SUMMARY:EDDIE HENDERSON
DESCRIPTION:Eddie Henderson – trumpet\nDonald Harrison – alto saxophone\nKevin Hays – piano\nGerald Cannon – bass\nMike Clark – drums \nTrumpeter Eddie Henderson leads an inspired quintet of trusted collaborators featuring saxophonist Donald Harrison\, pianist Kevin Hays\, bassist Gerald Cannon\, and drummer Mike Clark. Henderson’s “deft feel and plush sound made him a central figure in the worlds of jazz- funk and hard-bop in the 1970s” according to The New York Times. More recently\, the eternally youthful Henderson\, has made a series of recordings that have also been widely acclaimed and prove that he is still making some of the most important music of his career into his 80s. The Chicago Reader adds\, “His progressive\, assured\, and imaginative improvisations roll out in a glorious sun-splashed tone… he seems to dance through his solos\, balancing his quick clockwork technique with bursts of bluesy soul.” \nLiveStream: $15.00 + fees

SUMMARY:CYNTHIA SCOTT & HOUSTON PERSON
DESCRIPTION:Cynthia Scott – vocals\nHouston Person – tenor saxophone\nJeb Patton – piano\nRussell Hall – bass\nWillie Jones III – drums \nCynthia Scott\, a soulful\, Grammy-nominated vocalist\, leads a swinging quintet featuring the legendary tenor saxophonist Houston Person. Scott worked with Ray Charles as a Raelette before launching her successful solo career and subsequently performing with Hank Crawford\, David “Fathead” Newman\, Wynton Marsalis\, Harry Connick Jr.\, and many others. JazzTimes says Scott blends “the sinewy grit of Gladys Knight and the sophisticated sass of Shirley Horn” with “nods to such idols as Carmen\, Ella\, Sarah\, and Dinah.” The Chicago Tribune called her “a mesmerizing vocalist.” Houston Person is the very special guest with this quintet and All About Jazz says\, “Whatever imponderable talent it takes to stay at the top of one’s game for almost six decades\, as Person has\, he still has it in abundance.” \n

SUMMARY:IMMANUEL WILKINS
DESCRIPTION:The music of saxophonist and composer Immanuel Wilkins is filled with empathy and conviction\, bonding arcs of melody and lamentation to pluming gestures of space and breath. Listeners were introduced to this riveting sound with his acclaimed debut album Omega\, which was named the #1 Jazz Album of 2020 by The New York Times. The album also introduced his remarkable quartet with Micah Thomas on piano\, Daryl Johns on bass\, and Kweku Sumbry on drums\, a tight-knit unit that Wilkins features once again on his stunning sophomore album The 7th Hand. \nThe 7th Hand explores relationships between presence and nothingness across an hour-long suite comprised of seven movements. “I wanted to write a preparatory piece for my quartet to become vessels by the end of the piece\, fully\,” says the Brooklyn-based\, Philadelphia-raised artist who Pitchfork said “composes ocean-deep jazz epics.” \nConceptually\, the record evolves what Wilkins begins exploring on Omega\, which included a four-part suite within the album. On The 7th Hand\, all his compositions represent movements\, played in succession. “They deal with cells and source material like a suite would\,” says Wilkins\, “but they function as songs\, as well.” \nWhile writing\, Wilkins began viewing each movement as a gesture bringing his quartet closer to complete vesselhood\, where the music would be entirely improvised\, channeled collectively. “It’s the idea of being a conduit for the music as a higher power that actually influences what we’re playing\,” he says. The 7th Hand derives its title from a question steeped in Biblical symbolism: If the number 6 represents the extent of human possibility\, Wilkins wondered what it would mean — how it would sound — to invoke divine intervention and allow that seventh element to possess his quartet. \nWilkins often draws inspiration from critical thought. Even the striking album artwork challenges convention: “I wanted to remix the Southern Black baptism\, and also provide critique on what is considered sanctified and who can be baptized.”

