CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE TRIO

Bass genius Christian McBride honors his mentor and greatest inspiration, the legendary Ray Brown, with an all-star trio of Ray Brown Trio alumni — pianist Benny Green and drummer Gregory Hutchinson.

A major figure in the development of bebop and hard bop in the 40s and 50s, Brown was among the most prolific and versatile bassists in jazz history who gained fame through his notable associations with Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dizzy Gillespie.

He led a series of remarkable trios in the 1990s and 2000s featuring Green and Hutchinson, whose recordings for the Telarc label stand as benchmarks for the time-honored format.

In addition to his own lengthy histories with both Green and Hutchinson, McBride appeared on Brown’s live 1997 bass summit release SuperBass and 2001 follow-up SuperBass 2 (along with fellow legend John Clayton). He pays tribute to the master with this special performance.

THE COOKERS

The Cookers take their name from Night of the Cookers, the famous 1965 recorded trumpet summit between Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard at Brooklyn’s Club La Marchal. Formed by trumpeter and organizer David Weiss, the group brings together some of the most storied musicians in jazz, players who came up in the 1960s and 70s working alongside the very architects of the music.

Drummer Billy Hart and trumpeter Eddie Henderson were both members of Herbie Hancock’s groundbreaking Mwandishi group. Bassist Cecil McBee anchored Charles Lloyd’s celebrated quartet alongside Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. Pianist George Cables held the piano chair in bands led by Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Dexter Gordon, and Art Pepper. Saxophonist Donald Harrison, a recently named NEA Jazz Master, came up performing with Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, and Herbie Hancock.

Together these musicians have contributed to well over a thousand recordings across the history of jazz, and the chemistry between them, forged over decades of shared history on bandstands around the world, is unmistakable. Critics have praised The Cookers for embodying the serious commitment it took to thrive on the New York jazz scene of decades past, and audiences consistently describe their live performances as electrifying, a rare opportunity to witness musicians who don’t simply play the music, but live inside of it. BILL CHARLAP TRIO

Bill Charlap was born in New York City into a deeply musical family, his father was Broadway composer Moose Charlap, whose credits include Peter Pan, and his mother is singer Sandy Stewart, a Grammy nominated vocalist who toured with Benny Goodman. Charlap began playing piano at age three and never looked back. In the late 1980s he joined Gerry Mulligan’s quintet, and in 1995 secured one of the most coveted piano chairs in jazz with the Phil Woods Quintet. Since then he has performed with an extraordinary range of the music’s leading artists, including Tony Bennett, Wynton Marsalis, Ron Carter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Houston Person, and Barbra Streisand.

Charlap is widely regarded as one of the most gifted interpreters of the American songbook working today. Time magazine has written that he “approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved, no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.” His acclaimed trio, celebrated for its telepathic interplay and deep swing, has been together for decades and has released nearly 20 albums together. In 2016, his collaboration with Tony Bennett, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern, won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. From 2004 through 2023 he served as Artistic Director of New York City’s Jazz in July Festival at 92NY, and he currently serves as Director of Jazz Studies at William Paterson University.

Joining him for this special four night engagement are bassist David Wong and drummer Dennis Mackrel, two of the most respected rhythm section players in jazz. This is a rare and extraordinary opportunity to experience one of the true masters of jazz piano in an intimate setting.

AARON GOLDBERG TRIO

The New York Times has called Aaron Goldberg a “post-bop pianist of exemplary taste and range”, and over a career spanning three decades he has more than earned that distinction. Born in Boston, Goldberg discovered jazz in high school under the guidance of bassist Bob Sinicrope, and later studied with saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi before moving to New York at seventeen to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. DownBeat magazine has praised his “quick witted harmonic reflexes, fluid command of line, and cut-to-the-chase sense of narrative logic.”

Goldberg’s career has placed him at the center of some of jazz’s most important collaborations. He toured extensively with Joshua Redman, joined the bands of Kurt Rosenwinkel and Wynton Marsalis, and performed worldwide with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He has also collaborated with Charles Lloyd, Madeleine Peyroux, Betty Carter, Freddie Hubbard, and Guillermo Klein, among many others, and somehow found time to earn a master’s degree in philosophy from Tufts along the way. He is a Steinway artist and a member of the celebrated collaborative trio Yes! with Omer Avital and Ali Jackson Jr.

