The Jazz Voyager
The Jazz Voyager is opting to remain in Europe and jumping over to Rynek Główny 28, 31-000 Kraków, Poland to the Harris Piano Jazz Bar. This Thursday night I will be privileged to listen to the Groborz Trio – Inside Jazz starting at 9:30pm.
With jazz symbolizing freedom and resistance amid Stalin’s repressive regime after the war, many top US jazz acts often played venues like this. Harris is an intimate nightclub with about 70 seat capacity in nearly 1,000-year-old brick cellars with bars in adjacent rooms. The bar’s garden is on the hugely atmospheric Market Square and lays down a musical menu of mainstream jazz, funk and blues with an often boisterous vibe.
Open daily from 10:00am to 3:00am, admission on most nights is free, however, there is a charge for national and international acts that can range from €5 – €10. Reservations are recommended on weekends at harris.krakow.pl, +48 12 421 57 41or +12 421 57 41. #wannabewhereyouare

Three Wishes
Nica asked bassist Ali Jackson what his three wishes were and he told her:
- “To be on a hip, swinging gig. That’s all I need.”
- “To be inspired to practice – which I would be if the first wish came true!”
- “To find a bass fiddle I saw in Cleveland in 1951. That fiddle was so old, the wood was black on the outside – really black, you know? And the inside was yellow. It was brought from Russia in 1890. It was heavy, and when I tried it, man, what a sound! I ran all over town borrowing money from everybody – even my landlady – and I got together about $350. But when I got back it was gone. They sold it for $750. But it would be worth $2,000 now. I’d like to find that fiddle.”

The Jazz Voyager
The Jazz Voyager is jet setting across the globe to Europe’s westernmost capital city of Portugal where is situated one of Europe’s oldest jazz nightspots: Hot Clube. Founded in 1948, it has hosted legends in its 140 seat capacity. Though it suffered a fire in 2009, it reopened three years later two doors away with a new interior style that is minimalist and modern and the only heat being generated now is by the soloists up on its stage.
Just a short walk from the Bairro Alto, central Lisbon, the club is located at 48 Praca da Alegria, attracting a mixed crowd of young musicians, students, and tourists. This weekend I will be catching João Barradas on accordion recording his new album Own Thoughts From Abroad with Simon Moullier on vibraphone, Luca Alemanno playing double bass, Naima Acuña on batteria.
Drinks are reasonably priced, admission €10.00 for non-members with free entry to members. Reservations for all name acts at +21 3460305. #wannabewhereyouare

When Al Haig was asked to respond to the Baroness’s three wish request he stated via telephone:
- “Coitus! Hurry over to the Algonquin and I’ll tell you what two and three are.”
