Steve Lane was born on November 7, 1921 in London, England where his father was a concertina player who recorded with the Rio Grande Tango Orchestra in the 1920s. Having heard his first jazz in the Rhythm Clubs of the late 1930s, his first choice of instrument was guitar, but, following wartime service, he switched to the cornet on which he soon developed a jazz style based on the hot trumpeters of the 1920s he so much admired, with particular emphasis on his role leading the collective ensemble.

A gifted composer of vocal and instrumental pieces, he deftly incorporated female vocalists as an integral part of the band, thus presenting a range of songs carefully chosen to showcase the singer, and the supporting musicians strictly trained in the art of accompaniment. A taskmaster offering little compensation and weekly rehearsals, his personnel changed often but allowed him the ability to discover young talent such as pianists Martin Litton and Bruce Boardman and trombonist Bob Hunt.

Steve led his own Southern Stompers jazz band in the early 1950, and also led and recorded with his Red Hot Peppers and the VJM Washboard Band for over 50 years. In 1952 he established the Ealing Jazz Club, and in the Sixties establishe the West End Jazz Club and was a founding partner of VJM Records.

Cornetist, guitarist, composer, arranger and bandleader Steve Lane, who was a traditional jazz player, passed awya on August 22, 2015 at age 93.

Marvin Ash was born Marvin E. Ashbaugh was born on October 4, 1914 in Lamar, Colorado. Growing up in Junction City and Emporia, Kansas he started playing with bands during high school. He worked with Count Basie, Wallie Stoeffer, Con Conrad, Herman Waldman and Jack Crawford. On a visit to Abilene, Texas  in 1931 he found inspiration when he heard pianist Earl Hines perform. A fortunate encounter at Jenkins’ Music Store afforded him the opportunity to hear Joe Sullivan play his Little Rock Getaway for Fats Waller and Arthur Schutt, seated at two other pianos. He adapted his style similar to the three of them.

Moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma at 22 he worked in radio as a studio pianist, musical director, and announcer at KVOO-FM. This allowed him to learn about different piano styles, his favorite musicians being stride pianists James P. Johnson and Waller, Pete Johnson, Earl Hines, Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson, and long-time friend Bob Zurke.

1942 saw Marvin in the Army, assigned to Fort Sill in Oklahoma, where he remained for six months after the end of the war. After the end of his service he moved to Los Angeles, California where found work with trumpeter Wingy Manone’s band. This resulted in some of his earliest ensemble recordings, performances at Club 47 led to sessions with Clive Acker’s Jump Records as a soloist in late 1947, and with Rosy McHargue’s Memphis Five.

Ash’s playing caught the attention of Capitol Records producer and A&R man Lou Busch who hired him to record a few more sides in 1949 with a small ensemble. In the 1950s, he played in cocktail lounges in Los Angeles but had few recording dates as a soloist, instead working as a sideman with Jack Teagarden, Matty Matlock, Pud Brown and Pete Daily. Ash’s sessions resulted in a suite for Decca Records entitled New Orleans at Midnight.

He found employment at Walt Disney Studios music department as a performer on movie and television soundtracks, and acting as the resident arranger and pianist for the Mickey Mouse Club. Marvin frequently performed with George Bruns’ group or with his own small ensemble at Disneyland.

Retiring in the mid Sixties, Ash spent his last few years playing vintage jazz, stride, and ragtime in the cocktail lounge of a large bowling alley in Los Angeles. He continued to be hired for special appearances until his death. Pianist Marvin Ash passed away on August 21, 1974 in Los Angeles, California at the age of 59.

Archie “Skip” Hall was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on September 27, 1909 and studied piano under his father. From the age of eight he lived in New York City and in the late 1920s he relocated to Cleveland, Ohio where he led his own band for most of the 1930s.

He worked as an arranger on contract and arranged for Jay McShann from 1940 to 1944 and during World War II played with Don Redman. In 1943 he entered military service and played in a band while stationed in England. Around 1945 Skip worked with Hot Lips Page and then joined the Sy Oliver band, who was his brother-in-law. Following this he worked with Wynonie Harris, Thelma Houston, and Jimmy Rushing before joining Buddy Tate’s group in 1948.

Hall went on to work with Tate for twenty years both as a performer and arranger. He also played in the 1950s and 1960s with Dicky Wells, Emmett Berry, and George James, as well as solo and with his own small groups. Arranger, pianist, and organist Skip Hall, who never recorded as a leader, passed away in November 1980 in Ottawa, Canada.

Daily Dose Of Jazz…

Cæcilie Norby was born on September 9, 1964 in Frederiksberg, Denmark, into a musical family, her father a classical composer and her mother an opera singer. She was a founding member of the band Street Beat in 1982 then for two years, she was a member of the jazz-rock band Frontline. From 1985 to 1993, she worked with singer Nina Forsberg in the rock band One~Two. During the 1990s, she turned to jazz and released her first solo album for Blue Note.

Her self~titled debut recording co~produced by Niels Lan Doky featured Scott Robinson, Randy Brecker and  Michael Brecker each played on one track. Doky produced her following album My Corner Of The Sky in 1996, which prominently featured pianists David Kikoski, Joey Calderazzo and Terri Lyne Carrington on drums. The repertoire for both recordings included only a few jazz standards like Summertime or Just One of Those Things, instead she and Lan Doky arranged classic popular songs for a jazz line-up, like Wild Is the Wind, By the Time I Get to Phoenix and a track by Curtis Mayfield on the first album. The Look of Love, Life on Mars, Spinning Wheel and Set Them Free by Sting she recorded on the second.

For both albums Norby wrote lyrics to compositions by Randy Brecker, Chick Corea, Don Grolnick and Wayne Shorter. Both albums gained wide attention and five-digit sales, especially in Denmark and also in Japan.

Her third album Queen of Bad Excuses, released in 1999, was a collaboration with bassist Lars Danielsson, who already played bass on her sophomore release. This time she brought into the studio pianists Ben Besiakov and Lars Jansson, drummers Anders Kjellberg, Per Lindvall, Billy Hart, guitarist John Scofield, saxophonist Hans Ulrik and percussionist Xavier Desandre Navarre. Vocalist Cæcilie Norby continues to advance the music.

Daily Dose Of Jazz…

Chuck Israels was born Charles H. Israels on August 10, 1936 in New York City, New York. He was raised in a musical family which moved to Cleveland, Ohio when he was 10 and his stepfather Mordecai Bauman was a singer who performed extensively with composer Hanns Eisler. With music a part of normal daily activity, folks like  Paul Robeson, Pete Seeger, and The Weavers were regular visitors. In 1948, the appearance of Louis Armstrong’s All Stars in a concert series produced by his parents gave him his first opportunity to meet and hear jazz musicians.

In college, Israels had the opportunity to perform with Billie Holiday. His first professional job after college was working with pianist Bud Powell in Paris, France. His first professional recording was Stereo Drive a.k.a. Coltrane Time with John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Kenny Dorham, and Louis Hayes.

>Israels is known for the Jazz Repertory as Director of the National Jazz Ensemble from 1973 to 1981. He made recordings with the Kronos Quartet and Rosemary Clooney in 1985. He was the Director of Jazz Studies at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington until 2010. In 2011, he created the Chuck Israels Jazz Orchestra and recorded Second Wind: A Tribute to the Music of Bill Evans in 2013.

He has worked with Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, J. J. Johnson, John Coltrane, and Judy Collins. Bassist, composer, arranger and bandleader Chuck Israels, who is best known for his work with the Bill Evans Trio,  continues to perform.
