SUMMARY:LISA FISCHER
DESCRIPTION:After four decades of featured background singing with icons like Luther Vandross\, The Rolling Stones\, Chaka Khan\, Tina Turner\, and Nine Inch Nails\, Ms. Lisa Fischer set out to take center stage with her own humble\, heartfelt song. The 2013 Best Documentary Oscar winning film “Twenty Feet from Stardom” altered the course of Lisa’s musical journey\, telling her story\, with clips of her legendary duets with Sting or with Mick Jagger on “Gimme Shelter”\, left audiences eager to see and hear more\, so Lisa took the chance to set out on her own reinventing classic songs with her co-conspirators JC Maillard and Grand Baton. Their organic fusion of Caribbean psychedelic soul and jazzy progressive rock ignited Lisa’s flexibility and freedom of expression\, awakening her lifelong desire to make music that heals but still rocks the house. \nWhile Lisa’s range is legendary\, her greatest gift is the ability to connect\, to reach the hearts of her listeners. Raised in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn\, she emerged from New York’s fervent studio scene in the early 1980s\, sang for two decades with legendary vocalist Luther Vandross\, and released “So Intense”\, earning her first Best R&B Performance Grammy with “How Can I Ease The Pain”. She joined the Rolling Stones for their 1989 Steel Wheels tour\, and continued to grace their stage for the next 26 years. Lisa’s passion for constant growth and experimentation with different styles invited recent collaborations with jazz pianist Taylor Eigsti\, Sting\, Bruce Springsteen\, Michael McDonald\, Eric Krasno\, Talib Kweli\, Billy Childs and YoYo Ma\, the BBC Proms / Jules Buckley and the Metropole Orkest\, Alonzo King LINES Ballet\, Anna Deavere Smith’s “Notes from the Field” for HBO\, and especially her full evening program The Classic Lisa Fischer with Grand Baton and Seattle Symphony\, Cincinnati Symphony and the National Philharmonic. \nThe Band:\nLisa Fischer: Vocal\nOrrin Evans: Piano\nJames Genus: Bass\nMark Whitfield Jr.: Drums \nCover: $49.43 ~ $66.32 | Fees Included\nFood/Beverage Per Person: $20.00 Minimum

SUMMARY:VANESSA RUBIN
DESCRIPTION:Revered as both a torchbearer and a storyteller\, jazz vocalist Vanessa Rubin possesses a voice hailed for crystalline clarity\, hearth-like warmth and playful lioness sass. The Cleveland native brings a wealth of diverse influences to her vocal performance from both the Trinidadian/Caribbean roots of her mother and traditional jazz by way of her Louisiana-born father. Additional homespun influences include the melodic bell tone clarity of a young Capital Records recording artist\, Nancy Wilson\, the fire of Lambert\, Hendricks & Ross\, the sweet sounds of trumpeter Blue Mitchell as well as her love of the Motown Sound…especially girl groups like the Supremes. \nThe Trio\nVanessa Rubin – vocals\nCliff Barnes – organ\nDavid Throckmorton – drums \nCover: $20.00 ~ $50.00 | Call For Reservations

SUMMARY:HENDRIK MEURKENS
DESCRIPTION:One of the most unique and captivating voices in jazz brings his quartet to The Side Door. Hendrik Meurkens is a virtuoso on both the chromatic harmonica and the vibraphone and is widely regarded as the most important jazz harmonica player since Toots Thielemans. Born in Hamburg and now based in New York\, his path to musical mastery is one of jazz’s most extraordinary stories. As a teenager\, a Benny Goodman record with Lionel Hampton lit the fuse — he had to play vibraphone. Then\, at nineteen\, he heard Toots Thielemans for the first time and knew he had to play harmonica too. He perfected his unique musical voice at Berklee as a vibraphone major\, then moved to Rio de Janeiro in the early 1980s to immerse himself completely in the music and culture of Brazil. \nHis poignant\, emotionally affecting harmonica proved to be a sound that Brazilians strongly embraced\, and that deep love of Brazilian music \, samba\, bossa nova\, choro\, has never left him\, infusing everything he plays with a warmth and rhythmic vitality that is entirely his own. Back in Germany by 1983\, he became a respected studio musician\, recording with European Radio Orchestras and accompanying visiting legends like Harry “Sweets” Edison and Buddy Tate. He then moved to New York on an exclusive contract with Concord Records and has since released over fifteen acclaimed albums as a leader\, performing at festivals and clubs around the world. \nThe Band\nHendrik Meurkens – Harmonica & Vibraphone\nSteve Ash – Piano\nJoe Fitzgerald – Bass\nBen Bilello – Drums \nCover: $27.98

