An old classic is new when you feel good in the moment. Or\, as Hentoff wrote about Alterman in the Wall Street Journal\, “Alterman’s continually evolving presence on the jazz scene surely makes people smile and\, if the room is right\, dance. There’ll be no need for any last rites of jazz.”

SUMMARY:SAMARA JOY
DESCRIPTION:Concert On The Lawn presented in collaboration with Jazz At Lincoln Center. \n22-year-old Samara Joy makes her case to join the likes of Sarah\, Ella\, and Billie as the next mononymous jazz singing sensation recorded by the venerable label. Her voice\, rich and velvety yet precociously refined\, has already earned her fans like Anita Baker and Regina King\, appearances on the TODAY Show and millions of likes on TikTok — cementing her status as perhaps the first Gen Z jazz singing star. On Linger Awhile\, Samara will introduce that massive audience to a slew of classic standards several times older than she is through her timeless\, irresistible sound. \nSamara is still relatively new to jazz. Growing up in the Bronx\, it was music of the past — the music of her parent’s childhoods\, as she put it — that she listened to most. She treasures her musical lineage\, which stretches back to her grandparents Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon\, both of whom performed with Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and runs through her father\, who is a singer\, songwriter and producer who toured with gospel artist Andraé Crouch. “Sometimes I catch myself when I’m singing — I’m like\, ‘Whoa\, that was a dad moment’\,” Samara quips. Eventually\, she did follow in the family tradition\, singing in church and then with the jazz band at Fordham High School for the Arts\, with whom she won Best Vocalist at JALC’s Essentially Ellington competition. That led to her enrolling in SUNY Purchase’s jazz studies program\, where she fell deeply in love with the music.

SUMMARY:THE HIGHTOWER HARPER HANG
DESCRIPTION:Singer/Songwriter Tony Hightower is taking up the mantle to be a bridge that ushers R&B audiences into Jazz…Real Jazz. With years of experience as a musical performer and actor with familiar roots that place him firmly within the music’s firmament\, Atlanta-native Hightower is still just getting started on this benevolent turn in his journey. And he is bringing a lot of young people with him. \n\n\nGrowing up in Atlanta with a local legend mother who was a Funk-Rock singer but could sing anything and mentored many singers coming behind her\, Tony learned music first-hand from Bobby Blue Bland and the Platters to Mother’s Finest\, S.O.S. Band and Brick. And as mother Theresa evolved as a first-class singer – shifting her focus to Jazz that resulted in her historic residency at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in once fiercely segregated Buckhead district of Atlanta\, Georgia – so\, too\, did Tony’s taste begin to broaden. The artist that Theresa followed at The Ritz: Freddy Cole\, Nat’s brother. \nTrumpeter Terence Harper started playing the drums at the age of two and at twelve years old began playing the trumpet. While in middle school he began playing the drums for one of the Spelman College Jazz ensembles under the direction of Joe Jennings\, while also being featured on a recording with the Inman Middle School jazz band on both trumpet and drums. \nHarper attended North Atlanta High School Center of the Performing Arts and played trumpet in both jazz band and symphonic band under the direction of Mr. Reginald Colbert. During his high school years he started to focus more on both classical and jazz trumpet and has won numerous auditions during his high school term including the Georgia Music Educators Association All State band\, principal trumpet for the district honor band\, The Talent Development Program and the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony at Emory University. Terence has also attended the prestigious Interlochen Arts camp in Michigan and has also taught trumpet performance and jazz studies at Summerbridge Atlanta at the Lovett School. \nHe graduated from Rutgers University as a classical trumpet major in 2009\, where he studied under William Fielder\, who has been regarded as one of the greatest trumpet instructors of his generation. \nEvery Thursday: Music from 8:00pm ~ Midnight | Hang til 2:00am \nCover: $10.000 | Musicians: $5.00 | Free parking in the lot just past slutty vegan atl
