Jeremy Pelt, celebrated for his virtuosic trumpet playing and collaborations with legends like Roy Hargrove and Cassandra Wilson, draws on his extensive experience as a bandleader and composer to create music that is both thoughtful and bold. This richly textural, Afro-futuristic work is centered on the stories and mysticism of masks, examining the folklore surrounding them and the spiritual power they hold. Featuring vocalist Candice Hoyes, the piece takes on an operatic dimension, with the human voice heightening its drama, ritual, and emotional scope.

Endea Owens, a member of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert band and a Juilliard graduate who has worked with Wynton Marsalis, Jon Batiste, and Diana Ross, infuses her music with passion and purpose shaped by her Detroit roots and deep commitment to community. Her work incorporates vocalists as well as dance company Sekou McMiller + Friends, adding a powerful physical and visual layer that brings the music’s themes of ancestry, grounding, and resilience vividly to life. This composition draws from multiple genres, blending elements of R&B, Gospel, Blues, and beyond.

World renowned bassist, composer, arranger, educator, and eight-time Grammy Award-winner, Christian McBride has been one of the most important and prolific figures in the jazz world for over 20 years. From jazz to R&B, and pop/rock and hip-hop/neo-soul to classical, Christian is one of the most acclaimed bassists of his generation, renowned for his bold, swinging style and robust sound. He has appeared on more than 300 recordings as a sideman, and is an eight-time Grammy Award winner, earning a 2016 GRAMMY Award for “Best Improvised Jazz Solo”, the only bassist to ever win at this category.

Christian McBride has worked with the best of the very best – James Brown, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Chaka Khan, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. EITHER/ORCHESTRA

In the decades since the Either/Orchestra debuted on December 17, 1985 at the Cambridge MA Public Library, the group has made over 1000 performances in 38 of the United States and 12 foreign countries, as well as releasing a dozen albums and being nominated for a Grammy, winning five Boston Music awards and numerous Downbeat Critics Poll placements, among many other honors. From prestigious festivals like Glastonbury Pop and Chicago Jazz to tiny clubs, schools and churches in out of the way places, the group has been “dependably marvelous,” according to the Village Voice.

No obstacles deterred leader Russ Gershon and his intrepid musical explorers from visiting new musical worlds – until the Covid pandemic. The band’s most recent performance was in December of 2019 at Tufts U., with one of their distinguished Ethiopian collaborators, vocalist Teshome Mitiku. But now, they’re coming back!

To celebrate the exact 40th anniversary of their first show, the Either/Orchestra returns to the stage not a mile from where they started. The E/O began playing the Regattabar when the club was band new in the ’90’s. There is no better and more appropriate venue for them to inaugurate their fifth decade.

The E/O will be making selections from their vast catalog of originals and original arrangements of classic and obscure jazz, as well as dipping into their unparalleled repertoire of Ethiopian music in honor of their upcoming release, éthiopiques 32: Nalbandian the Ethiopian.

Their second release on the legendary éthiopiques series features music by Nerses Nalbandian, a teenage refugee of the Armenian genocide who rose to become music director of Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie’s National Theater in Addis Ababa. Nalbandian’s interest in American music helped set the stage for the birth of the modern Ethiopian pop music which has bewitched music aficionados the world over the past couple of decades. His music has seldom been played since the totalitarian revolution which deposed Haile Selassie in 1974, and the E/O was asked by the Nalbandian family and éthiopiques producer Frances Falceto to reconstruct and play it at the National Theater of Ethiopia. The album is a record of that labor of love.

STRAIGHT AHEAD

Out of Detroit’s lively jazz scene, comes the ground breaking, Grammy-nominated jazz group Straight Ahead. A group of strong, inventive instrumentalists and vocalists, they have shown themselves to be powerful and imaginative composers and arrangers. Straight Ahead was the first all-woman group signed to Atlantic Jazz.

Widely recognized for their eclectic and soulful approach to creating music, Straight Ahead is in the Detroit Music Awards Hall of Fame. with a sound that ranges comfortably from mainstream jazz to Latin jazz and jazzy hip-hop.  Their live performances are a dynamic celebration of power and joy!

RON CARTER FEATURING BILL FRISELL

Ron Carter is among the most original, prolific and influential bassists in jazz with more than 2,000 albums to his credit. Beginning his career in the 1960s with Jaki Byard and Eric Dolphy, Cannonball Adderley, and a five year stint with the Miles Davis’ Quintet, Ron also performed and recorded with notables including Bill Evans, B.B.
