Steve Melling was born on July 12, 1959 and brought up in Preston, Lancashire, UK and began classical piano lessons at age 9. Two years later he began teaching himself jazz at around 11 years old. His first introduction to professional jazz musicians was when he asked the members of the Stan Tracey Quartet to autograph one of their vinyl albums at a Preston gig when he was 17. This fortuitous encounter would eventually lead him back to playing with them, Stan, Art Themen, Bryan Spring and Dave Green later in his career and always learn from the experiences.
Steve went on to study at Goldsmiths’ College in London, joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra around that time and began playing professionally in the late Seventies, touring with Harry Beckett and Elton Dean. In 1986 received the first Pat Smythe Memorial Trust Award.
The Nineties had him playing regularly at Ronnie Scott’s with his trio and recording with Alan Skidmore, Claire Martin and Peter King. Melling recorded his own album Trio Duo Solo for Ronnie Scott’s Jazz House label. He was commissioned by the Appleby Jazz Festival and wrote and directed a set for an 11-piece group. He joined The New Couriers, worked with Georgie Fame and played with the European Jazz Ensemble.
Steve was commissioned by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra to arrange a piece by Stan Tracey for an album to mark their 50th Anniversary and the album was launched at Ronnie Scott’s in early 2016. The same year he moved to Derbyshire and has spent much time composing, working on his own original compositions. He is also teaching and working with local and national jazz musicians.
Pianist and composer Steve Melling remains in demand in Britain and Europe.

Kirk Whalum was born July 11, 1958 in Memphis, Tennessee into a musical family, singing in his father’s church choir. He got his love of music from his piano teacher grandmother and two uncles who performed with jazz bands around the country. After graduating from Melrose High School he attended Texas Southern University where he was a member of the renowned Ocean of Soul Marching Band.
By 1986 he performed at Jean-Michel Jarre’s giant concerts Rendez-Vous Houston and Rendez-Vous Lyon. Whalum would go on to record with Jevetta Steele, Luther Vandross and tour with Whitney Houston, soloing on her single I Will Always Love You.
Kirk has worked on a number of film scores, including for The Prince of Tides, Boyz n the Hood, The Bodyguard, Grand Canyon, Cousins and contributed to the 2008 documentary film Miss HIV. As a leader he has recorded a series of well received albums and has twelve Grammy nominations and his first Grammy award in 2011 for Best Gospel Song.
He is the inaugural Jazz Legend honoree of the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville, Tennessee, joined the faculty of Visible Music College and received a Brass Note on Historic Beale Street, both in Memphis.

Michael Earl Henderson was born on July 7, 1951 in Yazoo City, Mississippi. He moved to Detroit, Michigan with his parents when he was young, his mother, Rose Williams sang in church. During his childhood, he played cello and then switched to bass guitar, teaching himself to play. When he was 10 or 11, he saved enough money to take a bus to see a bill of Motown artists at the Fox Theater. Precociously talented, he was performing with local bands before his 12th birthday.
Beginning his career early around the age of 14, he was on tour with the Detroit Emeralds when he met Stevie Wonder at a Chicago theater. In the dressing room was a piano, Stevie was playing and he sat down next to him with his bass and the meeting was fortuitous. Stevie hired Michael and they toured together for five years while working as a Motown session musician.
In 1970 at the Copacabana in Manhattan, Miles Davis heard him playing with Wonder. At that time Davis was entering his electric and rock rhythms and hired Henderson away. Over the next few years from 1970 to 1977 he recorded a string of albums with Davis, including Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson, Live-Evil, On the Corner, In Concert: Live at Philharmonic Hall, Get Up with It, Agharta, Pangaea, and Dark Magus.
With Norman Connors he invited him to write and record Valentine Love with Jean Carne, We Both Need Each Other with Phyllis Hyman and You Are My Starship. As a solo artist he recorded Take Me I’m Yours, Wide Receiver, and Can’t We Fall in Love Again, again with Hyman.
In 2002 Henderson returned to the music of Miles Davis and with several other Davis alumni, saxophonist Sonny Fortune and drummer Ndugu Chancler, formed the group Children on the Corner. A year later, they released the album Rebirth, which reinterpreted and recreated Davis’s electric music from the 1970s. He remained in the music industry until his death.
Bass guitarist and vocalist Michael Henderson died of cancer on July 19, 2022 at his home in Dallas, Ga., a suburb of Atlanta. He was 71.

Ike Sturm was born June 29, 1978 and was raised in a musical home in Wisconsin, learning from his father, renowned composer and arranger, Fred Sturm. He studied jazz and classical bass and composition while earning undergraduate and graduate degrees at the Eastman School of Music. In addition, he studied privately with legendary bassist Dave Holland.
Sturm went on to serve as Music Director for the Jazz Ministry from 2004-2021, commissioned him to compose Jazz Mass, a work for voices, strings and soloists that merges diverse musical languages into a powerfully unified aesthetic. The piece was released to critical international acclaim, named Best Albums of the Year by Downbeat and has been performed across the U.S., Scandinavia and Europe.He has performed with Gene Bertoncini, Theo Bleckmann, Ingrid Jensen, Donny McCaslin, Bobby McFerrin, Ben Monder, Maria Schneider and Kenny Wheeler. He has played on four Downbeat award-winning recordings, several Steve Reich releases on Canteloupe and Nonesuch Records and performed with Alarm Will Sound and the International Contemporary Ensemble, along with numerous creative ensembles in New York.
Bassist Ike Sturm currently leads a new worshiping community in New York City called Finding Our Way Home. He was commissioned by Montview Presbyterian Church in Denver, Colorado to write a new large-scale piece called River for 100 voices, string orchestra and the Ike Sturm Ensemble.

Nick Drozdoff was born on June 28, 1953 in Glencoe, Illinois. Holding degrees in music, engineering and physics, in 1978 he began his professional career in Maynard Ferguson’s band. Leaving the band in 1981 he ran his own contracting business and after completing his masters in classical trumpet, he began leading a double life in 1991 when he took on a day gig as a high school physics teacher at Winnetka’s New Trier High School.
After leading a double career existence and garnering awards as a high school science teacher, Nick developed endorsement deals as a jazz trumpeter at night. Retiring from teaching he pursued his musical passion. Now he spends time in Door County, Wisconsin and in the Northern Suburbs of Chicago where he regularly performs in both locations. He lives equal time in both places, depending on his performance and lecture/masterclass schedule.
His latest project centers on his new band, The Variable D Postulate Ensemble. This band is minimally a quartet of drums, guitar, keybaord and trumpet. It is primarily jazz driven but not exclusively. Drozdoff built a studio where he does his recording and has built connections as a trumpeter all over the world.
He has recorded with Grilly Brothers, Marshall Vente, Doug Lofstrom, Chuchito Valdes, and Guy Fricano. He is currently on call as solo trumpet with the Chicago Grandstand Big Band, The Jazz Consortium Big Band and the Starfall Big Band. Trumpeter Nick Drozdoff frequently appears as a classical soloist for churches, recitals andleads one of the Chicago area’s finest brass quintets.
