The Jazz Voyager

We’re off to the South China Seas to visit one of Singapore’s well kept secret. On this trip to Asia the Jazz Voyager is going to uncover the secret of the Singjazz Club located at 101 Jln Sultan 199002. Though nestled right in the heart of Kampong Glam, part of the secret is that you may have to follow the music to find the entrance. However, it resides in the Heritage Hotel and was formerly known as the Sultan Club.

The decor is ruby, the tables are small rounds, the atmosphere cozy and the music is a blend of crooners, pop jazz and a cross-pollination of genres. Interesting combination to be investigated. I am told to stay away from whiskey sours and Manhattans as they can be pricey. Food is downstairs so eat up before you come up. Open Thursday through Sunday from 9:00pm to 1:00am with Sunday being open for a jam session. For more information the number is +65 8481 3034.

This cavernous vaulted ceiling jazz joint & bar is yet a cozy, brick-walled space showcasing local and touring artists.

The Eric Willoth Trio will be performing the 9:30pm concert and then lead the late night jam session. Listen up though, the jam doesn’t start until 11:30pm and goes to 4:00 in the morning. Word to the wise, the concert and jam may sell out so reservations are a must. Call +33 1 48 87 56 30.

The Jazz Voyager

Once again the Jazz Voyager is enroute across the Atlantic to Sweden for a little bit of jazz at Fasching. The jazz club and concert venue is located in the central part of the city at Kungsgatan 63, 111 22 Stockholm, Sweden.

Opening in 1977 and taking its name from the party that precedes Lent and Easter, it has grown to become Scandinavia’s largest organizer of jazz. With concerts numbering around 250 annually, they present both emerging and international musicians amidst full bar and restaurant.

This coming Saturday outing brings the Mike Stern/Dave Weckl Band to the stage for the nightly performance and this voyager is set for dinner and a show. Until then I will be scouring Stockholm for other jazz haunts, record shops and unknown attractions.

For information on tickets and online purchase, age requirements and other information the number to call is +46 8 20 00 66.
