SUMMARY:BILLY HARPER QUINTET
DESCRIPTION:Billy Harper – tenor saxophone | Freddie Hendrix – trumpet | Francesca Tanksley – piano | Ben Young – bass | Aaron Scott – drums \n“His improvisations are torrential\, dance-like and swinging\, spiraling upward to mountaintop pronouncements that can leave listeners in a sweat.” – The New York Times Tenor saxophonist Billy Harper leads his celebrated quintet with trumpeter Freddie Hendrix\, pianist Francesca Tanksley\, bassist Ben Young\, and drummer Aaron Scott. One of the indispensable saxophonists of the past 50 years stylistically indebted to Trane\, Harper has a distinctive sound and approach that is purely his own. Over the years\, he’s worked with Art Blakey\, Max Roach\, Gil Evans\, Elvin Jones\, Lee Morgan\, and\, most recently\, the Cookers. The San Francisco Chronicle says\, “He is a soul of sensitivity and intelligence\, as well as of explosive\, majestic passion.” “His viscous\, chocolaty tone and depth-charge bursts from the bottom of his range [are] a stark contrast to the current trend for a post-bop homogeneity of tone in the newer generation of saxophone sounds\,” reports JazzWise.

SUMMARY:MONTY ALEXANDER
DESCRIPTION:Monty Alexander O.J.: “Honoring Harry Belafonte” with Luke Sellick & Jason Brown \nFrom Kingston\, Jamaica\, his hometown\, Grammy nominated pianist Monty Alexander is an American classic\, touring the world relentlessly with various projects\, delighting a global audience drawn to his vibrant personality and soulful message. A perennial favorite at Jazz festivals and venues worldwide and at the Montreux Jazz Festival where he has appeared 23 times since 1976\, his spirited conception is one informed by the timeless verities: endless melody-making\, effervescent grooves\, sophisticated voicings\, a romantic spirit\, and a consistent predisposition\, as Alexander accurately states\, “to build up the heat and kick up a storm.” In the course of any given performance\, Alexander applies those aesthetics to a repertoire spanning a broad range of jazz and Jamaican musical expressions—the American songbook and the blues\, gospel and bebop\, calypso and reggae. Documented on more than 75 recordings and cited as the fifth greatest jazz pianist ever in The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time (Hal Leonard Publishing)\, the Jamaican government designated Alexander Commander in the Order of Distinction in 2000 and in 2018 The University of The West Indies bestowed him with an honorary doctorate degree (DLitt) in recognition of his accomplishments. For this engagement\, Monty\, along with bassist Luke Selick and drummer Jason Brown\, commemorates his long friendship with Harry Belafonte\, Jr. in stories and song. \nShowtimes: 7:00pm | 8:30pm | 9:30pm | 10:30pm

SUMMARY:RICHIE GOODS & CHIEN CHIEN: CONNECTED
DESCRIPTION:Richie Goods\, Bass | Chien Chien Lu\, Vibraphone | Matt Wong\, Keys | Tariqh Akoni\, Guitar | Jerome Jennings\, Drums\n\n“CONNECTED” was formed in 2020. During the COVID-19 lockdown\, Richie Goods and Chien Chien had frequent conversations about the Black Lives Matter movement and the unwarranted hate crimes against Asians. They decided to do a project that would unify people and invoke imagery of love and peace. As often happens\, music was the catalyst that bridged the gap and resulted in a rare collaboration; a partnership that produced “The Path” Sep. 2020\, “We Three Kings” Nov. 2020\, and “Rain” Dec. 2021. They decided to cement their musical relationship by creating “CONNECTED”\, their band featuring Miki Hayama on keys\, Quintin Zoto-guitar and Allan Mednard-drums and of course Richie Goods-bass and Chien Chien-vibes. Together\, Richie and Chien Chien are “CONNECTED”\, creating an exciting\, new\, energetic listening experience and attracting new audiences everywhere. Look for their new release\, “Richie Goods & Chien Chien – CONNECTED” due in January\, 2023. RICHIE GOODS – NY bassist Richie Goods\, one of the most versatile and accomplished bass players in the industry and the youngest person ever inducted into the Pittsburgh Jazz Hall of Fame\, came to prominence while touring and recording with the late Mulgrew Miller and credits him for much of his success. Richie went on to make a name for himself through recording and touring with a variety of jazz and popular artists including Sting\, The Headhunters\, Louis Hayes Lenny White\, Milt Jackson\, Whitney Houston\, Lisa Fischer\, The Manhattan Transfer and Christina Aguilera\, Alicia Keys and Common and Chris Botti. He tours the US and internationally extensively\, including notable performances at the Monterrey\, Montreal\, Mendocino\, Atlanta\, Detroit\, San Jose\, Rochester\, and Jakarta Java Jazz Festivals as well as the Punta del Este International Jazz Festival. Richie\, a native Pittsburgher\, studied with such luminaries as Ron Carter and Ray Brown. He received critical acclaim for his multiple recordings\, including his 2019 release “My Left Hand Man”\, recorded with THE GOODS PROJECT\, a self- produced tribute to his mentor Mulgrew Miller\, which spent 36 weeks on the JazzWeek charts in 2020. CHIEN CHIEN – Chien Chien (Lu) is a vibraphonist\, contemporary percussionist\, and composer whose Taiwanese upbringing\, classical music education\, and passion for R&B grooves crystallize into a fresh and distinctive approach to contemporary jazz. Chien Chien’s fierce authenticity and jazz mastery shine bright on her September 2020 debut solo project\, The Path\, which spent 20 weeks on the Jazz Week Charts Top 20\, earned Best Jazz Song in the Golden Indie Music Awards (GIMA)and three Golden Melody Award nominations\, four GIMA nominations and led to her being named the “vibraphone rising star” in Downbeat Magazine’s 69th Annual Critics Poll. Her band has also played many prestigious festivals including the Clifford Brown and DC Jazz Festivals. She also toured extensively in Europe\, Asia\, and the United States. Chien Chien obtained a master’s degree in classical music and jazz. In 2017 she met jazz trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and was invited to join his esteemed quintet where she met and began collaborating with Richie Goods.