BENNY GREEN

Benny Green – Solo Piano

Benny Green is one of the most exciting, hard-swinging pianists to emerge from the legacy of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Born in New York and raised in Berkeley, California, Green began classical piano studies at age seven, drawn to jazz through his father’s record collection of Monk and Bird, and his early talent led to a weekly trio gig at Yoshi’s while still in high school.

After moving to New York, Green studied with veteran pianist Walter Bishop Jr., who encouraged him to explore the full scope of jazz piano history to find his own voice. He went on to work with Betty Carter from 1983 to 1987, then realized a lifelong dream by joining Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, remaining a member until Blakey’s passing in 1990. He went on to join Freddie Hubbard’s quintet, and in 1993 became the first recipient of the City of Toronto’s Glenn Gould International Protégé Prize in Music, selected personally by Oscar Peterson. That same year he joined Ray Brown’s trio, remaining until 1997.

Green has been hailed as the bearer of a torch handed down to him personally by his mentors, Betty Carter, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, and Ray Brown, a living link to one of the great lineages of jazz piano. With a recording career spanning over one hundred sessions as both leader and sideman, and decades of touring as a soloist and bandleader, Green brings the full weight of that tradition to The Side Door for two nights of solo piano, an intimate format that allows his extraordinary touch, harmonic depth, and hard-swinging spirit to take center stage.

DOMINIQUE FILS-AIMÉ

Dominique Fils-Aimé has established herself as one of today’s leading voices in vocal jazz. Also, the Montreal singer-songwriter has won two Juno Awards. Her latest album, Our Roots Run Deep (2023), earned the 2024 JUNO Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. Additionally, it received the 2024 Félix Award for Best Jazz Album at ADISQ. There, this affirms the importance of her artistic vision at the crossroads of jazz, soul, and blues.

In February 2026, she unveiled the second chapter of her sophomore trilogy with new album My World Is The Sun. With this project, Fils-Aimé continues her exploration of sonic, creative, and spiritual freedom.

On stage, she offers an immersive performance that invites audiences to delve into the roots of their soul. Moreover, she is guided by a profound quest for connection. She released her first live album Live at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2025. Here, it stands as a testament to the strength of her stage presence and her ability to forge an intimate bond with her audience.

In recent years, she has performed on many prestigious stages. For example, Blue Note New York, Blue Note Los Angeles, Monterey Jazz Festival and North Sea Jazz Festival. Additionally, she has opened for Melody Gardot, Diana Krall, and Jamie Cullum in many European theaters.

TYREEK MCDOLE

Tyreek McDole is a multi-award-winning Haitian-American vocalist from Central Florida whose soulful baritone and deeply reflective artistry are making waves across the New York and international music scenes. Rooted in the belief that music is one of the highest forms of communication, McDole approaches performance as a space for healing, reflection, and collective dreaming — treating each concert as both offering and ritual.

He first gained national recognition at the 2018 Essentially Ellington Competition at Jazz at Lincoln Center, where he received the Outstanding Vocalist Award presented by Wynton Marsalis. In 2023, he won first place at the prestigious Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, becoming only the second male winner in the competition’s history and joining the ranks of standout vocalists such as Samara Joy.

AYA SEKINE TRIO

Japanese Jazz Pianist Aya Sekine, with over three decades of cross-continental experience, has solidified her position as one of Asia’s most illustrious Jazz figures. Recently, Sekine has relocated to Detroit, Michigan after being approved for an artist permanent residency (EB-1) in the United States based on her Extraordinary Ability.

SUNNY WILKINSON

Sunny Wilkinson has taken her place in that elite group of jazz vocalists who have stretched the boundaries and found themselves “one of a kind.”

Sunny has sung with music icons such as The Count Basie Orchestra, Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, Clark Terry, Mark Murphy, Milt Hinton, Curtis Fuller and many more.  She has recorded four CDs as leader and numerous guest appearances. “Into the Light,” her newest CD, is all about family—not just Wilkinson’s immediate family, but her extended musical family as well. Featuring her Michigan band, Ron Newman on piano, Ed Fedewa on Bass, and Larry Ochiltree on Drums, it comprises a stylistic mix of tunes that resonate with Wilkinson because of the stories they tell. The CD features her crystalline voice and impressive ability to convey the heart of a lyric with unadorned honesty.

