SUMMARY:CONNIE HAN
DESCRIPTION:Pianist and provocateur Connie Han has created an edgy blend of modern and traditional jazz with her incendiary Mack Avenue Records debut CRIME ZONE. At 26\, this young lioness is on a fast-climbing trajectory to jazz stardom with rave reviews from The New York Times\, Jazziz Magazine\, Downbeat Magazine\, and more. According to Downbeat Magazine\, Han has “already absorbed the post-bop piano masters” with “all the technical mastery she’ll ever need.” The New York Times describes her as “the rare musician with fearsome technical chops\, a breadth of historical knowledge and enough originality to write tunes that absorb your ear easily.” Weaving in and out of the tradition\, Han pays tribute to McCoy Tyner\, Mulgrew Miller\, and Kenny Kirkland with her own unique edge and fire at the piano. \nHer connection to jazz began at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. After graduation\, Han accepted a full-tuition scholarship to UCLA but chose to leave school after three weeks to pursue her professional career. It was at this time she sought out drummer/producer Bill Wysaske to begin work on what would eventually culminate her signing with Mack Avenue Records. \n“This record is meant to be a statement about being rebellious… but within the tradition\,” Han explains. “It’s provocative and fresh in its own way while still honoring the rich legacy of jazz.” The title\, CRIME ZONE\, reinforces how I brand myself as an artist: a provocateur of creative music.” “With this album she’s booking a place as a star in the jazz firmament of tomorrow\,” says All About Jazz.” Watch out for Connie Han\, the face (and shape) of jazz to come.” \n\nDoors at 6:00 PM\, Show at 7:00 PM | Doors at 8:45 PM\, Show at 9:15 PM

SUMMARY:JOHN PIZZARELLI
DESCRIPTION:John Pizzarelli\, the world-renowned jazz guitarist and singer\, was called “Hip with a wink” by Town & Country\, “madly creative” by the Los Angeles Times and “the genial genius of the guitar” by The Toronto Star. After his recent smash success with the Boston Pops\, he was hailed by the Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz.” And the Seattle Times called him “a tour de force” and “a rare entertainer of the old school.” \nUsing performers like Nat “King” Cole\, Frank Sinatra and Joao Gilberto and the songs of composers from Richard Rodgers\, George Gershwin to James Taylor\, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon & McCartney as touchstones\, John Pizzarelli has established himself as one of the prime interpreters of the Great American Songbook and beyond\, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing and singing. For Pizzarelli though\, his hero and foundation was Nat “King” Cole and the comparison to his iconic trio is the highest of compliments. “I’ve always said in my concerts that Nat ‘King’ Cole is why I do what I do.” But Pizzarelli adds\, “We aren’t trying to copy him. His sound was singular and inspired. I’ve always said we’re an extension\, a 21st century version of what that group was.” \nShowtimes: \n7:00 pm | Thurs\, Sun~$40.00\, Fri\, Sat~$50 \n9:00 pm | Thurs\, Sun~$20.00\, Fri\, Sat~$50 \n$15 food/beverage minimum per person not included in ticket price.

SUMMARY:TONY HIGHTOWER
DESCRIPTION:Singer/Songwriter Tony Hightower is taking up the mantle to be a bridge that ushers R&B audiences into Jazz…Real Jazz. With years of experience as a musical performer and actor with familiar roots that place him firmly within the music’s firmament\, Atlanta-native Hightower is still just getting started on this benevolent turn in his journey. And he is bringing a lot of young people with him. \nHis sophomore project\, LEGACY\, finds Hightower exploring Jazz vocal stylings from a dazzling prism of angles. The 10-song album moves confidently and assuredly from original compositions such as the soulful scat-laced “All to the Good\,” the seductive Brazilian bossa nova of “Rendezvous” and the tender carnal Jarreau-esque love beg “I Need You” to swingin’ covers of Earth\, Wind & Fire’s classic Skip Scarborough-penned “Can’t Hide Love\,” a mean shuffle boogie groove through Al Green’s “Love and Happiness” and a smoldering upright bass accompanied tiptoe through the 1929 Andy Razaf standard “Gee\, Baby\, Ain’t I Good To You” made further famous in 1944 by one of Hightower’s greatest and earliest Jazz vocal heroes\, Nat “King” Cole. That one’ll make the women wiggle.

SUMMARY:JOSE JAMES
DESCRIPTION:Often referred to as a jazz singer for the hip-hop generation\, New York City-based vocalist José James combines jazz\, soul\, drum’n’bass\, and spoken word into his own unique brand of vocal jazz. While he states his main influences as John Coltrane\, Marvin Gaye\, and Billie Holiday\, his sound on early 12″ singles and in live performances brought to mind such icons of ’70s jazz-soul as Terry Callier\, and his music felt more like an update of the fluid crossover approach of Gil Scott-Heron\, while also being distinctly his own. \n

SUMMARY:JOEY ALEXANDER
DESCRIPTION:It’s no coincidence two of the titles on pianist\, bandleader and composer Joey Alexander’s inspirational debut on Mack Avenue Records\, Origin\, contain the words “rise” and “rising.” \n“The Latin root of the word ‘origin’ is orire\, which means to rise\,” explains the restlessly searching musician\, who has performed everywhere from the Obama White House to the Grand Ole Opry and has been nominated for three GRAMMY® awards. “During this pandemic\, I think the first thing we should do is to start with being hopeful\, which is the main theme of Origin. Instead of making it a source of frustration\, I made it the source of inspiration to express myself in music.” \nGood plan. On his sixth album as a leader\, his first featuring all his own material\, Alexander has stretched his imagination into new territory\, challenging himself to write rich melodic and harmonic interplay without ever abandoning the emotional candor and transparency that have captivated crowds and catapulted his albums to the top of the jazz charts. \nShowtimes: December 2 & 3 \nDoors at 6:00 PM\, Show at 7:00 PM | Doors at 8:45 PM\, Show at 9:15 PM

SUMMARY:JANE MONHEIT
DESCRIPTION:Blessed with “a voice of phenomenal beauty” (Stephen Holden\, New York Times)\, Jane Monheit has had plenty of milestone moments in establishing herself as one of today’s best and most important vocalist-musicians. \nWith her new album\, The Songbook Sessions: Ella Fitzgerald—the first to be released on her own Emerald City Records—the Long Island native has surprised even herself with her artistic leap. Jane had thought about recording an Ella tribute for a long time. Fitzgerald’s beloved songbook albums held “Biblical” importance for her when she was growing up andhave never lost their hold on her. \nOn this new offering\, Monheit pays joyous tribute to Ella while sharing a definitive portrait of herself\, guided by her producer\, arranger\, and trumpet great\, Nicholas Payton. Once she decided to make the dream project a reality\, she had no trouble choosing titles. She jotted down a list of 25 titles “almost immediately.” She and Payton each narrowed the choices to a dozen and settled on the final list together. \nShowtimes: \n7:00 pm | Thurs\, Sun~$45.00\, Fri\, Sat~$50 \n9:00 pm | Thurs\, Sun~$45.00\, Fri\, Sat~$50 \n$15 food/beverage minimum per person not included in ticket price.
