Bruce David Gertz was born on December 15, 1952 in Providence, Rhode Island. He first learned to play guitar, then switched to bass guitar as a teenager, playing with local blues and rock groups.
He studied music formally at New England College and Berklee College of Music in the 1970s. After graduating from Berklee in 1976 he taught music there; he is now a professor of music. He worked with George Garzone in the Overtones in the late Seventies and was a co-leader of ensembles with Jerry Bergonzi from 1978 to 1989.
He has worked with Mike Stern both in the Bergonzi ensembles and with Stern’s own quartet. From 1982 to 1985 he was house bassist for the Willow Jazz Cafe in Somerville, Massachusetts. In the 1990s he worked with John Abercrombie, Joey Calderazzo, Ken Cervenka, Adam Nussbaum, Danilo Perez, Dan Reiser, Kurt Rosenwinkel, George Schuller, and others.
Double and electric bassist Bruce Gertz continues to perform.

Juhani Aaltonen was born December 12, 1935 in Kouvola, Finland. He began playing professionally at the end of the Fifties. He played in a sextet led by Heikki Rosendahl during that time, and then studied flute performance at the Sibelius Academy and in the U.S. at the Berklee College of Music.
Moving back to Finland, he settled in Helsinki and began working both as a session musician and with fusion groups. Late in the 1960s he formed a duo with Edward Vesala, played in the group Eero Koivistoinen and with Tasavallan Presidentti. He recorded with Thad Jones and Mel Lewis and with Heikki Sarmanto late in the decade and early 1970s. His debut album as a soloist, Etiquette, was released in 1974.
The following year Juhani became a member of the New Music Orchestra, and worked with the Nordic All Stars, Arild Andersen, and Peter Brötzmann before the end of the decade. The Eighties saw him working with the UFO Big Band, Jan Garbarek, Charlie Mariano, and others. He led a touring quartet from 1990 to 1992.
In 2001 he released a duo recording, Rise, and his trio album Mother Tongue won a Jazz-Emma in Finland. Saxophonist and flautist Juhani Aaltonen continues to perform as well as teach at the annual Nilsiä Music Camp.

Nathan Gershman was born Nathan Gerschman on November 29, 1917 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received classical training at the Curtis Institute of Music, graduating in 1940 and from that point in his life he played with the Cleveland Orchestra.
In 1947 Nathan moved to New York City to work as a studio musician, then worked in the same capacity in Los Angeles, California after 1954. Three years later he replaced Fred Katz as cellist in Chico Hamilton’s band, playing and recording in his band until 1961. As a jazz musician, he worked with Nat Adderley, Gábor Szabó, and Ronnie Laws during the 1970s.
Gershman was frequently active as a session player and studio musician for television, theater, and recordings in and around Los Angeles from the Sixties into the 1990s. He recorded on albums by David Axelrod, The Beach Boys, Geronimo Black, David Bromberg, Neil Diamond, Lee Hazlewood, Wayne Henderson, Van Dyke Parks, Esther Phillips, and Pleasure.
Cellist and session musician Nathan Gershman, who played in popular music, jazz, and classical idioms, died on September 13, 2008 in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.

Francesca Tanksley was born November 21, 1957 in Vincenza, Italy but grew up in Munich, Germany where she studied music from the age of seven. Moving to Boston, Massachusetts at 16, she studied piano and composition at Berklee College Of Music.
Two years later she returned to Munich. In 1980 she moved to New York City where she worked with Melba Liston until 1983, then she joined Billy Harper’s quintet with whom she toured extensively.
She has worked with Clifford Jordan, Cecil Payne, Bill Hardman and Erica Lindsay. She leads her own quintet and co-leads the Erica Lindsay/ Howard Johnson Quintet. As an educator she has been on the faculty of the New School, Berklee College. She has facilitated workshops and masterclasses at University of Southern California at Santa Cruz, Hampton University, Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute, Arizona State University, and Bard College.
Pianist Francesca Tanksley, who is a composer and educator, continues to perform and compose.

Justin Wood was born on November 18, 1975 in rural Northern Maine and began playing saxophone in fifth grade growing up. During high school, he co-led a jazz trio with trombonist Philip Yaeger and brother Tyler on piano, and played gigs ranging from local restaurants to agricultural conventions.
After attending Harvard University, Justin moved to New York City in 1999 and worked as a union organizer and explored the city’s music scene. He began performing in the city in 2001, and has performed with diverse musical groups in venues including Birdland, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, NJ Performing Arts Center, the Knitting Factory, and the Garage.
Rather than pursuing a conservatory education, he has learned from and been inspired by his peers. Through private lessons with top creative musicians such as Bill McHenry and Michel Gentile he has developed his own voice.
Currently, alto saxophonist and flautist Justin Wood continues to participate in diverse musical projects. He co-leads Spoke, an eclectic quartet with trombonist Andy Hunter, bassist Dan Loomis, and drummer Danny Fischer.