SUMMARY:BENITO GONZALEZ TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Two-time Grammy nominee Benito Gonzalez is joined by legends Buster Williams and Lenny White. \nBorn in Maracaibo\, Venezuela\, Benito Gonzalez grew up immersed in traditional Venezuelan folk music before discovering jazz through the playing of Herbie Hancock\, McCoy Tyner\, Chick Corea\, and Keith Jarrett\, an early inspiration that shaped his powerful\, Afro-Latin-infused approach to the piano. Gonzalez made his way to the United States by a serendipitous route\, an American cultural ambassador caught one of his trio gigs and later invited him to Washington\, D.C. \nHe went on to play with Jackie McLean in 2003\, then spent nearly seven years touring with Kenny Garrett’s quartet\, earning two Grammy nominations for the recordings Seeds from the Underground and Pushing the World Away. In 2019 he joined NEA Jazz Master and Coltrane protégé Pharoah Sanders as pianist and musical director. A 2005 winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition and a Steinway artist since 2020\, Gonzalez has shared the stage with Dave Liebman\, Roy Hargrove\, Christian McBride\, Nicholas Payton\, Al Foster\, and many others. \nJoining him are two of the most legendary rhythm section players in jazz history. Bassist Buster Williams has anchored some of the most important recordings and bands of the past six decades\, from Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis to McCoy Tyner and Ron Carter\, and remains one of the most revered bassists in the music. Drummer Lenny White\, a member of the original lineup of Return to Forever and a Grammy-winning legend in his own right\, brings a depth of groove and history matched by few. Together\, this trio represents three generations of jazz mastery converging in one room. \nThe Band:\nBenito Gonzalez – Piano\nBuster Williams – Bass\nLenny White – Drums \nCover: $38.57

SUMMARY:JOE GRANSDEN & NOEL FRIEDLINE TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Tony Bennett’s life and legacy embody the absolute pinnacle of the Great American Story. As we honor the centennial milestone of his birth\, his unprecedented career as the pre-eminent singer of the 20th and 21st centuries continues to embrace and inspire audiences across all generations. \nThrough his unyielding dedication to artistic excellence\, Bennett became the ultimate “keeper of the flame\,” extolling the timeless values of the Great American Songbook. Yet his impact reached far beyond the stage; he consistently stood on the front lines of modern history. A World War II veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge\, Bennett went on to perform for eleven U.S. Presidents and marched side-by-side with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma. A lifelong pacifist and proactive humanitarian\, his commitment to justice bridged cultural divides by highlighting our shared humanity. This special centennial tribute celebrates a visionary artist who achieved the American Dream without ever forgetting his roots—leaving behind a profound blueprint of dedication\, courage\, and compassion. \nGuided by Duke Ellington’s advice ~ “Number one\, never give up. Number two\, remember number one!” ~ jazz vocalist Antonia Bennett has spent her life honoring the Great American Songbook. The youngest daughter of legendary artist Tony Bennett and actress Sandra Grant Bennett\, Antonia grew up in Los Angeles and began singing with her father at age four\, surrounded by icons like Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. Her early passion led her to Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. \nBy the mid-2000s\, Antonia was officially performing as her father’s opening act at renowned venues worldwide\, including Radio City Music Hall\, the Hollywood Bowl\, and London’s Royal Albert Hall. Her distinct voice—which The New York Times describes as a mix of “Billie Holiday and Rickie Lee Jones\, with a hint of Betty Boop”—shines on her acclaimed releases Natural and Embrace Me. From recording “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm” with her father to capturing critics’ attention with her own swinging standards\, Antonia continues to tour the world\, effortlessly bridging her father’s incredible musical legacy with her own contemporary jazz artistry. \nCover: $54.15 ~ $66.15

SUMMARY:NAT REEVES SEXTET
DESCRIPTION:Nat Reeves brings his sextet to The Side Door\, the same all-star group from his new album Now in Time. For over 40 years\, Nat Reeves has been one of the most respected bassists in jazz. Early in his career he performed with Jackie McLean\, Benny Golson\, Donald Byrd\, Art Taylor\, Mulgrew Miller\, Kenny Kirkland\, and Kenny Drew. He became a longtime member of Kenny Garrett’s group beginning in 1994\, and has worked and recorded with Pharoah Sanders\, George Coleman\, Harold Mabern\, George Cables\, and Joe Farnsworth\, among many others. He has released three albums as a leader\, State of Emergency\, Blue Ridge\, and now Now in Time\, released April 17\, 2026 on Cellar Live. \nNow in Time brings together an extraordinary lineup spanning multiple generations of jazz\, twelve tracks running just over an hour that move comfortably between Reeves’ own original compositions and a thoughtful selection of standards\, including “On Green Dolphin Street\,” “Alice in Wonderland\,” and a tribute to Marvin Gaye with “The Creator Has a Master Plan.” Throughout the record\, Reeves’ bass acts as a quiet narrator\, steering the music’s direction with the kind of unhurried confidence that comes from four decades on the bandstand. Critics have praised the album as a recording that rewards close\, attentive listening\, one that resists the pace of casual consumption and instead invites listeners to settle into a long evening built on the trust and shared musical language of these six players. \nT \nhis is a rare chance to hear the album’s celebrated lineup perform the music live\, in an intimate setting. \nThe Band:\nNat Reeves – Bass\nEric Alexander – Tenor Saxophone\nSteve Davis – Trombone\nEddie Henderson – Trumpet\nCaelan Cardello – Piano\nJeff “Tain” Watts – Drums \nCover: $38.57

