DESCRIPTION:Itamar Borochov\, Trumpet/Effects/Vocals\nRob Clearfield\, Piano/Effects\nSam Weber\, Bass\nJay Sawyer\, Drums\n\nRaised in the cosmopolitan port city of Jaffa\, now a significant presence on the international jazz scene\, Borochov is creating a new musical hybrid – bringing the sacred sounds of his upbringing to a jazz quartet setting. His third release Blue Nights (Laborie Jazz 2019) is a nine-track multi-cultural joyride of enchanting lyricism\, exotic motifs\, anthemic builds and virtuosic expression. Borochov first heard Sephardic music in his local synagogue and absorbed these ‘maqams’ (modes) of the greater Middle East and North Africa alongside a range of other musical influences\, including the Mizrahi and Ashkenazi musical flavors that are his birthright. He began playing trumpet at the age of eleven and immersed himself in the discovery of jazz\, inspired by the jazz trumpet lineage of Louis Armstrong\, Clark Terry\, Miles Davis\, Kenny Dorham\, Lee Morgan\, and Booker Little through to Wynton Marsalis\, and citing the influence of Ben Webster for his assured yet wistful warm airy tone.\n\nIn 2007 Borochov relocated to New York to study at the New School and attend Barry Harris’s weekly workshops. His deep knowledge of these various musical disciplines is incorporated organically into his original jazz writing\, building a bridge between the near-East and the modal styles of Miles Davis\, John Coltrane and others. ​ “This synergetic quest is accomplished with great integrity\, demonstrating in-depth knowledge only possible from one who has experienced these traditions firsthand.” – Jazz Magazine In addition to recording three albums as a leader\, Borochov also appears on three albums with Yemen Blues\, of which he was a founding member\, arranger and co-producer. He has toured across four continents and performed at prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center\, The Kennedy Center\, SummerStage at Central Park\, Blue Note NY\, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club\, Bimhuis\, Flagey and international festivals including Roskilde\, Vitoria\, Lviv\, Montreal & Ottawa Jazz Festivals\, London Jazz Festival\, Moscow Jazz Festival\, Tel Aviv & Red Sea Jazz Festivals\, Jazz à Liège & Shanghai World Music Festival.\n\nThe Itamar Borochov Quartet was chosen to showcase at WOMEX 2019 in Tampere\, Finland. In 2021 Borochov was commissioned by Brazos Valley Symphony\, Texas to compose a suite for jazz quartet and string orchestra – ‘Emergence’\, which he first performed with the orchestra in June 2021. He also recorded a new work composed especially for him by Shanan Estreicher – ‘All You Shining Stars’ for improvised trumpet and string septet\, which premiered online in February. ​ Borochov won the prestigious 2020 LetterOne ‘Rising Stars’ Jazz Award European edition\, which was presented to him in February 2021 by vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater. SUMMARY:KEVIN BALES QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:By some measures\, Kevin Bales was a latecomer to jazz\, already 17 when he encountered the sounds and structures and became captivated by the freedom and corresponding challenges of the music. But if late to the party\, he wasted no time in immersing himself in the celebration\, declaring total commitment to what would be his life’s work and backing his announcement by resigning his job and designated career in computer programming. Kevin could commit to jazz with a reasonable degree of expectation. He was already an accomplished pianist\, with classical chops refined since the age of 10. So accomplished he was invited to audition for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra\, then under the direction of its most storied conductor Robert Shaw\, at age 16. \nKevin’s initial career move was to the University of North Florida and a budding if little-known jazz program. There he met and performed with\, and went on to record and tour with\, a number of monumental artists who had settled into that burgeoning North Florida jazz scene. Giants like Wynton Marsalis\, Louie Bellson\, Eddie Daniels\, James Moody\, Ben Tucker\, Ira Sullivan\, Sam Rivers\, and Nat Adderley. He counts among his mentors bassist Ben