Alfredo Remus was born on November 9, 1938 in Argentina. He learned to play the double bass and by 1964 was part of the ensemble recording the historic album La Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramírez. He has performed and/or recorded with Paul Gonsalves, Vinícius de Moraes, Maria Bethânia, Enrique “Mono” Villegas, Gato Barbieri, Mercedes Sosa, Tony Bennett, Ariel Ramírez, Víctor Heredia, Alberto Cortez, Trio Los Panchos, Raphael, Cuarteto Zupay, Dyango, Leonardo Favio, Sandro, Susana Rinaldi, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, among others.

He was regularly participated in a series of improvisation and casual folk experimentation at the house of Eduardo Lagos, named humorously by Hugo Diaz as folkloréishons, the jazz jam sessions with Astor Piazzolla, Diaz, Oscar Cardozo Ocampo, Domingo Cura, and Oscar López Ruiz, to name a few. Double bassist Alfredo Remus, the interpreter of tango, jazz, Argentine folklore, and bossa nova, continues to perform.

Daily Dose Of Jazz…

Red Wooten was born Lawrence Bernard Wooten on November 5, 1921 in Social Circle, Georgia and started his career playing country & western before moving to big band jazz. While still in his teens, he landed a six-dollar-a-week gig on Archie “Grandpappy” Campbell’s C&W show on radio station WDOD in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The band included future Sons of the Pioneers guitarist Roy Lanham. Texas crooner Gene Austin hired the band and dubbed them the Whippoorwills. He toured with Austin for a time, then quit the band due to exhaustion.

Red went on to play with several successful big bands of the ’40s, including those led by Jan Savitt and Tony Pastor. Beginning in 1949, he played with a succession of prominent swing bandleaders, including Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, and Charlie Barnet. In 1957, he recorded with Harry Babasin’s Jazzpickers in a rhythm section that also included Red Norvo. He hooked up with Norvo and recorded and toured with the vibist in 1957-1958.

He recorded The Most Exciting Guitar with Lanham in 1959. That year, Wootten also toured with Benny Goodman and Frank Sinatra. With Sinatra, he did movies, TV, and worked the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. In the ’60s and ’70s, he worked mostly in the studios, composed and arranged for film, and authored a book of musical exercises for bass instruments.

In addition to the aforementioned, Wootten played with Merle Travis, Glen Campbell, Eddie Dean, Mary Ford, Tex Williams, Jimmy Bryant, Joe Maphis, and Roy Rogers, among many others. He also worked on Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch radio show. Returning to country and won an Academy of Country Music Award as Best Bassist in 1982.

By the start of the Seventies, he was less active as a jazz musician and concentrated more on studio work. He also composed and arranged film scores. In the mid-1970s he recorded with Anita O’Day. Double bassist Red Wooten, whose name was sometimes spelled Wootten, at present no date of his transition is available.

Daily Dose Of Jazz…

Glen Moore, born October 28, 1941 in Portland, Oregon started his performing career began at age 14 with the Young Oregonians in Portland. It was at this time where he met and played with Native American saxophonist, Jim Pepper.

Graduating with a degree in History and Literature from the University of Oregon, his formal bass instruction started after college with Jerome Magil in his hometown, James Harnett in Seattle, Washington, Gary Karr in New York City, Plough Christenson in Copenhagen, Denmark, Ludwig Streicher in Vienna, Austria, and Francois Rabbath in Hawaii.

Moore is a founding member of Oregon but worked also regularly with Rabih Abou-Khalil, Vasant Rai, Nancy King, and Larry Kar. For the past 30 years, has played a Klotz bass fiddle crafted in Tyrol circa 1715 on which he has made extensive use of a unique tuning with both a low and high C string. He has recorded ten albums as a leader, twenty~eight with Oregon, and twenty as a sideman. Double bassist Glen Moore, who also plays piano, flute, and violin continues to perform and record.

Spotlights The Young Guns on October 15 

Hammonds House Digital invites you to join us for Conversations about Jazz & Other Distractions hosted by former jazz radio host and founder of Notorious Jazz, Carl Anthony. Every other Thursday, Carl takes audiences on a unique journey through the world of jazz music with artist talks, workshops, and listening sessions. 

On October 15 at 7:30 pm (EST), Conversations about Jazz features some of today’s Young Guns. Carl’s guests will be bassist Endea Owens; and multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, and engineer Morgan Guerin. This program is for the jazz novice and jazz head alike. It is free and will stream live on Hammonds House Museum’s Facebook and YouTube.

Lincoln Center’s Emerging Artist of 2019, recent graduate of the Julliard School, and Detroit native Endea Owens, is a vibrant up and coming bassist. She has been mentored by the likes of Marcus Belgrave, Rodney Whitaker, and Ron Carter. She has toured and performed with Jennifer Holliday, Rhonda and Diana Ross, Jazzmeia Horn, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Steve Turre, and Lea DeLaria from the Netflix Original Series “Orange is The New Black.’  Endea has performed around the globe including from Europe to India and Australia. She is the house bassist for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

New York City-based and New Orleans native multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, and engineer Morgan Guerin has achieved much in his young, burgeoning career. Dubbed a “wunderkind saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist” by The New York Times, Guerin is skilled in bass, saxophones, electronic wind instrument (EWI), drums, and keys. In 2016, the Huffington Post named his debut album, “The Saga,” one of the best Jazz albums of the year. In 2017, Stereogum highlighted his sophomore album, “The Saga II,” as one of the best new albums. He was featured on Terri Lyne Carrington & Social Science’s award-winning album, “Waiting Game.” He was a songwriter and co-producer of Esperanza Spalding’s 2019 Grammy-winning record, “12 Little Spells.”  His third album, “The Saga III,” was released on September 18, 2020.

Daily Dose Of Jazz…

Thore Jederby was born on October 15, 1913 in Stockholm, Sweden, receiving formal training in music at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. He began playing jazz in the mid-1930s, playing with Arne Hülphers’s band from 1934 to 1938, and then with Thore Ehrling’s ensemble from 1938 through the end of World War II.

He led his own group, the Swing Swingers, for studio recordings in the mid-1930s, and led smaller ensembles for recording sessions well into the 1940s. Later in his life, Thore went on to become active in the capturing of the history of Swedish jazz. He was involved in reissues of early Swedish recordings, curated radio shows devoted to Swedish jazz, and participated in a national commission on the history of jazz in Sweden.

Double bassist Thore Jederby, who was also a record producer and radio broadcaster, passed away on January 10, 1984 in Stockholm.
