Compact bar and live music at Oliver’s Jazz Bar is this week’s stop-off as once again the Jazz Voyager crosses the Atlantic. Just a four-minute walk from the National Maritime Museum, this venue, full of old furniture and sporting a rabbit’s head with antlers, has been the cornerstone of the United Kingdom jazz scene since 2003. It’s located at 9 Nevada Street, Greenwich Peninsula, London SE10 9JL.

Not necessarily en route to a listening club, this visit to jolly old England nonetheless presents the opportunity to catch vocalist Louise Balkwill along with Tim Quicke on trumpet and pianist Chris Eldred – piano taking classics from the Great American songbook.Open every day at 4 pm, closing at 12 am Sunday through Thursday and 2 am on Friday and Saturday.

Unfortunately, they do not have a kitchen so no menu is offered, however, they gladly welcome you to bring food purchased elsewhere. For more information, the number to call is +44 20 8858 3693 and to reserve a table 020 8858 3693.

Southern California seems to be the next destination for the Jazz Voyager as he lands in San Diego and heads off to his hotel before he discovers Dizzy’s at Arias Hall and catches a Friday performance of Peter Spague and Sinne Eeg. Located at 1717 Morena Boulevard, Bay Park 92110, this venue is spare, inexpensive and comfortable.

Operated since 2000, for the past two decades, Chuck Perrin has refocused the city’s sputtering jazz scene and is fast becoming a destination for original performance of all kinds. There’s no bar, no restaurant, no blaring televisions ~ just music. And instead of talking, patrons listen.

Savannah, Georgia is the next stopover for the Jazz Voyager to visit the home of Johnny Mercer. While in town I’ll also be stepping into the world where the cultured and sophisticated mingle, wine and dine at the Good Times Jazz Bar and Restaurant at 107 W. Broughton Street 31401 to hear some jazz. The club was born out of a desire by Stephen T. Moore to bring great southern fare, fine wines, and the best jazz.

The setting is a sophisticated relaxing atmosphere and from Sunday to Saturday, they feature the best live jazz the Low Country has to offer. The musicians perform Tuesday ~ Thursday from 7:00p -10:00p, Friday and Saturday live music from 8:00 to 11:00 pm.

Although walk-ins are welcomed upon availability, reservations are highly recommended, but there may be a slight wait so patience is requested while your table is made available. To make one or for more information, the number to call is 912-236-2226 or 912-236-7326.

The Jazz Voyager is grabbing his winter coat and heading back out West on a morning flight to catch a set of music at the Sacred Grounds Jazz Coffeehouse. Located at 4425 N. Granite Reef Road, Scottsdale, Arizona 85251, this venue is part of the outreach ministry of Scottsdale Congregational United Church of Christ.

Each Thursday evening from 7:30~9:30 pm they offer acoustic jazz by the very best local and internationally known jazz musicians. I am told it is a comfortable, non~smoking setting where friendly people can listen and be treated to gourmet desserts and coffee.

This evening’s performance will be given by the Michael Collins Trio. For additional information, the number is 480-946-2900. A suggested donation is $5.00.