SUMMARY:STANLEY CLARK *N* 4EVER
DESCRIPTION:Stanley Clark is a four-time Grammy Award-winning recording artist\, performer\, composer\, conductor\, arranger\, producer\, a composer for recordings and film\, as well as one of the most celebrated acoustic and electric bass players in the world. Known for his musicality\, dexterity\, and ferocity on the acoustic and electric bass\, Clarke was the first jazz fusion bassist to headline tours\, selling out performances around the world. Clarke and Corea formed the legendary cutting-edge jazz-rock fusion band Return to Forever\, and during that time Clarke developed an entirely new way of playing the bass\, liberating it from the rhythm section to become a lead instrument. His creativity has been recognized and rewarded in every way imaginable. In 2022\, Clarke was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts\, and in 2011 he received the highly prestigious Miles Davis Award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in recognition of his body of work. \n4EVER’s band members bring dynamic youthful energy and freshness to the music. Authenticity and uniquity assume the locus of Mijiga’s artistic identity. Self-expression is the prime directive\, and the medium of choice changes like the weather.

SUMMARY:MARY STALLINGS
DESCRIPTION:Mary Stallings is a classic example of how it takes time\, musical seasoning and living a full life to mature as a vocalist and to address a lyric properly. While youthful instrumentalists may have something to say\, Stallings brings a lifetime of emotional intelligence that enables her to truly inhabit a lyric. \n“Mary Stallings is an American jazz vocalist. One of the most gifted\, swinging vocalists in jazz\, she spent decades as a local San Francisco legend before reestablishing her national profile in the mid-1990s. Her voice\, sturdy and non~virtuosic\, has a rich low end; its clearest template is Dinah Washington. And above all it’s a jazz voice\, not an R&B voice; she’s for real.” — New York Times  \n\n\n\n\nTHE 222 is a small intimate venue. SUMMARY:ITAMAR BOROCHOV QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:Itamar Borochov\, Trumpet/Effects/Vocals\nRob Clearfield\, Piano/Effects\nSam Weber\, Bass\nJay Sawyer\, Drums\n\nRaised in the cosmopolitan port city of Jaffa\, now a significant presence on the international jazz scene\, Borochov is creating a new musical hybrid – bringing the sacred sounds of his upbringing to a jazz quartet setting. His third release Blue Nights (Laborie Jazz 2019) is a nine-track multi-cultural joyride of enchanting lyricism\, exotic motifs\, anthemic builds and virtuosic expression. Borochov first heard Sephardic music in his local synagogue and absorbed these ‘maqams’ (modes) of the greater Middle East and North Africa alongside a range of other musical influences\, including the Mizrahi and Ashkenazi musical flavors that are his birthright. He began playing trumpet at the age of eleven and immersed himself in the discovery of jazz\, inspired by the jazz trumpet lineage of Louis Armstrong\, Clark Terry\, Miles Davis\, Kenny Dorham\, Lee Morgan\, and Booker Little through to Wynton Marsalis\, and citing the influence of Ben Webster for his assured yet wistful warm airy tone.\n\nIn 2007 Borochov relocated to New York to study at the New School and attend Barry Harris’s weekly workshops. His deep knowledge of these various musical disciplines is incorporated organically into his original jazz writing\, building a bridge between the near-East and the modal styles of Miles Davis\, John Coltrane and others. “This synergetic quest is accomplished with great integrity\, demonstrating in-depth knowledge only possible from one who has experienced these traditions firsthand.” – Jazz Magazine In addition to recording three albums as a leader\, Borochov also appears on three albums with Yemen Blues\, of which he was a founding member\, arranger and co-producer. He has toured across four continents and performed at prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center\, The Kennedy Center\, SummerStage at Central Park\, Blue Note NY\, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club\, Bimhuis\, Flagey and international festivals including Roskilde\, Vitoria\, Lviv\, Montreal & Ottawa Jazz Festivals\, London Jazz Festival\, Moscow Jazz Festival\, Tel Aviv & Red Sea Jazz Festivals\, Jazz à Liège & Shanghai World Music Festival.