Headed by Snarky Puppy’s multi-Grammy–winning percussion duo of Robert “Sput” Searight and Nate Werth, Ghost-Note is an explosion of sound. With an expansive roster of next-level musicians—representing members of Prince, Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Herbie Hancock, Kendrick Lamar, Marcus Miller, Toto, Justin Timberlake, and more—the band is pushing funk music into the future, building on the uplifting, pioneering foundations laid out by the likes of James Brown and Sly & The Family Stone and infusing their fresh take with tastes of afrobeat, hip-hop, psychedelia, world folklore, and more.
With the release of 2018’s Swagism, Ghost-Note has made their mission clear. The album puts rhythm at the forefront, with irresistible, heavy-hitting beats underlying the group’s wild, rich music. Featuring numerous guest collaborators, including Kamasi Washington, Karl Denson, Bobby Sparks, Nigel Hall, Taz, and others, Swagism showcases the band’s stunning ability to meld and amplify sounds, ultimately adding to Ghost-Note’s sharp, complex collaborations.
Fearless, both in Swagism’s sonic depth and conscious social commentary, the band easily translates this adventurousness in a live setting. After forming in 2015, Ghost-Note has already begun to take the world by storm. The group’s two studio albums—2018’s Swagism and 2015’s Fortified—have earned critical acclaim and popular success around the globe, with both albums hitting the #1 spot on the iTunes Jazz Charts. OKAN
Fusing Afro-Cuban roots with jazz, folk and global rhythms in songs about immigration, resistance and love, OKAN takes their name from the word for heart in their Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria. With vocals in Spanish, Yoruba and Spanglish, OKAN is led by the Cuban-born violinist and vocalist Elizabeth Rodriguez and percussionist and vocalist Magdelys Savigne, both Grammy and Latin-Grammy nominees.
Having performed and recorded with Bomba Estereo, Lido Pimienta, The Halifax Symphony Orchestra, Hilario Duran and Dayme Arocena, OKAN’s recent release Okantomi was awarded the 2024 Juno Award (the band’s second Juno recognition) and included in NPR Alt Latino, Le Monde, and CBC Music’s “Best of 2023” lists, garnering critical praise from Songlines UK, Billboard, Pop Matters and JAZZIZ.

BILL CHARLAP TRIO
Grammy Award-winning pianist Bill Charlap has performed with many of the leading artists of our time, from Phil Woods and Benny Carter to Gerry Mulligan and Wynton Marsalis. He is acclaimed for his interpretations of the American popular songbook, and has recorded albums featuring the music of Hoagy Carmichael, Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and Duke Ellington.
The Bill Charlap Trio, with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington, marks its 23rd year together this season, and is recognized as one of the leading ensembles in jazz.

Daily Dose Of Jazz…
Lawrence Brown was born on August 3, 1907 on August 3, 1907 in Lawrence, Kansas. When he was about six or seven years old his family moved to Oakland, California. He began playing the violin at a young age, but quickly grew tired of it and turned to playing the tuba in his school’s band.
Coming from a musical background, his mother played the organ and the piano and he often sang as a part of his father’s sermons when he preached at the A. M. E. Church. Brown discovered the trombone while doing janitorial work at his father’s church and wanted to replicate the sound of cello on a trombone.
Beginning his career with Charlie Echols and Paul Howard, in 1932 he joined Duke Ellington’s band. He was featured with the band every year on compositions such as Blue Cellophane and Golden Cress. Leaving Ellington’s band in 1951, Lawrence joined Johnny Hodge’s band, where he stayed for four years. After this stint he took a five year position as a session player with CBS.
He rejoined Ellington in 1960 and stayed with him until 1970. After leaving Ellington’s band the second time at the age of 63, Brown stopped performing.
Trombonist Lawrence Brown, whose fast technical style inspired trombonists from Tommy Dorsey to Bill Harris, died on September 5, 1988 in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 81.

Daily Dose Of Jazz…
Martin Pickett was born on August 2, 1969 in Bristol, United Kingdom. His love of music took shape in his early teens, writing songs and playing guitar. He studied classical guitar through to Bristol University, while having piano as a second instrument and exploring compositional approaches.
After graduating Pickett received a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in secondary music education, then moved to Oxford, UK to teach music in a secondary school. It was during this period that his interest in jazz piano dominated his musical activities.
In 1998 Martin left his teaching post to work as a freelance jazz pianist and teacher. Since this time he has worked in a variety of settings and worked with a wide array of Britain’s most talented musicians.
He has recorded his own compact disc, I’ll Be With You Again in 2005 and played on albums by Diane Nalini, Tim Wilson, 3BPM, and Frank Hockney. He was featured as a composer on all of these apart from Frank’s project.
Pianist Martin Pickett has been a teacher in Oxford since 1998 and continues to focus his attention to being a freelance jazz pianist, performing with the group 3BPM, and songwriting collaboration with Tony Isaacs..
