SUMMARY:TAKE 6
DESCRIPTION:Take 6 (Claude McKnight\, Mark Kibble\, Joel Kibble\, Dave Thomas\, Alvin Chea and Khristian Dentley)\, heralded by Quincy Jones as the “baddest vocal cats on the planet!\,” is the quintessential a cappella group and the model for vocal genius. \nWith 10 Grammy Awards\, 10 Dove Awards\, a Soul Train Award\, and they as Members of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame\, this musical phenomenon  has six virtuosic voices united in crystal clear harmony\, against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms\, innovative arrangements\, and funky grooves that bubble into an intoxicating brew of gospel\, jazz\, R&B\, and pop. \nWith collaborations and praise from such luminaries as Ray Charles\, Stevie Wonder\, Brian Wilson\, Ella Fitzgerald and Whitney Houston\, the multi-platinum selling sextet has toured across the globe\, collaborated across genres\, and is recognized as the pre-eminent a cappella group in the world. \nWith their recent appearances including Grammy Honor Paul Simon (set for release soon)releases\, including their upcoming recording tentatively titled A Work Of Art and most recent recording ICONIC\, TAKE 6 emerged on seven (7) Billboard Charts simultaneously and have seen their music played all over the country in various formats!  This April 2022\, the legendary group took to Capitol Hill for Grammys On The Hill to advocate for musicians rights and work. \nWith the popularity of televised vocal competitions such as the explosive a cappella show The Sing Off and the mania over singing driven comedy-dramas like Glee and Smash\, Take 6 is the original torchbearer. Major public and corporate events remind everyone of this as Take 6 has triumphed among a gathering of stars including Celine Dion\, Lionel Richie\, Justin Timberlake\, Stevie Nicks\, and Ne-Yo at Walmart’s 50th Anniversary celebration; a SOLD-OUT audience and Standing Ovation at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards where Take 6 captivated the audience with their rendition\, performing with and honoring legendary singer-songwriter Ben E. King\, on his classic “Stand By Me.” \nTake 6 has come a long way from their days at Huntsville\, Alabama’s Oakwood College where McKnight formed the group as The Gentleman’s Estate Quartet in 1980. The group eventually became known as Alliance but when they signed to Reprise Records in 1987 they found that there was another group with the same name\, so they became Take 6. Their self-titled debut CD won over jazz and pop critics and they’ve never slowed down. \nWhat makes the music and the group last this long? The answers are direct and simple: faith\, friendship\, respect\, and love of music. From their exceptional Christmas Show\, to their innovative Symphony show\, these qualities are at the heart of the Take 6 phenomenon. \nKeystone Kards will not be accepted for this show. \nShowtimes ~ 7:00pm | 9:30pm \nStream @ 7:00pm Only | $10.00

SUMMARY:SAMARA JOY
DESCRIPTION:With her upcoming Verve Records debut\, Linger Awhile\, 22-year-old Samara Joy makes her case to join the likes of Sarah\, Ella\, and Billie as the next mononymous jazz singing sensation recorded by the venerable label. Her voice\, rich and velvety yet precociously refined\, has already earned her fans like Anita Baker and Regina King\, appearances on the TODAY Show and millions of likes on TikTok — cementing her status as perhaps the first Gen Z jazz singing star. On Linger Awhile\, Samara will introduce that massive audience to a slew of classic standards several times older than she is through her timeless\, irresistible sound. \nSamara is still relatively new to jazz. Growing up in the Bronx\, it was music of the past — the music of her parent’s childhoods\, as she put it — that she listened to most. She treasures her musical lineage\, which stretches back to her grandparents Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon\, both of whom performed with Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and runs through her father\, who is a singer\, songwriter and producer who toured with gospel artist Andraé Crouch. “Sometimes I catch myself when I’m singing — I’m like\, ‘Whoa\, that was a dad moment’\,” Samara quips. Eventually\, she did follow in the family tradition\, singing in church and then with the jazz band at Fordham High School for the Arts\, with whom she won Best Vocalist at JALC’s Essentially Ellington competition. That led to her enrolling in SUNY Purchase’s jazz studies program\, where she fell deeply in love with the music. \nThough she’s young\, she relishes the process of digging through the music’s history and learning new standards. “I think maybe people connect with the fact that I’m not faking it\, that I already feel embedded in it\,” Samara says. “Maybe I’m able to reach people in person and on social media because it’s real.” The gatekeepers of the jazz world tend to agree: in 2019\, she won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, and she’s since performed with legends like Christian McBride and Bill Charlap. Legendary late pianist Barry Harris was a particularly important influence and mentor. “You inspired me as well as many others with this fire for teaching and playing that couldn’t be dimmed by anything or anyone\,” Samara writes in Linger Awhile’s liner notes\, dedicating the project in part to Harris’ memory. \nSamara is accompanied by esteemed veterans on Linger Awhile as well: her former professors\, guitarist Pasquale Grasso and drummer Kenny Washington\, form the core of the band\, which also includes bassist David Wong and pianist Ben Paterson. With ease and a preternatural assurance\, Samara swings right alongside them through understated yet powerful renditions of this creative collection of standards. \nThe 8:00pm shows both evenings are SOLD OUT!!!

SUMMARY:LOUIS HAYES QUINTET
DESCRIPTION:The Louis Hayes Quintet With Steve Nelson~vibraphone\, Abraham Burton~tenor saxophone\, Allyn Johnson~piano & Gerald Cannon~bass \nFor more than forty years\, drummer and NEA Jazz Master Louis Hayes has been a catalyst for energetic\, unrelenting swing in his self led bands\, as well as in those whose respective leaders reads like an encyclopedia of straight ahead post-bop modern jazz. His iconic jazz drumming style graced and elevated the music of Cannonball Adderley\, Horace Silver\, John Coltrane\, Oscar Peterson\, & countless others. \nHayes himself an authentic architect of post-bop swing\, began his professional activities at the tender age of 18. He started with tenor saxophonist\, flautist and oboist Yusef Lateef who like Hayes is a Detroit native. After the stint with Lateef\, Hayes went on to rhythmically propel groups led by pianist Horace Silver\, legendary saxophonist Cannonball Adderley and pianist Oscar Peterson. These positions were augmented by countless recordings on the Blue Note\, Prestige\, Riverside and other labels with the likes of John Coltrane\, Sonny Rollins\, J.J. Johnson\, Jackie McLean\, Wes Montgomery\, Cedar Walton\, Dexter Gordon\, Woody Shaw\, George Benson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Joe Henderson\, McCoy Tyner and the list goes on. \nFor the last twenty-plus years\, Louis has led or co-led some of the most uncompromisingly swinging groups in all of jazz. SUMMARY:LESLIE CARTAYA
DESCRIPTION:Cuban singer-songwriter Leslie Cartaya carries the rhythms of her land in her blood\, as well as the influence of American jazz and funk\, which has shaped her artistic personality. Dubbed “La Princesa del Son\,” Cartaya debuted as a soloist with the 2012 album No Pares\, on which Caribbean\, Afro-American\, Afro-Cuban and Latin American rhythms fuse together. In 2013\, she was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Her philosophy is that no dream is impossible\, and she feels blessed to have sung alongside greats such Luis Enrique\, Marisela Verena\, Larry Harlow\, Ed Calle and Steve Roitstein. The Miami Herald wrote that “Leslie Cartaya no para” — Leslie doesn’t stop. \nLa canta/autora cubano americana Leslie Cartaya lleva en su sangre los ritmos de su tierra\, y a la vez\, la influencia del jazz y el funk americano que han moldeado su personalidad artística para alcanzar su propio estilo.
