SUMMARY:THE ABNEY EFFECT
DESCRIPTION:Chicago born and raised jazz trumpeter Mario Abney now of New Orleans fuses traditional and extended trumpet techniques in a most inventive way; his strikingly personal instrumental vision endows the music with an infinite array of tonal color. Recognized for his ability to create pure musical dialog\, and hear music in a universally spiritual way\, he is definitely one of New Orleans most pioneering young jazz musicians. \nMarioʼs first experience hearing jazz was the music of trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. After jazz trumpet peaked his interest in music Mario began to absorb the music of Louis Armstrong\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Miles Davis\, and all the great trumpeters who pioneered the music. In 2001\, after several years of playing as a side man Abney was inspired to lead his own Quintet. During a performance at the Dayton RiverWalk festival in 2007 Mario became interested in going to New Orleans after hearing the Hot 8 Brass Band perform. By spring of 2008 Abney and two members from his quintet moved to New Orleans to absorb its rich musical culture and become part of the music scene. \nCover: $15.00

SUMMARY:JUDITH OWEN
DESCRIPTION:Judith Owen is a performer whose stylistic range spans rock\, pop\, classical\, jazz\, blues\, and musical theatre. Owen is also a comedic actress and master storyteller. Judith grew up in London surrounded by classical music\, ballet\, theatre\, and the fine arts. Further\, she was also exposed to many jazz icons and Broadway musicals that her parents loved. Thus\, this mixture would become her signature sound. \nOwen quickly began performing at a variety of different venues around London. Her unique hybrid of classical/jazz-influenced styled sound soon affirmed a regular slot at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s. \nHer new live album\, 2024’s Comes Alive\, follows her hugely successful 2022 album Come On & Get It. That album received over 2.6 million album streams and more than a million YouTube views. Judith Owen Comes Alive features sixteen tracks recorded live over a weeklong residency in Bern\, Switzerland at Marians Jazzroom. \nOwen conceived of the project because of her childhood fascination with the music of the pioneering but oft forgotten women of jazz and blues. For example\, Julia Lee\, Blossom Dearie and Nellie Lutcher. She discovered these women hidden in her father’s record collection alongside Oscar Peterson and Jelly Roll Morton. There\, Owen became captivated and enchanted by these “unapologetic” chanteuses of the 40’s/50’s. They were singing about sex and enjoying it\, at a time when women were meant to sing about romance. Then\, Owen made it her mission to dig deep and find out more from both a musical and historical perspective. The result is a joyful\, uplifting\, and empowering project. Moreover\, she honors these entertaining women who broke the glass ceiling with their stiletto heels and were proud of it! \nCover: $30.00~$40.00

SUMMARY:BEN WOLFE QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:RECORD RELEASE \n\nFollowing his acclaimed 2023 release Unjust\, which received accolades from DownBeat\, The Wall Street Journal\, NPR and more\, esteemed bassist and composer Ben Wolfe returns with The Understated. This project features a mix of new compositions and fresh takes on his earlier works\, with a notable emphasis on ballads\, showcasing Wolfe’s ability to transform the classic song form into a cohesive narrative. \n\n\nWolfe has always been drawn to finding beauty in subtlety. He perceives a certain tranquility and elegance in the Coltrane Quartet\, Louis Armstrong’s Hot Fives and Sevens\, the legendary Miles Davis bands and rhythm sections\, and the music of Charlie Parker. While he\, of course\, revels at the immense world-building energy of this music\, it’s the “other side” – the elusive\, magical aspect that endlessly captivates him – the understated. The composer draws inspiration most from the ensemble work of these hallmark jazz ensembles. Despite the individual parts being extraordinarily beautiful on their own\, the musicians in these archetypal ensembles play only what is needed to serve the music\, paying particular attention to the band-sound moreso\nthan their individual sound.\n\nThe Understated embodies this ethos with a tremendously impactful ensemble-oriented approach. The Understated is a testament to Wolfe’s dedication to finding beauty in subtlety and ensemble performance\, offering listeners a tranquil and elegant listening experience.\n\n\nThe Band: Ben Wolfe ~ Bass | Nicole Glover ~ Saxophone | Orrin Evans ~ Piano | Aaron Kimmel ~ Drums \n\nCover: $35.00 ~ $110.00