SUMMARY:XAVIER DAVIS QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:Xavier Davis’ professional career as a Jazz pianist took off when the legendary vocalist Betty Carter spotted his outstanding talent at the 1994 International Association of Jazz Educators convention in Boston while he was performing with his college ensemble. It was her who brought Xavier to New York\, hiring him exclusively as the pianist of her working trio.  Today\, Xavier is one of the most accomplished Jazz pianists world wide.  Having led master classes and clinics all over the world and coming from a family of music educators\, passing on knowledge and skills to young musicians is very important to Xavier. As such\, he is proud to be Associate Professor of Jazz Piano at Michigan State University. Xavier was also member of the teaching staff in the Jazz department of the Juilliard School of Music in New York for six years prior to that. \nHis development as a musician has been greatly influenced by the inspiration and guidance he has received from Carl Allen\, James Williams\, and Billy Hart\, whom he sees and respects as his great mentors.  In addition to Betty and Carl\, Xavier has performed and recorded with many other world-famous Jazz artists like the legendary Freddie Hubbard\, Tom Harrell\, Christian McBride\, Regina Carter\, Stefon Harris\, Abbey Lincoln\, Wynton Marsalis\, Don Byron\, Nat Adderley\, Nicholas Payton\, Jon Faddis\, Jimmy Greene\, Steve Turre\, Al Foster\, and Jeremy Pelt among others. During the 1999 – 2000 season\, Xavier worked with the Boy’s Choir of Harlem as their Musical Director. He also played keyboard for the television series “Cosby.” His talent has been featured on more than 50 albums.  Xavier is part of the Christian McBride Big Band and was featured on Christian’s album ‘The Good Feeling’\, which won a Grammy award in 2012. \nA \ns a bandleader\, Xavier has released two critically acclaimed albums – ‘Dance of Life’ and ‘The Innocence of Youth’. “The pianist [Xavier Davis] simply knows how to make every note on his instrument sing\, and he invariably finds the richest area of the keyboard for voicing his chords.” says writer Bob Blumenthal. Jazz Times reviewer John Murph writes “…the music exudes a mature\, nonchalant ease and cozy empathy that make this…a rewarding listen.” Down Beat gave the CD\, “Dance of Life\,” four stars\, stating\, “Davis steps out with an accomplished debut.”  Xavier is currently working on his long awaited follow-up to these albums. \nIn 2005\, Xavier became the first person to receive the prestigious “New Works Grant” twice from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation under the auspices of Chamber Music America. SUMMARY:BENNY GREEN
DESCRIPTION:Benny Green – Solo Piano \nBenny Green is one of the most exciting\, hard-swinging pianists to emerge from the legacy of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Born in New York and raised in Berkeley\, California\, Green began classical piano studies at age seven\, drawn to jazz through his father’s record collection of Monk and Bird\, and his early talent led to a weekly trio gig at Yoshi’s while still in high school. \nAfter moving to New York\, Green studied with veteran pianist Walter Bishop Jr.\, who encouraged him to explore the full scope of jazz piano history to find his own voice. He went on to work with Betty Carter from 1983 to 1987\, then realized a lifelong dream by joining Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers\, remaining a member until Blakey’s passing in 1990. He went on to join Freddie Hubbard’s quintet\, and in 1993 became the first recipient of the City of Toronto’s Glenn Gould International Protégé Prize in Music\, selected personally by Oscar Peterson. That same year he joined Ray Brown’s trio\, remaining until 1997. \nGreen has been hailed as the bearer of a torch handed down to him personally by his mentors\, Betty Carter\, Art Blakey\, Freddie Hubbard\, and Ray Brown\, a living link to one of the great lineages of jazz piano. With a recording career spanning over one hundred sessions as both leader and sideman\, and decades of touring as a soloist and bandleader\, Green brings the full weight of that tradition to The Side Door for two nights of solo piano\, an intimate format that allows his extraordinary touch\, harmonic depth\, and hard-swinging spirit to take center stage. \nThe Side Door Jazz Club is a dedicated jazz listening room located inside the historic Old Lyme Inn\, 85 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, CT. Tickets are reserved seating. Guests dining at the Old Lyme Inn prior to the show receive 10% off their dinner bill. \nCover: $27.98
