The Jazz Voyager
While the Jazz Voyager is tripping around across the pond he’s off to Denmark’s capital city of Copenhagen to the Jazzhus Montmartre at Store Regnegade 19A, DK-1110 Copenhagen K. A non-profit venue supported by the government, this jazz haven is located in a handsome yellow-painted building with large windows in the city centre. Attracting nordic greats and international names alike, the club is out of bounds for avant garde and funk/rock.

The Jazz Voyager
Next Stop: Berlin. The Jazz Voyager is going to have a listen to jazz at a small intimate 50 seat club at Donaustrasse 115 called Donau115 in the lively Neukölln district. Presenting top-quality straight-ahead and post-bop jazz on the ground floor of a building that was bombed in World War II, the floors above were torn down and rebuilt but the room Donau is original.
Admission is free but €5 donations encouraged for live music every Friday and Saturday, and most Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Beer is offered for €2.50 and the latest craze in drinks, Moscow Mules are €5. The club serves up often wildly original music is the operative word here and is said to be wunderbar. The Jazz Voyager
The Jazz Voyager is opting to remain in Europe and jumping over to Rynek Główny 28, 31-000 Kraków, Poland to the Harris Piano Jazz Bar. This Thursday night I will be privileged to listen to the Groborz Trio – Inside Jazz starting at 9:30pm.
With jazz symbolizing freedom and resistance amid Stalin’s repressive regime after the war, many top US jazz acts often played venues like this. Harris is an intimate nightclub with about 70 seat capacity in nearly 1,000-year-old brick cellars with bars in adjacent rooms. The bar’s garden is on the hugely atmospheric Market Square and lays down a musical menu of mainstream jazz, funk and blues with an often boisterous vibe.

The Jazz Voyager
The Jazz Voyager is jet setting across the globe to Europe’s westernmost capital city of Portugal where is situated one of Europe’s oldest jazz nightspots: Hot Clube. Founded in 1948, it has hosted legends in its 140 seat capacity. Though it suffered a fire in 2009, it reopened three years later two doors away with a new interior style that is minimalist and modern and the only heat being generated now is by the soloists up on its stage.
Just a short walk from the Bairro Alto, central Lisbon, the club is located at 48 Praca da Alegria, attracting a mixed crowd of young musicians, students, and tourists. This weekend I will be catching João Barradas on accordion recording his new album Own Thoughts From Abroad with Simon Moullier on vibraphone, Luca Alemanno playing double bass, Naima Acuña on batteria.

The Jazz Voyager
It’s September and time for this Jazz Voyager to hit the overseas skies once again and head to Auckland, New Zealand to visit Downbeat located at 326 Hibiscus Coast Highway, Orewa to hear a Creative Jazz Club member Allana Goldsmith perform from 7:30pm – 10:00pm. The cover is free but table bookings are highly recommended.
While in Auckland I will be investigating the acquisition of a coveted 1885 Basement Membership into the Creative Jazz Club, where like-minded people meet to hold their weekly meetings in this Britomart bar where some of New Zealand’s best jazz artists play jazz in the intimate setting of sofas scattered around the room. #wannabewhereyouare