SUMMARY:STEVE ROSS SINGS FRED ASTAIRE
DESCRIPTION:Puttin’ On The Ritz: Steve Ross was raised in Washington\, DC\, and heard a lot of music at home\, some from his mother who played piano. In due course\, he studied piano himself and by the time he had attended Georgetown University\, spent a little time in a seminary\, and served in the US Army\, he had become an accomplished pianist\, drawing his repertoire not from contemporary pop but from the Great American Songbook. In the early 70s he settled in New York City where he soon became well known on the city’s cabaret scene. \nAt first a background pianist\, he was urged by club owners to sing and gradually began to do this\, eventually training as a singer. As his personal style developed\, so his reputation spread. Ted Hook\, owner of Backstage\, a piano bar in the midtown theatre district\, hired him. The association was hugely successful and in 1979 Hook opened a new club\, Onstage\, especially to showcase Ross’ talents. In 1981\, Ross was booked into the Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel where he played a considerable part in establishing the room as a perennial favorite of artists and customers. \nAt some venues he would find himself accompanying leading entertainers who happened to be in the audience\, among them Liza Minnelli and Ginger Rogers. Ross toured Australia in 1986\, one of his shows there being recorded at Don Burrows’ Supper Club\, and he returned to that country in the late 90s. He has played many festivals\, including Perth in Australia\, Spoleto in Italy\, and Hong Kong. Other international venues include seasons at London’s Ritz Hotel and Pizza On The Park. In 1989\, he hosted a live cabaret series for BBC Television\, and back in America was host of New York Cabaret Nights\, a series for National Public Radio. \nCover: $30.00~$40.00

SUMMARY:NDUDUZO MAKHATHINI
DESCRIPTION:Nduduzo Makhathini grew up in the lush and rugged hillscapes of umGungundlovu in South Africa\, a peri-urban landscape in which music and ritual practices were symbiotically linked. The area is significant historically as the site of the Zulu king Dingane kingdom between 1828 and 1840. It is important to note that the Zulu\, in fact the African warrior code\, is deeply reliant on music for motivation and healing. This deeply embedded symbiosis is key to understanding Makhathini’s vision. \nThe church also played a role in Makhathini’s musical understanding\, as he hopped from church to church in his younger days in search of only the music. The legends of South African jazz are deep influences as well\, Bheki Mseleku\, Moses Molelekwa\, and Abdullah Ibrahim. “The earlier musicians put a lot of emotions in the music they played\,” he says. “I think it may also be linked to the political climate of those days. I also feel there is a uniqueness about South African jazz that created an interest all around the world and we are slowly losing that too in our music today. I personally feel that our generation has to be very conscious about retaining these nuances in the music we play today.” \nThrough his mentor Mseleku\, Makhathini was also introduced to the music of John Coltrane’s classic quartet with McCoy Tyner. “I came to understand my voice as a pianist through John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme\,” he says. “As someone who started playing jazz very late\, I had always been looking for a kind of playing that could mirror or evoke the way my people danced\, sung and spoke. Tyner provided that and still does in meaningful ways.” Makhathini also cites American jazz pianists including Andrew Hill\, Randy Weston and Don Pullen as significant influences. \nThe Band: Nduduzo Makhathini – Piano | Zwelakhe Dumas Bell Le Pere – Bass | Francisco Mela – Drums \nCover: $80.00 | Dinner & Show

SUMMARY:LONGINEU PARSONS ENSEMBLE
DESCRIPTION:Unity Jazz presents trumpeter Longineu Parsons and his Ensemble featuring pianist Nat Adderley Jr. with special guest vocalist Myrna Clayton. \nThe career of Longineu Parsons\, with its many musical pieces and parts\, serves as a metaphor for what he calls “the disorder of the human tribe.” The whole of Longineu Parsons is greater than the sum of his parts\, and he has made it his mission – and the mission of his own Tribal Disorder Records – to use music as “a force against disorder in the human tribe.” \nIn his own life and career\, this “disorder” has come in the form of widely diverse musical passions and pursuits.  Growing up in Jacksonville\, Florida\, Parsons instinctively plays the blues as a native language.  After cutting his teeth playing hometown gigs starting in junior high\, he toured on the Chitlin Circuit for a few years before attending Florida A&M University for his undergraduate degree.   \nThere\, two pivotal experiences would help set his course.  The first was that he heard the John Coltrane album “Expression” – it opened his ears and changed his life.  Though he was already into Miles Davis and “Bitches Brew\,” something was different about this.   Secondly\, he met the famous trumpeter (and FAMU alum) Nat Adderley.  Nat took Longineu under his wing and over time\, mentor and protégé became lifelong friends.  Longineu is honored to play Nat’s cornet as his main horn. \nTickets: $50.00 | CashApp: $UnityJazz / Zelle: 7708991991 \nFree Parking \n
