Christopher Burnett was born in Olathe, Kansas on November 2, 1955 and grew up in a military family that moved often before settling in the Kansas City area. He was exposed to music growing up as his mother introduced him to the piano and he was a member of the youth choir at his church. He took up saxophone and clarinet in his school band. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Music Program where he performed and pursued higher education, studying at the Armed Forces School of Music, Webster University, Missouri’s Columbia College, Berklee College of Music, and American University.
Spending 22 years in the military, Chris rose to the rank of 1st Sergeant in the position of Enlisted Bandleader, staff and faculty assignment at the Armed Forces School of Music, and the leading Chief Petty Officer of the NATO Band in Naples, Italy. He served as NATO Ceremonial Band Conductor, directed the jazz band, played the lead alto saxophone chair with the West Point Military Academy Band’s Jazz Knights, and a featured soloist with the Hof Symphony Orchestra in Germany.
After leaving the military Burnett continued to teach, holding the position of director of the jazz ensemble program and adjunct lecturer at Missouri University of Science and Technology, formerly University of Missouri-Rolla, where he worked as an Adjunct Lecturer for a decade.
He has performed with artists like Bobby Watson, Will Matthews, Marcus Hampton, Ahmed Alaadeen, and many more. Burnett is the Founder and Artistic Director of KC Area Youth Jazz and along with colleagues Erica Lindsay and Sumi Tonooka is a co-founder of the large independent recording label, Artists Recording Collective.
He has held residencies at the historic Drum Room and the Black Dolphin in Kansas City, and appeared as a guest artist and clinician for the Northwest Missouri State Jazz Festival. He released his debut album as a leader, Time Flies in 2013, Firebird in 2014, in 2021 The Standards, Vol. 1, and Live at The Drum Room in Kansas City in 2022.

Judy Bailey was born on October 3, 1953 in Auckland, New Zealand and raised in Whangarei, a town in the north country. As a young child she learned ballet, followed by piano and theory when she was 10 years old. She graduated from Trinity College London in the United Kingdom when she was 16.
Moving to Australia in 1960, Judy has spent most of her time in Sydney. She performed live on television, live music venues like the legendary El Rocco and on many recordings.
As an eductor Bailey is a senior lecturer in jazz composition and jazz piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music since 1973 and is also musical director of the Sydney Youth Jazz Ensemble. In 1973, Bailey became the pianist on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation children’s radio show Kindergarten, which often featured presenters from Play School.
She has received the Order of Australia, was inducted into the Graeme Bell Jazz Hall of Fame by Jazz Australia, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Sydney. Pianist and composer Judy Bailey, who has lived in Australia since the 1960s, seldom performs.

William Overton Smith was born on September 22, 1926 in Sacramento, California. He grew up in Oakland, California where he began playing clarinet at the age of ten. At 13 he put together a jazz group to play for dances and at the age of 15 he joined the Oakland Symphony. After high school, a brief cross-country tour with a dance band led to his giving two weeks notice for the best education he could, and he headed to New York City.
Studying at the Juilliard School of Music by day, he played in the city’s jazz clubs at night. The Juilliard faculty doing nothing for him, Bill returned home and attended Mills College in Oakland where he met pianist Dave Brubeck. He went on to study composition with Roger Sessions at the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree.
A win of the Prix de Paris gave Bill two years of study at the Paris Conservatory, and in 1957, he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome and spent six years in that city. After teaching at the University of Southern California, he then spent thirty years teaching at the University of Washington School of Music in Seattle, Washington, and co-led the Contemporary Group.
Smith investigated and cataloged a wide range of extended techniques on the clarinet, including the use of two clarinets simultaneously by a single performer, and compiled the first comprehensive catalogue of fingerings for clarinet multiphonics. He was among the early composers interested in electronic music, and as a performer he continued to experiment with amplified clarinet and electronic delays.
He remained active nationally, internationally, and on the local Seattle music scene until well into his 90s. Clarinetist and composer Bill Smith, who played in various Brubeck groups and who composed, recorded and premiered his jazz opera Space in the Heart, passed away at age 93 in his home from complications of prostate cancer on February 29, 2020.

Jacques Loussier was born on October 26, 1934 in Angers, France. Starting piano lessons there aged ten, the following year he heard a piece from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. He fell in love with the music and began adding his own notes and expanding the harmonies. By 13, he met the pianist Yves Nat in Paris, who regularly gave him projects for three months, after which he returned for another lesson.
While studying at the Conservatoire National Musique, Loussier began composing music, having moved by then to Paris, with Nat, from the age of 16. He played jazz in Paris bars to finance his studies, and fusing Bach and jazz was unique at the time. After six years of studies, he traveled to the Middle East and Latin America, where he was inspired by different sounds. He stayed in Cuba for a year.
Early in his career, he was an accompanist for the singers Frank Alamo, Charles Aznavour, Léo Ferré, and Catherine Sauvage, before forming a trio in 1959 with string bass player Pierre Michelot, a Reinhardt alum, and percussionist Christian Garros. The trio began with Decca Records then moved to Philips/Phonogram in 1973, selling over six million albums in 15 years.
By the mid-1970s, the trio dissolved and Jacques set up his own recording studio, Studio Miraval, where he composed for acoustic and electric instruments. He recorded with musicians such as Pink Floyd, Elton John, Sting, Chris Rea, and Sade. Reviving his trio in 1985, with the percussionist André Arpino and the bassist Vincent Charbonnier. As early as 1998 the trio recorded interpretations). Besides Bach, the trio recorded interpretations of classical compositions on the album Satie: Gymnopédies Gnossienne. His last albums, My Personal Favorites, and Beyond Bach, Other Composers I Adore, were released in 2014, on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
Suffering a stroke during a performance at the Klavier-Festival Ruhr on July 14, 2011 retired from the stage. Pianist Jacques Loussier, who performed in the classical, jazz, and third stream arenas, passed away on March 5, 2019 at the age of 84.

Idolizing Benny Goodman, after high school and a brief cross-country tour with a dance band, he ended his romance for the road. Giving notice when the band reached Washington, D.C., he was encouraged by an older band member to get the best education he could, so he headed to New York.
He started his formal music studies at the Juilliard School of Music, playing in New York jazz clubs at night. Uninspired at Juilliard, he returned to California after hearing the music of Darius Milhaud, who was then teaching at Mills College in Oakland. At Mills, Smith met pianist Dave Brubeck, with whom he often played, was a member of the Dave Brubeck Octet, and later occasionally subbed for saxophonist Paul Desmond in the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Brubeck’s 1960 album Brubeck à la mode that featured ten of his own compositions. Rejoining Brubeck’s group in the 1990s.
Bill went on to study composition with Roger Sessions at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was graduated with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree.