Sunny has also made significant contributions in jazz education.  She was the head of the vocal jazz program at Michigan State University for eighteen years.  Presently she is adjunct faculty at Western Michigan University and an artist in residence at the University of Michigan. She developed a mentoring program for young women jazz musicians called “Sisters in Jazz” that was taken to an international level through IAJE.  Sunny is very proud of her former students, many of whom are now the heads of vocal jazz programs at universities around the country and have successful careers as jazz performers and recording artists.

CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE BIG BAND

Over the past three decades, 11-time Grammy Award winner Christian McBride has fronted ensembles that span and synthesize straight-ahead and experimental jazz, funk, soul, Latin, hip-hop and rhythm and blues. His celebrated groups include Inside Straight, Christian McBride Big Band, Ursa Major, Christian McBride’s New Jawn, The Christian McBride Trio and A Christian McBride Situation.

Several of those paths converged on Without Further Ado, Vol. 1, the Christian McBride Big Band’s 2025 album, which won the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble. For the first time, the 17-piece band shared the spotlight with a host of guest vocalists, including Sting, Samara Joy, Dianne Reeves, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Jeffrey Osborne and Antoinette Henry. The album includes covers of songs by The Police, Cole Porter, Carole King and others.

The bass-playing McBride and his band are likely to perform music from that recording and the group’s previous three albums, which feature jazz standards and McBride originals, at this larger-than-life concert.

MONTY ALEXANDER

Nearly sixty years after he moved to the United States from Kingston, Jamaica, his hometown, GRAMMY® nominated pianist Monty Alexander is an American classic, touring the world relentlessly with various projects, delighting a global audience drawn to his vibrant personality and soulful message. A perennial favorite at Jazz festivals and venues worldwide and at the Montreux Jazz Festival where he has appeared 23 times since 1976, his spirited conception is one informed by the timeless verities: endless melody-making, effervescent grooves, sophisticated voicings, a romantic spirit, and a consistent predisposition.

In the course of any given performance, Alexander applies those aesthetics to a repertoire spanning a broad range of jazz and Jamaican musical expressions—the American songbook and the blues, gospel and bebop, calypso and reggae. VANESSA RUBIN & HER TRIO

Revered as both a torchbearer and a storyteller, jazz vocalist Vanessa Rubin possesses a voice hailed for crystalline clarity, hearth-like warmth and playful lioness sass. The Cleveland native brings a wealth of diverse influences to her vocal performance from both the Trinidadian/Caribbean roots of her mother and traditional jazz by way of her Louisiana-born father. Additional homespun influences include the melodic bell tone clarity of a young Capital Records recording artist, Nancy Wilson, the fire of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, the sweet sounds of trumpeter Blue Mitchell as well as her love of the Motown Sound…especially girl groups like the Supremes.

Rubin takes the stage of the Jellife Theatre for a Benefit Concert with  proceeds from the evening will support Karamu’s artistic productions, arts education programs, workforce development initiatives, community engagement efforts, and the preservation of Black theatre and storytelling. Opening reception begins at 5:30pm, concert @ 7:00pm.

WYNTON MARSALIS

Trumpeter, composer, and 2011 NEA Jazz Master Wynton Marsalis brings the most recent iteration of his iconic Septet to the Miner stage for four performances over two days.

The most famous jazz musician alive, Marsalis is a towering figure in the evolution of the art form. From his New Orleans beginnings and fiery debut with legendary drummer Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers to his string of acclaimed albums and role as Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Marsalis has amassed a staggering list of accomplishments including nine GRAMMYs and the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his long-form work Blood on the Fields — the first ever awarded to a jazz artist. He received the SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award at SFJAZZ Gala 2022 and made news in 2026 by announcing his departure from his leadership position at Lincoln Center after nearly 40 years.

Marsalis returns following his sublime performance of his score accompanying a screening of the 2010 silent Louis Armstrong biopic Louis during the 2025-26 Season with his vaunted Septet — a format that has remained his most enduring creative outlet and yielded a procession of masterful albums including 1992’s Blue Interlude, 1993’s Citi Movement, 1999’s Mr. Jelly Lord, and 2007’s Here…Now, among others.

NAT REEVES SEXTET

Nat Reeves brings his sextet to The Side Door, the same all-star group from his new album Now in Time. For over 40 years, Nat Reeves has been one of the most respected bassists in jazz. Early in his career he performed with Jackie McLean, Benny Golson, Donald Byrd, Art Taylor, Mulgrew Miller, Kenny Kirkland, and Kenny Drew. He became a longtime member of Kenny Garrett’s group beginning in 1994, and has worked and recorded with Pharoah Sanders, George Coleman, Harold Mabern, George Cables, and Joe Farnsworth, among many others. He has released three albums as a leader, State of Emergency, Blue Ridge, and now Now in Time, released April 17, 2026 on Cellar Live.