\n\nThe Itamar Borochov Quartet was chosen to showcase at WOMEX 2019 in Tampere\, Finland. In 2021 Borochov was commissioned by Brazos Valley Symphony\, Texas to compose a suite for jazz quartet and string orchestra – ‘Emergence’\, which he first performed with the orchestra in June 2021. He also recorded a new work composed especially for him by Shanan Estreicher – ‘All You Shining Stars’ for improvised trumpet and string septet\, which premiered online in February. Borochov won the prestigious 2020 LetterOne ‘Rising Stars’ Jazz Award European edition\, which was presented to him in February 2021 by vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater. He returned to the studio in New York in 2022 with his quartet and producer Matt Pierson to record his fourth album\, due for release in 2023. “His melodies are direct and often plangent\, his harmonies and rhythms sturdy and repetitious.\n\nShowtimes ~ 7:00pm | 9:00pm

SUMMARY:KEVIN BALES QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:By some measures\, Kevin Bales was a latecomer to jazz\, already 17 when he encountered the sounds and structures and became captivated by the freedom and corresponding challenges of the music. But if late to the party\, he wasted no time in immersing himself in the celebration\, declaring total commitment to what would be his life’s work and backing his announcement by resigning his job and designated career in computer programming. Kevin could commit to jazz with a reasonable degree of expectation. He was already an accomplished pianist\, with classical chops refined since the age of 10. So accomplished he was invited to audition for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra\, then under the direction of its most storied conductor Robert Shaw\, at age 16. \nKevin’s initial career move was to the University of North Florida and a budding if little-known jazz program. There he met and performed with\, and went on to record and tour with\, a number of monumental artists who had settled into that burgeoning North Florida jazz scene. Giants like Wynton Marsalis\, Louie Bellson\, Eddie Daniels\, James Moody\, Ben Tucker\, Ira Sullivan\, Sam Rivers\, and Nat Adderley. He counts among his mentors bassist Ben Tucker\, multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan\, guitar legends Nathen Page and Jack Petersen\, and the fiercely individual saxophonist Bunky Green. His meeting with Bunky Green led to five years of tours. His encounter with guitarist Nathen Page blossomed into 15 years of spot tours and four albums. And his work with trumpeter extraordinaire Marcus Printup has become a lifetime association that has included recordings on Blue Note/Capital records. Ten years touring and recording with vocal iconoclast Rene Marie culminated in a Grammy Nominated album. His most recent recording of music composed by Fred Rogers was selected as one of the top 10 albums of 2018 by Cadence Magazine and AllAboutJazz.com \nFew artists have the patience for teaching – as are few teachers accomplished players. But Kevin has amassed a reputation for his prowess in both professions. While still a senior at North Florida he was drafted into a full teaching load\, and continued to be an integral part of the school’s jazz program for upwards of a decade. SUMMARY:MONTY ALEXANDER ~ MEMORIES OF LEFT BANK SOCIETY
DESCRIPTION:Monty Alexander ~ piano\, Luke Sellick ~ bass\, Jason Brown ~ drums \nMonty Alexander will help us celebrate the swinging musical memories of the iconic Baltimore jazz venue\, the left bank jazz society! The Left Bank Jazz Society was a Baltimore\, Maryland-based organization and music venue. It formed in 1964\, hosting a series of concerts featuring nationally acclaimed performers like John Coltrane and Duke Ellington. \nNearly sixty years after he moved to the United States from Kingston\, Jamaica\, his hometown\, Grammy nominated pianist Monty Alexander is an American classic\, touring the world relentlessly with various projects\, delighting a global audience drawn to his vibrant personality and soulful message. A perennial favorite at Jazz festivals and venues worldwide and at the Montreux Jazz