Tucker\, multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan\, guitar legends Nathen Page and Jack Petersen\, and the fiercely individual saxophonist Bunky Green. His meeting with Bunky Green led to five years of tours. His encounter with guitarist Nathen Page blossomed into 15 years of spot tours and four albums. And his work with trumpeter extraordinaire Marcus Printup has become a lifetime association that has included recordings on Blue Note/Capital records. Ten years touring and recording with vocal iconoclast Rene Marie culminated in a Grammy Nominated album. His most recent recording of music composed by Fred Rogers was selected as one of the top 10 albums of 2018 by Cadence Magazine and AllAboutJazz.com \nFew artists have the patience for teaching – as are few teachers accomplished players. But Kevin has amassed a reputation for his prowess in both professions. While still a senior at North Florida he was drafted into a full teaching load\, and continued to be an integral part of the school’s jazz program for upwards of a decade. Today\, Kevin manages his own jazz program\, overseeing an ambitious schedule of ambitious jazz students and runs the improvisation and small group programs at Georgia State University. \nKevin has amassed a long list of awards and a reputation as one of the finest jazz pianists performing anywhere. In 1994\, less than a decade into jazz\, he won the American Pianist Association’s Jazz Piano Competition. In addition to nearly every important jazz venue in the South\, he has performed in some of the most acclaimed clubs and festivals in America and around the world: the JVC Jazz Festival in New York\, The Bakery in Los Angeles\, The Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center jazz series\, the Toronto and Edinburgh jazz festivals\, and the Moscow Center for the Performing Arts. \nShows ~ 7:30pm | 9:30pm

SUMMARY:CHUCK ISRAELS JAZZ ORCHESTRA
DESCRIPTION:Chuck Israels is a composer/arranger/bassist who has worked with Billie Holiday\, Benny Goodman\, Coleman Hawkins\, Stan Getz\, Herbie Hancock\, J.J. Johnson\, John Coltrane\, and many others.  He is best known for his work with the Bill Evans Trio from 1961 through 1966 and for his pioneering accomplishments in Jazz Repertory as Director of the National Jazz Ensemble from 1973 to 1981. \nAmong Chuck’s many recordings as a bassist\, some outstanding ones include: Coltrane Time\, with John Coltrane; My Point of View\, with Herbie Hancock;  Getz au Go-Go\, with Stan Getz; and many recordings with the Bill Evans Trio\, including The Town Hall Concert; The Second Trio; Trio ’65; Live at the Trident; Time Remembered; and  Live at Shelley’s Manne Hole. \nRecently retired from directing the jazz studies program at Western Washington University\, Chuck has moved to Portland\, OR to work in its vibrant jazz community and participate in his favorite Northwest city’s cultural life.

The Left Bank Jazz Society was a Baltimore\, Maryland-based organization and music venue. It formed in 1964\, hosting a series of concerts featuring nationally acclaimed performers like John Coltrane and Duke Ellington. \nNearly sixty years after he moved to the United States from Kingston\, Jamaica\, his hometown\, Grammy nominated pianist Monty Alexander is an American classic\, touring the world relentlessly with various projects\, delighting a global audience drawn to his vibrant personality and soulful message. A perennial favorite at Jazz festivals and venues worldwide and at the Montreux Jazz Festival where he has appeared 23 times since 1976\, his spirited conception is one informed by the timeless verities: endless melody-making\, effervescent grooves\, sophisticated voicings\, a romantic spirit\, and a consistent predisposition\, as Alexander accurately states\, “to build up the heat and kick up a storm.” In the course of any given performance\, Alexander applies those aesthetics to a repertoire spanning a broad range of jazz and Jamaican musical expressions—the American songbook and the blues\, gospel and bebop\, calypso and reggae. Documented on more than 75 recordings and cited as the fifth greatest jazz pianist ever in The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time (Hal Leonard Publishing)\, the Jamaican government designated Alexander Commander in the Order of Distinction in 2000 and conferred on him the national honor of the Order of Jamaica in 2022 for “Sterling Contributions to the Promotions of Jamaican Music and the Jazz Genre Interpretations Globally”. SUMMARY:JOHNATHAN BLAKE