SUMMARY:DAMIEN ESCOBAR
DESCRIPTION:Damien Escobar is a world-renowned violinist\, author\, entrepreneur\, and philanthropist\, hailing from Jamaica\, Queens\, and New York. His musical career spans over a decade\, and his inspiring journey of making it big\, losing it all\, fighting to rebuild\, and getting a second chance at success is as much a part of his brand identity as being among the top violinist in the world. \nThe now NAACP Image Award nominee and Billboards chart-topping artist was once humbled by homelessness after calling it quits from his famed group\, “Nuttin but Stringz.” The group\, comprised of Damien and his brother\, Tourie– known in NYC for playing their violins on the subway; gained global recognition when they appeared as contestants on “America’s Got Talent.” The competition helped to catapult the duo into stardom and they quickly experienced all the highs of being the most sought-after musicians of their time. However\, that glory was short-lived and the fall from grace was a hard hit\, to say the very least; as the group disbanded and a bruised Damien made the decision to retire his violin. What came next was a struggle– not only with his identity\, and depression but with finding success in other non-creative endeavors. \nLooking back at his journey\, Damien realizes it all needed to fall apart so he could be forced to grow while putting it back together the right way. Prevailing was a process and it started with unburying his talent– his love of playing the violin. And in 2013 Damien released his first album as a solo artist\, “Sensual Melodies.” Once thought of as a passion project\, the album garnished over 200K downloads; landed on the iTunes Top 100 chart; and served as a springboard for a successful national tour where he headlined\, for the first time\, as the one and only\, Damien Escobar. \nFrom there\, doors that were once closed\, became a little easier to push open; affording Damien opportunities to tell his inspiring story to publications like People Magazine and Huffington Post; make appearances on local and national news including “The Today Show”; serve as a guest on radio broadcasts;  and even accept invitations to perform at notable events such as Oprah Winfrey’s “The Life You Want” tour. Back in the spotlight\, Damien decided this time around he would do more with his visibility and began his entrepreneurial walk by penning and self-publishing his very first children’s book\, “The Sound of Strings”; building his very own line of custom designed violins; and establishing partnerships to develop a wine line\, perfume and fragrances\, and a non-profit organization that would include a music program for children. \nMotivated by his past and grateful for his fans and future\, Damien went on to release his second album\, “Boundless.” Growing into a self-conscious artist with more than a mission to make good music\, Damien sought to inspire change and spread positivity by sharing uplifting messages and telling unfiltered personal stories to sold-out arenas across the world during his second tour. Though he’s achieved more than he could have imagined after pulling himself up by his bootstraps and kick starting his solo career– Damien Escobar’s story isn’t over yet. The breakout artist has partnered with Mitsubishi and is now the face and sound of their latest campaign; he’s releasing new music and videos set to air on major broadcast channels; and\, the world famous violinist\, continues to build his brand centered around making an impact and inspiring social change. Stay tuned\, there’s more to come. \nWith Special Guest Anthony Franks \nParking: $30.00 advanced purchase | $35.00 day of \nValet: $40.00 advanced purchase | $45.00 day of (if not sold out)
