DESCRIPTION:Christian Sands – Piano\nMarvin Sewell – Guitar\nYasushi Nakamura – Bass\nRyan Sands – Drums \nChristian Sands is an American jazz pianist and composer. Sands was mentored by pianist Billy Taylor\, who allowed the teenager to close one of the sets that Taylor played at the Kennedy Center. Sands went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music. The school’s Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra\, led by Bobby Sanabria\, recorded the album Kenya Revisited Live in 2009; it was nominated for a Latin Grammy. After graduating\, Sands joined Inside Straight\, one of bassist Christian McBride’s bands. In 2014\, Sands cited as influences McBride\, Wynton Marsalis\, Kenny Garrett\, and Marcus Roberts\, because “They’re coming from the tradition of bringing people into the music\, but also moving it forward into new directions”. In the same year\, Sands became an American Pianists Association Jazz Fellowship Awards Finalist. \nHis third album for Mack Avenue Records\, Be Water\, was released in 2020 and received a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Instrumental Composition category for the song “Be Water II.” On his stunning new album\, Be Water\, pianist Christian Sands takes inspiration from water’s tranquility and power and muses on the possibilities offered by echoing its fluidity and malleability. Mixing multimedia and traditional carnival characters live with band Creole Soul\, Charles’ original compositions are brought to life with ritualistic imagery\, grooves\, and dances. \nFollowing the performance\, meet us on the waterfront terrace as dancers from Miami Carnival join us in the after-performance celebrations and we dance to Caribbean sounds and beats with a live set by Akia Dorsainvil aka DJ Pressure Point. \nMiami Carnival has a long-standing tradition of providing a kaleidoscope of Caribbean cultures under one umbrella. This medley of ingredients includes color\, energy\, pageantry\, music\, and excitement rooted in Caribbean culture. There\, trained in music theory and multi-styles composition\, he graduated in 2000 with top honors. He has also tutored under clarinetist and educator Alvin Batiste. Like many budding young horn players form the Big Easy\, he put his time in playing with the local brass bands in a traditional process of initiation in the musical process. Devin Phillips has paid his dues performing\, touring and recording with top jazz artists such as Wynton Marsalis\, Eddie Palmieri\, The Headhunters\, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra\, musician Lenny Kravitz\, and Los Hombres Caliente\, with whom he recorded two award-winning albums.\n\nHis reputation as a sax man with intricate and rhythmically innovative sounds made him a popular feature at jazz festivals: France’s Jazz de Vien Festival; Tokyo’s JVC Jazz Festival; Itanbul’s The Ruins; Spain’s Barcelona Jazz Festival; the Netherlands’ North Sea Jazz and the New Orleans Jazz Festival. In 2005\, Phillips formed New Orleans Straight Ahead. But in August\, Hurricane Katrina muted the music. With all gone\, save his sax\, and his family scattered throughout the U.S.\, Phillips evacuated to Portland and reformed New Orleans Straight Ahead with other musician evacuees. Phillips and took advantage of a program created by the PDXJazz Festival in partnership with Azumano Travel\, which invited jazz musicians affected by the hurricane to come to Portland with their families\, either for temporary shelter or for good. The invitation included free transportation to Portland\, temporary housing\, and access to an active jazz network with performance and workshop opportunities.\n\nOver the course of six months\, more than 50 New Orleans musicians traveled to Oregon\, a dozen musicians\, including Phillips\, have decided to remain in Portland. Since arriving\, Phillips has performed at a number of local clubs and appreciated the opportunity to be part of the Portland Jazz Festival. Charles was fascinated by Jab Molassie (Molasses Devil)\, the blue-colored\, horned\, winged\, pitchfork-carrying\, fire-breathing carnival characters in Trinidad and Tobago – and the people who become them for Carnival. He went to the village of Paramin on Carnival Monday\, to watch them compete – only to dive in and start playing the biscuit tin along with them\, getting himself splattered with blue paint. A scholar of Caribbean music and conservator of traditions who also extends the traditions in everything he does\, Charles explains Carnival: “It’s music. It’s dance. It’s costume. Starting in the 1950s\, he composed hundreds of pop songs\, many in collaboration with lyricist Hal David. Bacharach’s music is characterized by unusual chord progressions\, influenced by his background in jazz harmony\, and uncommon selections of instruments for small orchestras. He arranged\, conducted\, and produced much of his recorded output. \nOver 1\,000 different artists have recorded Bacharach’s songs. From 1961 to 1972\, most of Bacharach and David’s hits were written specifically for and performed by Dionne Warwick\, but earlier associations from 1957 to 1963 saw the composing duo work with Marty Robbins\, Perry Como\, Gene McDaniels\, and Jerry Butler. Following the initial success of these collaborations\, Bacharach wrote hits for singers such as Gene Pitney\, Cilla Black\, Dusty Springfield\, Tom Jones\, and B. J. Thomas.