DESCRIPTION:Johnathan Blake\, one of the most accomplished drummers of his generation\, has also proven himself a complete and endlessly versatile musician. Blake’s gift for composition and band leading reflects years of live and studio experience across the aesthetic spectrum. Heralded by NPR Music as “the ultimate modernist\,” he has collaborated with Pharoah Sanders\, Ravi Coltrane\, Tom Harrell\, Hans Glawischnig\, Avishai Cohen\, Donny McCaslin\, Linda May Han Oh\, Jaleel Shaw\, Chris Potter\, Maria Schneider\, Alex Sipiagin\, Kris Davis and countless other distinctive voices. DownBeat once wrote\, “It’s a testament to Blake’s abilities that he makes his presence felt in any context.” A frequent presence on Blue Note records over the past several years\, Blake has contributed his strong\, limber pulse and airy precision to multiple leader releases from Blue Note artists including Dr. Lonnie Smith’s Breathe (2021)\, All in My Mind (2018) and Evolution (2016) and Kenny Barron’s Concentric Circles (2018)\, the latter whose trio Blake has been a vital member for nearly 15 years. \nBorn in Philadelphia in 1976\, Blake is the son of renowned jazz violinist John Blake\, Jr. — himself a stylistic chameleon and an important ongoing influence. After beginning on drums at age 10\, Johnathan gained his first performing experience with the Lovett Hines Youth Ensemble\, led by the renowned Philly jazz educator. It was during this period\, at Hines’s urging\, that Blake began to compose his own music. Later he worked with saxophonist Robert Landham in a youth jazz ensemble at Settlement Music School. Blake graduated from George Washington High School and went on to attend the highly respected jazz program at William Paterson University\, where he studied with Rufus Reid\, John Riley\, Steve Wilson and Horace Arnold. At this time Blake also began working professionally with the Oliver Lake Big Band\, Roy Hargrove and David Sanchez. In 2006 he was recognized with an ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award\, and in 2007 he earned his Masters from Rutgers University\, focusing on composition. He studied with the likes of Ralph Bowen\, Conrad Herwig and Stanley Cowell. Deeply aware of Philadelphia’s role as a historical nerve center of American music\, Blake has immersed himself in the city’s storied legacy — not just jazz but also soul\, R&B and hip-hop. DESCRIPTION:Renee Rosnes w/ Steve Nelson~vibraphone\, Peter Washington~bass\, & Lewis Nash~drums \nRenee Rosnes is one of the premier jazz pianists and composers of her generation. Rosnes’ already distinguished career continues to reach new levels marked by new music\, exciting collaborations\, and ever-evolving musicianship. Upon moving to New York from Vancouver\, Canada in 1985\, she quickly established a reputation of the highest regard\, touring and recording with such masters as Joe Henderson\, Wayne Shorter\, Bobby Hutcherson\, JJ Johnson\, Buster Williams and James Moody. She was the pianist for the Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra\, and a founding member of the all-star ensemble\, the SFJAZZ Collective\, with whom she toured and recorded for six years. Rosnes is married to jazz pianist Bill Charlap\, and the two often perform in a two-piano setting. The duo was featured on four tracks from the 2015 Grammy award winning album\, Tony Bennett & Bill Charlap: The Silver Lining. Rosnes’ 2016 outing Written in the Rocks (Smoke Sessions) was named one of ten Best Jazz Albums of the Year by The Chicago Tribune\, one of the Best Albums in all genres of music by The Nation\, and a Canadian JUNO Award (her 5th). Her 2021 release\, Kinds of Love (Smoke Sessions) was entirely composed during the pandemic and features saxophonist Chris Potter\, bassist Christian McBride\, drummer Carl Allen\, and the Brazilian percussionist Rogério Boccato. Of the recording\, All About Jazz wrote\, “Rosnes elicits some of the most emotive and enthralling music of her career.” \nSteve Nelson\, an outstanding vibraphonist