Now in Time brings together an extraordinary lineup spanning multiple generations of jazz, twelve tracks running just over an hour that move comfortably between Reeves’ own original compositions and a thoughtful selection of standards, including “On Green Dolphin Street,” “Alice in Wonderland,” and a tribute to Marvin Gaye with “The Creator Has a Master Plan.” Throughout the record, Reeves’ bass acts as a quiet narrator, steering the music’s direction with the kind of unhurried confidence that comes from four decades on the bandstand. Critics have praised the album as a recording that rewards close, attentive listening, one that resists the pace of casual consumption and instead invites listeners to settle into a long evening built on the trust and shared musical language of these six players.

BENITO GONZALEZ TRIO

Two-time Grammy nominee Benito Gonzalez is joined by legends Buster Williams and Lenny White.

Born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, Benito Gonzalez grew up immersed in traditional Venezuelan folk music before discovering jazz through the playing of Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett, an early inspiration that shaped his powerful, Afro-Latin-infused approach to the piano. Gonzalez made his way to the United States by a serendipitous route, an American cultural ambassador caught one of his trio gigs and later invited him to Washington, D.C.

He went on to play with Jackie McLean in 2003, then spent nearly seven years touring with Kenny Garrett’s quartet, earning two Grammy nominations for the recordings Seeds from the Underground and Pushing the World Away. In 2019 he joined NEA Jazz Master and Coltrane protégé Pharoah Sanders as pianist and musical director. A 2005 winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition and a Steinway artist since 2020, Gonzalez has shared the stage with Dave Liebman, Roy Hargrove, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, Al Foster, and many others.

Bassist Buster Williams has anchored some of the most important recordings and bands of the past six decades, from Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis to McCoy Tyner and Ron Carter, and remains one of the most revered bassists in the music. HENDRIK MEURKENS

One of the most unique and captivating voices in jazz brings his quartet to The Side Door. Hendrik Meurkens is a virtuoso on both the chromatic harmonica and the vibraphone and is widely regarded as the most important jazz harmonica player since Toots Thielemans. Born in Hamburg and now based in New York, his path to musical mastery is one of jazz’s most extraordinary stories. As a teenager, a Benny Goodman record with Lionel Hampton lit the fuse — he had to play vibraphone. Then, at nineteen, he heard Toots Thielemans for the first time and knew he had to play harmonica too. He perfected his unique musical voice at Berklee as a vibraphone major, then moved to Rio de Janeiro in the early 1980s to immerse himself completely in the music and culture of Brazil.

His poignant, emotionally affecting harmonica proved to be a sound that Brazilians strongly embraced, and that deep love of Brazilian music , samba, bossa nova, choro, has never left him, infusing everything he plays with a warmth and rhythmic vitality that is entirely his own. Back in Germany by 1983, he became a respected studio musician, recording with European Radio Orchestras and accompanying visiting legends like Harry “Sweets” Edison and Buddy Tate. He then moved to New York on an exclusive contract with Concord Records and has since released over fifteen acclaimed albums as a leader, performing at festivals and clubs around the world.

VANESSA RUBIN

Revered as both a torchbearer and a storyteller, jazz vocalist Vanessa Rubin possesses a voice hailed for crystalline clarity, hearth-like warmth and playful lioness sass. The Cleveland native brings a wealth of diverse influences to her vocal performance from both the Trinidadian/Caribbean roots of her mother and traditional jazz by way of her Louisiana-born father. Additional homespun influences include the melodic bell tone clarity of a young Capital Records recording artist, Nancy Wilson, the fire of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, the sweet sounds of trumpeter Blue Mitchell as well as her love of the Motown Sound…especially girl groups like the Supremes.

QUATRE

Bassist Joel Powell, drummer Chris Burroughs, pianist Tyrone Jackson and trumpeter Joe Gransden take to the stage on a Sunday evening of jazz at the Red Light Cafe.

These four musicians have been individually holding down the jazz scene in Atlanta and the metropolitan area for more than thirty years. They have played off and on with one or more in different configurations and come together as a quartet for a one night only performance.
