The Jazz Voyager

The Jazz Voyager is in the Big Easy to settle into some jazz and Creole cooking at Snug Harbor, located just outside the French Quarter in the Faubourg Marigny section of New Orleans, Louisiana at 626 Frenchmen Street, 70116. Hosting noted local and national jazz musicians and vocalists, the jazz bistro remains a premier venue within the regional jazz scene.

The club was started by Glenn Menish in 1983 and later sold to George Brumat, who owned the club until 2007, when he died of an apparent heart attack at the age of 63. While the club was not flooded, Hurricane Katrina forced a temporary closure, but reopened October 14, 2005.

Tomorrow night, the jazz bistro will propel my senses as I enjoy the talents of patriarch pianist Ellis Marsalis along with his quintet while feasting on fried calamari and mushrooms, salad, grilled salmon, rice marigny and steamed vegetables. The music cover is $40.00 plus dinner. Shows are 8:00 pm & 10:00 pm and reservations may be made at 504.949.0696.

The Jazz Voyager

Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club is the destination of this Jazz Voyager as I head across the pond to London, England. Opening October 30, 1959 in a basement at 39 Gerrard Street in the Soho district, it was set up and managed by musicians Ronnie Scott and Pete King. It then moved to its current and larger venue in 1965 at 47 Frith Street, W1D 4HT, UK.

This venerable bastion of  jazz history will host jazz vocalist Rene Marie two days from now and the Jazz Voyager will be in the audience to enjoy another wonderful evening of her vocal charms. For those initiates be amongst the veterans who travel many miles or walk around the corner to return again and again. Make your reservations at 44 20 7439 0747.

The Jazz Voyager

The Jazz Voyager is flying south to Miami to check out an intimate bistro called Rouge for Nights@Ricks Dinner Musical on Wednesday evening. Reminiscent of Casablanca and the jazz age of World War II, I am intrigued to be taken back to that period and listen to classic jazz and enjoying what I hope to be sumptuous dining experience of French and Moroccan cuisine.

All of this is wrapped up in what has been described as a romantic setting and each Wednesday features the talents of pianist David Attelan and vocalist Lavie at 908 71st Street, Miami Beach, FL 33141. Table reservations are required and one can be made at 305-720-9125. #jazzvoyager #wannabewhereyouare

The Jazz Voyager

The Jazz Voyager is heading out to Minnesota to check in at the Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant located at 1010 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis, 55403. Though the venue hosts sets from a plethora of major acts including Dave Brubeck and Ramsey Lewis as well as popular musicians like his Prince Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, the establishment works tirelessly to preserve jazz music.

I am looking forward to an intimate cabaret setting and enjoying the sold out performance of the Martin Sexton Trio at 10:00pm as the 7pm performance is sold out. But this Jazz Voyager always takes delight in noshing at late night performances with like patrons who haunt the dark corners of jazz. Reservations, however, are highly recommended for you initiates and can be made at 612-332-1010.

The Jazz Voyager

This week the Jazz Voyager is in Madison, New Jersey and tonight will be sitting in a jazz spot established in 1995 by Martha Chang and David Nui called Shanghai Jazz. Inspired by Shanghai of the 1920s and 1930s, they are reputed to host acclaimed jazz musician performances six days a week with no cover except for special events. Located at 24 Main Street, 07940 if you need to map quest it but this jazz voyager is going to Uber my way over there.

Looking forward to sampling the Asian cuisine that is inspired by the seasons while enjoying Elias Bailey and Avalon Jazz Band in one of the top 100 jazz clubs in the world. Take precaution on Friday and Saturday by calling 973-822-2899 for a required reservation if you want seating at the 6:30 or 8:35 performance. #jazzvoyager #wannabewhereyouare