and composer\, started playing piano and vibes as a teenager and progressed quickly enough as to play with guitar-legend Grant Green. As a resident of the New York area\, he has performed and recorded with many great musicians including Kenny Barron\, Bobby Watson\, Mulgrew Miller\, David Fathead Newman\, Johnny Griffin and Jackie McLean. He is currently a member of The Dave Holland’s Band\, Mulgrew Miller’s Wingspan\, and the Lewis Nash Trio. \nPerhaps the most recorded bassist of his generation\, Peter Washington has also played an integral part in two of the most important and highly praised jazz trios of the last 20 years\, in addition to a “who’s who” roster of jazz artists. In 1986\, while performing in San Francisco with alto saxophonist John Handy\, he was asked by Art Blakey to move to New York and join the seminal Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. In the scope and breadth of his career thus far\, his adaptability\, and in his emphasis on creative\, supportive\, swinging time-playing as well as inventive and intelligent soloing\, Washington has been compared to the likes of George Duvivier\, Milt Hinton\, and Ron Carter. \nUniversally recognized as one of the great drummers in jazz history\, Lewis Nash illustrious career now spans over four decades. Nash is one of jazz’s most recorded musicians\, appearing on over 500 recordings including 10 Grammy winners and numerous Grammy nominees. DESCRIPTION:Born in Mayaguez\, Puerto Rico\, Nestor Torres moved to New York City\, where he pursued Classical flute studies at Mannes School of Music\, Jazz at Berklee College of Music\, and Classical and Jazz at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. During that time he also learned to improvise in the ‘Charanga’ Cuban Dance Music genre\, which helped shape and develop Torres’ unique melodic and danceable style. This rhythmic and mellifluous sound evolution remains apart in a class by itself with 4 Latin Grammy nominations\, one Grammy nomination and one Latin Grammy Award. In addition to 18 solo recordings\, Torres’ unique collaborations with diverse artists such as Gloria Estefan\, Kenny Loggins\, Dave Mathews\, Paquito d’Rivera\, Herbie Hancock\, Arturo Sandoval\, and Tito Puente; as well as performances with the Cleveland\, Singapore\, and New World Symphony Orchestras among many others\, are testament to his remarkable versatility and artistry. 2017 brought two diverse album releases for Torres; the Latin Grammy Nominated – “Jazz Flute Traditions”\, a spectacular tribute to his jazz flute mentors and influences\, and “del Caribe\, soy!”\, a collection of classical compositions by Latin American composers\, including the great Puerto Rican icon Rafael Hernandez\, alongside contemporary works written for Torres by Tania Leon and Miguel del Aguila. This relentless exploration of musical possibilities without boundaries led to a recent concerto commission by Mariano Morales for a world premiere with Torres and The Lynn Philharmonic. DESCRIPTION:Stacey Kent has a legion of jazz fans around the world.  With numerous awards and a Grammy nomination\, her albums have sold in excess of 2 million with Gold\, Double Gold and Platinum albums that have reached No. 1 on the jazz charts multiple times during her career.  Her most recent album\, “Songs from Other Places” (Candid Records) was released in 2022 and her 2021 release\, “I Know the Dream: The Orchestral Sessions” (Okeh/Sony) received five stars in Downbeat\, won “Album of the Year” in the vocal category at the 2017 Jazz Japan Awards. \nHer musical career began in childhood with piano lessons.  After receiving her degree from Sarah Lawrence College in NY\, she found herself in London where she enrolled in a graduate music program at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and where she met her future husband and musical partner\, John Tomlinson.  She paid her dues in the jazz clubs of London\, before releasing a series of six albums for the Candid label. \nHer repertoire includes a growing number of songs written for her by John Tomlinson with various lyricists.  She continues to enjoy an active recording and touring schedule with sold-out concerts and festival appearances worldwide.  Learn more about Stacey at https://staceykent.com
