Steven Feifke is a GRAMMY Award winning bandleader, composer, and arranger. A Yamaha Performing Artist, an Avid Sibelius Artist, and has appeared on over 45 albums to date. He has written music for hit TV shows like The Masked Singer, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Impractical Jokers, Animaniacs, and many world class big bands and orchestras around the globe.

Berklee College Of Music hired him as a professor of Harmony and Jazz Composition, and he has also been invited to give guest lectures and Artist in Residencies at institutions such as Yale University, Jazz At Lincoln Center, New York University, UT Austin, Northern Illinois University, and more.

STEVE ROSS SINGS FRED ASTAIRE

Puttin’ On The Ritz: Steve Ross was raised in Washington, DC, and heard a lot of music at home, some from his mother who played piano. In due course, he studied piano himself and by the time he had attended Georgetown University, spent a little time in a seminary, and served in the US Army, he had become an accomplished pianist, drawing his repertoire not from contemporary pop but from the Great American Songbook. In the early 70s he settled in New York City where he soon became well known on the city’s cabaret scene.

At first a background pianist, he was urged by club owners to sing and gradually began to do this, eventually training as a singer. As his personal style developed, so his reputation spread. Ted Hook, owner of Backstage, a piano bar in the midtown theatre district, hired him. The association was hugely successful and in 1979 Hook opened a new club, Onstage, especially to showcase Ross’ talents. In 1981, Ross was booked into the Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel where he played a considerable part in establishing the room as a perennial favorite of artists and customers.

At some venues he would find himself accompanying leading entertainers who happened to be in the audience, among them Liza Minnelli and Ginger Rogers. Ross toured Australia in 1986, one of his shows there being recorded at Don Burrows’ Supper Club, and he returned to that country in the late 90s. He has played many festivals, including Perth in Australia, Spoleto in Italy, and Hong Kong. Other international venues include seasons at London’s Ritz Hotel and Pizza On The Park. In 1989, he hosted a live cabaret series for BBC Television, and back in America was host of New York Cabaret Nights, a series for National Public Radio.

Daily Dose Of Jazz…

Alfredo Remus was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on November 9, 1938. In 1964 he participated as the double bassist on the historic album La Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramírez.

He has accompanied important musicians and groups such as Paul Gonsalves, Vinícius de Moraes, Maria Bethânia, Enrique “Mono” Villegas, Gato Barbieri, Mercedes Sosa, Tony Bennett, Ariel Ramírez, Víctor Heredia, Alberto Cortez, Trio Los Panchos, Raphael, Zupay Quartet, Dyango, Leonardo Favio, Sandro, Susana Rinaldi, and Antonio Carlos Jobim , among others.

He was a regular participant in a series of informal folklore improvisation and experimentation meetings at Eduardo Lagos’s house, humorously baptized by Hugo Díaz as folkloréishons, which in the style of jazz jam sessions, used to bring together Lagos, Astor Piazzolla and Díaz.

With other musicians, Remus played with Oscar Cardozo Ocampo, Domingo Cura and Oscar López Ruiz among others. He recorded nine albums as a leader with his debut album Trauma released in 1968 and his final recording Tribute To Bill Evans in 2006.

Double bassist Alfredo Remus, who performed various genres of American popular music, that included but not limited to tango,  jazz, Argentine folklore, bossa nova and post-bop,  died in Buenos Aires on September 28, 2022.

Daily Dose Of Jazz…

John Franklin “Ellington” Blair was born November 8, 1943 in Toledo, Ohio. He grew up in California and began taking violin lessons as a child, graduating with honors from Lincoln High School in San Diego, California in 1961.

Blair became a heavy academic, holding degrees from Eastman and Curtis conservatories. He even founded a school, The Universal Natural System. He is best known as the inventor of the Vitar, an acoustic combination of violin and guitar.

He was featured on many jazz funk records in the early 1970s and released a few sought after psych-funk releases on Mercury, Columbia and CTI. During the 1980s Ellington disappeared off of the map, never to return.

Violinist & guitarist Ellington Blair, suffered from heart failure and was homeless when he died on June 3, 2006 in New York City, New York
