The Jazz Voyager
Manhattan is calling the Jazz Voyager once again to its theater district wherein lies the famed jazz nightclub Birdland. This venerable jazz club opened on December 15, 1949 and though the original location, which was located at 1678 Broadway, just north of West 52nd Street closed in 1965 due to increased rents, it re-opened for one night in 1979. Then in 1986 a revival began with the opening of the second nightclub by the same name that is now located not far from the original nightclub’s location. The current site at 315 West 44th Street 10036 is in the same building as the previous New York Observer headquarters.
Too young to have gained admittance to the original club before it closed, this Jazz Voyager will enjoy revisiting the club, not patronized since the Nineties, to hear one of the genres emerging vocalists Veronica Swift and of course for the late show at 10:30. The price of admission is $40 and if memory serves me, make a reservation at 212-581-3080. #wannabewhereyouare

The Jazz Voyager
The Jazz Voyager is heading to the 15222 zip code in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to take in a jazz set at Little E’s Jazz Club. Situated at 949 Liberty Avenue on the second floor they are known to hosts some of the finest jazz players around and also welcomes jazz scene newcomers.
Open for two years, it has quickly become one of the best jazz clubs in the city offering up an American fare of surf and turf house specialties. Hosting local, regional and national musicians in addition to the hottest up-and coming acts, reservations are best made in advance. To find out who’s playing when as well as cover charge, I recommend you call ahead for that information at 412-392-2217, as their website has limited information. #wannabewhereyouare

The Jazz Voyager
The Artists’ Quarter is the next stop for the Jazz Voyager but instead of flying he’s jumping into a rental to experience the open road of the Midwest from Kansas City to his destination is the Twin Cities at 408 St. Peter Street, Maplewood, Minnesota 55102.
Tucked in the basement level of a historic St. Paul building, the Artists’ Quarter has a subterranean, classic vibe evoking a bygone era. Owned by working jazz musicians, who designed a sound, look and feel for the optimal live experience. Bringing in national acts or rising stars from the local scene, the AQ takes its jazz seriously. They don’t have a kitchen but have partnered with several nearby restaurants to deliver your choice of cuisine. I’m looking to be surprised by who will be performing but for more info: 651-292-1359. #wannabewhereyouare

The Jazz Voyager
The Jazz Voyager is on his way to the Midwest to Kansas City, Missouri, specifically to 1809 Grand Blvd, 64108 where the Green Lady Lounge is situated. This iconic jazz club serves up live music every night amid a retro vibe, scarlet walls, a marble bar, never a cover charge, open seating and doesn’t close its doors until 3:00am. As the saying goes, you don’t have to go home but…
With three separate stages – the Main Floor, Orion Room and the Black Dolphin there’s plenty of music choices for everyone. I’ll be arriving on Friday and plan to catch the last set of the Tim Whitmer Quartet from 5:30 – 8:30pm, the Boogaloo7 at 9:00pm and for those nightowls a set with the Matt Villinger Organ Trio begins at 12:30am. I may stick around KC and head back on Saturday to listen to the Chris Hazelton Trio at 9:00pm in the Orion Room.
The menu has two basic plates: cheese, Canadian bacon and crackers, and hummus and crackers to take the hunger edge off. If you desire more dine before you arrive. No reservations required but if you desire any more information call 816-215-2954. #wannabewhereyouare

The Jazz Voyager
While the Jazz Voyager is on the West Coast he’s heading to northern California to find the heart he left in the city on the bay, well Oakland, that is. There I know I will be in good company for a performance of the Count Basie Orchestra as they celebrate over 80 years at Yoshi’s. This well known and respected jazz spot began in 1972 as a small, North Berkeley sushi bar owned by founder and namesake, Yoshie Akiba, alongside her two best friends Kaz Kajimura, a journalist and carpenter, and Hiroyuki Hori, a painter and Japanese cook.
With 310 seats, a state-of-the-art sound system and 17,00 square feet in the heart of Jack London Square, at 510 Embarcadero West 94607, they have expanded their roster to include broader genres of musical and comedic tastes.. So If you’re planning a visit check the calendar to insure your night of choice is jazz that you want to hear.
Always one for the late show this Jazz Voyager will be arriving Friday for the 10:00pm and not the 8. Tickets are reasonable at $37 and $34, respectively, and partake of some excellent Japanese cuisine. Reservations are always recommended at 510-238-9200. #wannabewhereyouare