DESCRIPTION:Stacey Kent is a jazz singer in the mould of the greats\, with a legion of fans worldwide\, a host of honors and awards including a Grammy nomination\, album sales in excess of 2 million\, Platinum\, Double-Gold and Gold-selling albums that have reached a series of No. 1 chart positions during the span of her career. \nWith a catalogue of studio albums\, including the Platinum-selling\, Grammy-nominated Breakfast On The Morning Tram (EMI/Blue Note 2007) and an impressive list of collaborations\, Stacey has graced the stages of more than 55 countries over the course of her career. \nStacey has cemented her reputation as a singer capable of putting a distinctive stamp on an impressive repertoire of standards. Her ability to communicate emotion through a nuanced and minimalist approach was showcased on Jim Tomlinson’s album\, The Lyric (Token). This album brought her to the attention of Blue Note records with whom she signed in 2007. With each successive album\, Stacey’s style has become more honed as her artistic outlook has broadened\, leading her beyond the Great American Songbook to French chanson and Brazilian music which form an ever-larger part of her repertoire. \nAmong French\, Italian and German\, Stacey also speaks Portuguese. She has toured widely in Brazil and collaborated with many of her heroes including Edu Lobo\, Dori and Danilo Caymmi\, Roberto Menescal\, and most notably Marcos Valle\, who invited her to celebrate his 50 years in music on the album\, Ao Vivo (Sony 2013). \nDuring the COVID 19 pandemic she was busy recording from home and staying in touch with her fans through social media. She has released Songs From Other Places and her forthcoming studio album\, Summer Me\, Winter Me\, originally scheduled for release in October 2020 is now planned for release in 2022. \nShowtimes vary through the week. The legendary Bemelmans Bar located in The Carlyle in Manhattan’s storied Upper East Side\, has a legacy of hosting great cabaret and jazz greats from the likes of Bobby Short\, Eartha Kitt\, Elaine Stritch\, John Pizzarelli and the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ). \nTo date\, Loston’s career in music has been significant and he will tell you he is living his dream. SUMMARY:DELFEAYO MARSALIS & THE UPTOWN JAZZ ORCHESTRA
DESCRIPTION:As an acclaimed trombonist\, composer\, and producer\, Delfeayo Marsalis has also dedicated his prolific career to music theatre and education. Along with the Marsalis family of musicians including his father Ellis\, the artist was destined to a life in music. \n\n\n\n\n\nMarsalis has toured internationally with jazz legends such as Ray Charles\, Art Blakey\, Max Roach\, Elvin Jones and Slide Hampton\, as well as leading his own groups. \nAt the age of 17\, Marsalis began his career as a producer and has to date produced over 120 recordings garnering one Grammy award and several nominations. \nIn 2008\, he formed the Uptown Jazz Orchestra\, a highly entertaining ensemble that focuses on maintaining important jazz traditions such as riff playing\, New Orleans polyphony and spontaneous arrangements. \nDelfeayo also formed the Uptown Music Theatre in 2000. A non-profit organization that empowers youth through musical theatre training. He has written sixteen musicals to date based on historical and/or uniting the community. In addition\, he has composed over 90 songs that help introduce kids to jazz through musical theatre and has reached over 5\,000 students nationally with his Swinging with the Cool School soft introduction to jazz workshops. \nMarsalis has a dual Bachelor’s degree in Music performance and Production from Berklee College of Music\, and a Masters in Jazz Performance from the University of Louisville. A Doctorate has also been conferred from the New England College.
