SUMMARY:THE MUSIC OF BENNY GOLSON
DESCRIPTION:Eddie Henderson – trumpet | Ralph Moore – tenor saxophone | Steve Davis – trombone | Mike LeDonne – piano | Buster Williams – bass | Carl Allen – drums \n“Among jazz’s greatest living composers.” – The Washington Post The music of jazz legend Benny Golson is celebrated and performed by the New Jazztet featuring trumpeter Eddie Henderson\, trombonist Steve Davis\, pianist Mike LeDonne\, bassist Buster Williams\, and drummer Carl Allen with special guest Ralph Moore on tenor saxophone. This group recorded together under Golson’s leadership in 2008\, which resulted in the acclaimed album\, New Time\, New ’Tet. Golson is one of the most important contributors to jazz history as a player and the jazz canon as composer writing such enduring classics as “Killer Joe\,” “I Remember Clifford\,” “Along Came Betty\,” “Stablemates\,” “Whisper Not\,” “Blues March\,” “Five Spot After Dark\,” and “Are you Real?” among quite a few others. He also was a major influence on the tenor saxophone playing in the bands of Benny Goodman\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Lionel Hampton\, Earl Bostic\, and Art Blakey. The full impact of his career on American culture is hard to summarize but Downbeat called him “a defining voice of modern jazz.” \n***PLEASE NOTE: All 7PM and 9PM shows at Smoke are Dinner Shows | Fees Apply To All Tickets

SUMMARY:SUBA TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Omar Sosa ~ Piano | Seckou Keita ~ Kora | Gustavo Ovalles ~ Percussion \nSeven-time Grammy-nominated pianist Omar Sosa joins kora maestro Seckou Keita and percussionist Gustavo Ovalles for an all-star collaboration.\n\nThe Atlantic Ocean separates Senegal and Cuba\, the respective birthplaces of kora maestro Seckou Keita and piano virtuoso Omar Sosa\, a distance diminished by their shared ancestral connection to Africa. In the summer of 2012\, Omar and Seckou were invited to perform together in London by their mutual friend\, the drummer Marque Gilmore. “Seckou arrived just before the gig\, took out his kora and started playing\,” Omar remembers\, “and I clicked with him like we had been playing together all our lives.”\n\n\nSeckou loved Omar for his “high level of musical spirituality.” Omar saw in Seckou a rare ability to blend\, collaborate\, but never lose his identity. Both men started their careers as drummers\, so the melodies grooved. For this collaboration they’re joined by master percussionist Gustavo Ovalles\, after their critically acclaimed Tiny Desk performance together.