Festival where he has appeared 23 times since 1976\, his spirited conception is one informed by the timeless verities: endless melody-making\, effervescent grooves\, sophisticated voicings\, a romantic spirit\, and a consistent predisposition\, as Alexander accurately states\, “to build up the heat and kick up a storm.” In the course of any given performance\, Alexander applies those aesthetics to a repertoire spanning a broad range of jazz and Jamaican musical expressions—the American songbook and the blues\, gospel and bebop\, calypso and reggae. Documented on more than 75 recordings and cited as the fifth greatest jazz pianist ever in The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time (Hal Leonard Publishing)\, the Jamaican government designated Alexander Commander in the Order of Distinction in 2000 and conferred on him the national honor of the Order of Jamaica in 2022 for “Sterling Contributions to the Promotions of Jamaican Music and the Jazz Genre Interpretations Globally”. In 2018 the University of The West Indies bestowed him with an honorary doctorate degree (DLitt) in recognition of his accomplishments. \nFriday 3/17 ~ 7:00 pm  & 9:30 pm | $35~$45 + fee \nSaturday 3/18 ~ 7:00 pm  & 9:30 pm | $35~$45 + fee \nSunday 3/19 5:00 pm & 7:30 pm  | $35~$45 + fee \nStreaming Pass: 5:00pm & 7:00pm only | $10.00 + fee

SUMMARY:JOHNATHAN BLAKE
DESCRIPTION:Johnathan Blake\, one of the most accomplished drummers of his generation\, has also proven himself a complete and endlessly versatile musician. Blake’s gift for composition and band leading reflects years of live and studio experience across the aesthetic spectrum. Heralded by NPR Music as “the ultimate modernist\,” he has collaborated with Pharoah Sanders\, Ravi Coltrane\, Tom Harrell\, Hans Glawischnig\, Avishai Cohen\, Donny McCaslin\, Linda May Han Oh\, Jaleel Shaw\, Chris Potter\, Maria Schneider\, Alex Sipiagin\, Kris Davis and countless other distinctive voices. DownBeat once wrote\, “It’s a testament to Blake’s abilities that he makes his presence felt in any context.” A frequent presence on Blue Note records over the past several years\, Blake has contributed his strong\, limber pulse and airy precision to multiple leader releases from Blue Note artists including Dr. Lonnie Smith’s Breathe (2021)\, All in My Mind (2018) and Evolution (2016) and Kenny Barron’s Concentric Circles (2018)\, the latter whose trio Blake has been a vital member for nearly 15 years. \nBorn in Philadelphia in 1976\, Blake is the son of renowned jazz violinist John Blake\, Jr. — himself a stylistic chameleon and an important ongoing influence. After beginning on drums at age 10\, Johnathan gained his first performing experience with the Lovett Hines Youth Ensemble\, led by the renowned Philly jazz educator. It was during this period\, at Hines’s urging\, that Blake began to compose his own music. Later he worked with saxophonist Robert Landham in a youth jazz ensemble at Settlement Music School. Blake graduated from George Washington High School and went on to attend the highly respected jazz program at William Paterson University\, where he studied with Rufus Reid\, John Riley\, Steve Wilson and Horace Arnold. At this time Blake also began working professionally with the Oliver Lake Big Band\, Roy Hargrove and David Sanchez. In 2006 he was recognized with an ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award\, and in 2007 he earned his Masters from Rutgers University\, focusing on composition. He studied with the likes of Ralph Bowen\, Conrad Herwig and Stanley Cowell. Deeply aware of Philadelphia’s role as a historical nerve center of American music\, Blake has immersed himself in the city’s storied legacy — not just jazz but also soul\, R&B and hip-hop. In many ways he’s an heir to Philadelphia drum masters such as Philly Joe Jones\, Bobby Durham\, Mickey Roker and Edgar Bateman\, not to mention younger mentors including Byron Landham\, Leon Jordan and Ralph Peterson\, Jr.. \nFridays at 7pm & 8:30pm – Running time for each set is 90 minutes \nReserved Seating – $20 \nAll Access Ticket – $35 \nPremium Reserved Velvet Couch/Chair – $38 \nBlue Velvet Loveseat for 2 – $50 \nDinner & A Show – $55 – updated prix fixe menu here \n$15 food and beverage minimum – Full menu can be found here!
